Right now i am piecing together a turbo kit and am now trying to figure out what type of intercooler to get. My choices are either a starion front mount or a spearco supra front mount(don't know if thats what it really is since it was on the car when the owner bought it). This is what the owner has told me about it the spearco has the end tanks on both sides they are 2 inch, and its the exact width and length of 2 lisenceplates next to eachother and about 2.5 inch thick. I can get either one for around $100, so which one should i go with? Right now I'm leaning towards the Spearco if thats what it is?
here is the pic of the spearco

It looks kinda beat up...but if it's in decent shape definetly go with the spearco

agreed, get the spearco. I have a starion and will be hurting in a month or so when I go to higher boost level :(.

I would try and stay away from the Starion FMIC. If you are on a budget, search ebay for a Evo or SRT4 IC. I'm sure they are much more efficeient than a Starion and about $200 too.

That looks more like a johnyracecar intercooler. But - check out those ICs too.

Yeah, you might want to check Ebay for the SRT4/Evo IC. This might be against what some guys tell you on here, but I'd look for a smaller more efficent IC. The larger ones block alot of air coming in the radiator and can create heat problems in the engine bay. A smaller *effiecent* IC would eliminate that problem a bit and you'd still be able to support substainal boost.

If you not running up in the 300hp range I think a HRC side mount would be your best bet! Like ^^^ said above anything you put in front of your radiator will only restrict the air getting to the radiator where as a SMIC will not. I know people running the HRC SMIC and putting 340whp down and not having any issues. But out of the 2 you listed I would have to say Spearco.

off topic how much boost can the star intercooler hold

Intercoolers don't hold boost. :thumbsup

if you go with a different intercooler other than hahns, how do you go about getting pipes that go with it? do you all make custom pipes or do the hahn ones work with it?

i guess it depends what intercooler you get, but most likely you will have to make custom pipes

Most intercoolers are pressure tested to like 80psi so don't worry about that just make sure it doesn't have any cracks or leaks.

He is asking waht the Starion's max efficiency is.....not how much it can physically take until it explodes or leaks...lol
The Starion begins heat soaking fast and losing efficiency around 11 or 12psi on a standard S16G Hahn setup.

18psi on a 16G is not quite 340whp (im only assuming you have the S16g since you didn't state otherwise) If your running anything more substantial than the 16g then i retract my previous comment. 18psi would be more in the 290whp range or LESS. If i was you i'd look into the Evo stock FMIC. It's not the largest core, most efficient, or the best flow, but for what levels your gonna see it's just fine. If your really up for building a beast keep a look out on DSMtrader for Hahn FMIC cores. I found a 2g specific for 650 + piping. Or you can go to Hahn and get a non specific 3.5" core for 500 or so.
