85184, Power Steering belt Posted by DJ420a, Apr-24-05 04:12 PM
Are any of you loosing your ps belt when your in high rpms while boosting? This has now happened to me twice. It happened tonite, I was behind a Conquest and he tried to loose me. I hit about 55k at 10 psi in 2nd gear, next thing I know Im turning into KFC almost takin out the parking curb. Any suggestions what I can do or should I just say fuck having power steering? Wouldnt that hurt the R&P?

i am curious as to why boost would cause your PS belt to mess up since the engine isnt spinning any differently it is just having more air pumped into it
i mean 5500rpms is 5500 rpms regardless if you are at 10psi or in vacuum
could just be the tensioner giving out under high rpm
curious problem and i am interested to see what might be wrong

Im in the same boat as you. I dont understand why it happens when I boost? I guess I will just get another belt and see what happens.

i am on my 13th belt and counting i buy 3 at a time. the alt goes to but it will flip over and not come off or just snap. it is when i speed shift or slam a gear. if you get a soild front motormount or inserts i bet it stop. the motor moves alot in higher rpms and cause it to pull close to the front of the car there for making it loose, when you shift the motor slams back and pop.

Are you running a stock pulley or UDP? I'd be willing to bet a lot of money your pulley is not on all the way and soon as it starts spinning hard it throws the belt. Give her a whack or two with a heavy ball-pin hammer.

A while back there was a discussion about the bearing on the tensioner being junk. Another possiblity.....
Brian
PS you replace it with one from mcmaster-carr.

I've just gotten used to driving with no power steering. I was too lazy to put the assembly back together and deal with getting it tensioned so I said screw it. You get used to it after awhile.

that could be the reason why i have never thrown one then
UDP and solid motor mounts
either that or dumb luck

Well I have a UDP and the solid urethane motor mounts. Are those considered "solid"?

85221, RE: Power Steering belt Posted by baxsom, Apr-25-05 12:35 PM
yep
well that blows the UDP and solid theory out of the water
guess that only leaves dumb luck

I had the same problem for a while and it ended up being the belt was just a little tiny bit too long.. I also have a UDP (no name ebay) and urethane mounts. After we put the shorter belt on it went away but I haven't driven the car for a while (going on ten months now!)

Maybe I just have it too tight or too loose. Its not snapping or anything, just flying off. The first time it happened, I was being stupid smoking the tires and when I was driving away I seen my belt rolling down the street in the opposite direction, lol.

well when you tension the belt how much deflection are you leaving? and about where is the lil square on the bolt of the tensioner. Maybe you should move to a smaller belt, the bearing in my PS went out and im about to take off the belt until i can get a new PS pump.

Well then that belt must have been ruined, b/c the P/S belt is to the inside of the drive belt and that won't come off unless it snaps.

Well that makes me feel a little better, thinking it was just the belt.

I"ve boosted at 15 psi WOT up to bouncing off of the rev limiter, and have never thrown any belt at all..Something in the belt path is not lined up properly. It doesnt take much misalignment for it to throw a belt at high rpm.

Well I put another one on today, a 38 incher. Lets see what happens, lol.

You can get a shorter belt and take off the tensioner if you have a udp... this solved the prob. for me.

this happened to me twice while i was still n/a. everytime i'ld downshift and hit high rpms the belt would fly off. it ended up being a bad bearing in the assembly. it hasnt done it again since replacement a year ago.

in respone to techboy, please dont hit the pulley with a hammer :nono, think about it, when you are hitting the pulley you are essentialy hittin the end of your crank, which could easily fuck up something like your thrust berring, badddd idea! Its rarely a good idea to beat on shit imo.

beatin on shit always works for me :shrug besides thats how you get the pulley on there in the first place, it doesn't just slide on, well mine didn't at least

Well I did use a hammer and gave the UDP a few love taps to get it on, lol.
