8544, Turbo Manifold dilema> Please help. Posted by RxR_Eclipse, Sep-19-01 04:42 PM
Alright guys, here goes I've had a turbo sittin in my storage for about 2 months now, my only problem to date is the turbo manifold. What do you think of this. I was going to get a new header, take it to a shop, and have them chop it to fit the turbo. What do you think? The cheapest I could find a manifold for is 450 custom made for my turbo, but it entrails me sending the turbo to a guy I don't know, paying all the shipping, waiting for him to make it, then paying him 450 + shipping to send the turbo and manifold back. Ok this leaves me with about a 500-550 $ bill. This is not cost effective to me. I guess what I am wondering is if the piping on the header will hold up to the heat of a turbo. The turbo I have is water and oil cooled, so I am sure that it will not heat up as much as just an oil lubricated one. Need suggestions. Thanks in advance.

> water and oil cooled
All HRC ones can be water and oil cooled. The Water holes are plugged, if you feel bothered eough, you can remove the pulgs and make them water cooled....
As for a header used as a turbo manifold, I don't see why it wouldn't work.. Some of the cheesy manifolds out there might as well be headers. You might a *slightly* longer lag, but honestly at full throttle action, I bet it'll be just the same as any well-designed turbo kit. In fact good headers are designed to flow better and if you put the turbo at the 4-1 collector , it should be fine.

I say nope, not at all, bad idea.
First, you would have to cut the headers where they all collect together to add a flange. This wold probably put the turbo down low and at a funny angle that would not fit properly anyway. Then you have to sort out the rest of the piping from whatever angle the turbo sits. Even if this worked, I would put money down it cracks ina month from the added stress of supporting the turbo and the extra heat generated.
It is much better to have a proper cast iron manifold and if you want to do it do it right the first time or you will be paying twice anyway.

I third that.
All you have to do to bend a mild steel header is add heat to it. The same will happen when you try hanging a turbo off it. Just the wrong material for a turbo manifold. Stainless steel (greddy) would be better but thats probably still too thin and good luck working with SS.

Howabout the stock exhaust manifold????
That always looked *very* turbo ready to me....And it qualifies for your "cast iron" specs...
If I ever bought another 420A and wanted to have fun, that would definitely be the way for me... (unless I went all motor)

Yea, If I had the stock manifold, I would proboly engineer a way to use it, but since I 86ed that thing a while ago, I am stuck trying to get a turbo manifold. I called HRC and they won't make me one. There is an aircraft engineering place near here so I'm gonna see if they can make a manifold for me! thanks guys

In my car, I've got a tubular "header" styled manifold and like Murix, and the others said, IT SUCKS! Now don't get me wrong, everybody I show loves the design and it does look really awesome but it's like I have to get tiny cracks filled in every few months, I've been turboed now for about 6 months and I've had it "buzzed" twice to seal the leaks. As for stans comment about the manifold not being able to support the turbo, On my manifold I've got a support piece of steel to give the manny some slack from the turbo, BUT, you got to understand that when you really get on it, that motor begins to move and there's a chance of getting stress cracks that way. Another part of the problem is because it gets so hot in those runners that it thins out the steel and eventually tiny lines will appear and you will hear the infamous exhaust leak. Anyhow, I just got a star manifold for my car, and somebody from my area is looking at buying my manifold but if that falls through I will be seeing if anybody else on the board is pursuing the task of making their own CUSTOM turbo kit and selling it. Of course I will have that manifold rewelded and painted again, BUT, I give the advice to whomever is interested to seriously think about sending it off to get SHOTPEENED or CERAMIC COATED (some options given to me by the guys who will fixed my manifold the previous times) let me kow if you guys want some pics.

What turbo is that you're using?? *ahem* <i'm ashamed to say> because from what I understand the turbo you are using is WATER and OIL cooled, Well the stock t-25 is just that and ummmmmmmmmm..........that's what I'm using too. ARGH!! let the flaming begin.......
As for using the stock manifold. ALmost impossible, thought about doing it, talked to a few turbo gurus about it, who also had the same idea (does THUNDER RS ring a bell?) From what I understand the stock turbo WILL bolt up, but you cant' have the AC and ??? <~~i forgot what it was (as soon as I heard no AC, i said FUG IT) Also it will be almost impossible for the downpipe to be made down there. I thought about cutting the stock manifodl and making the collector a little bit higher to give it some clearance BUT, I hear that cutting and rewelding with cast iron is a big no no, and will not stand the test of time (whew) I'm done, turn me over!!

Just order one from R.P.M. down here in San Diego... tell them it's for the 420A (they have the template) and tell them what kind of turbo you're using.. (they have t3 flanges as well as tdo4' and 5's). I wouldn't go to anybody else for custom fabrication. These guys are the ones that built Adam Suwaratari's NSX. Oh.. the manifold is only 300.00 from them. I don't have the number right off hand.. but just call information and tell them the city is chula vista and the shop is called RPM or Rells Performance Motorsports.

Thanks man, I just looked at a 97GST, I haven't made up my mind weather to get it or not but if I don't Im definitally going to call them! That is a great price on a manifold!

wheatking from asog has a mitsu 14b bolted to the stock 420A manifold. He had to remove the A/C compressor and welded his own downpipe, but it works..he got upwards of 9psi on that thing..he said that it hauls!!!! until he cracked a piston hehe =)
if you need a manifold made custom for you, there is an asog member who makes them..he's from canada. He can get it as cheap as 225$. His name is Alain and his email is bourasal35@videotron.ca

Other than having to have another down pipe made and having the AC in the way (which I don't have) are there anyother issues with using the stock manifold?
