84352, Star turbokit upgrade?
Posted by jimmy169, Mar-28-05 10:44 AM
Those with the star turbokit, how did u guys go about upgrading your turbo and etc? I'm curious for future reference if I ever do want to get a bigger turbo or better manifold and whatnot. The only upgrade I could think of was the portfueler from Hahn which is working great. I am ganna dyno it untuned for 15psi and let u guys know how it went. Eventually I hope to dyno tune to 20psi, so far it's handling boost like a champ and my EGT's aren't going above 12.

But I am just curious what I could do if I ever wanted a bigger turbo, would hahn's 20g fit the star manifold easy?

well first of all if you are only hitting 12's on the egt's.. you are pig rich and you need to tune ASAP.. Second you are prolly never going to need to upgrade that turbo. A 20g is a comparable turbo to what you got in your kit. That is why people upgrade the Hahn kits. You will not need to upgrade until you are in the 5-600 HP range. That's why a lot of people get star to start is that it will support an obsene amount of power without upgrading.

Ah I see I had no idea. I am about to put my exhuast on (new 3" catback with a 3" testpipe) and wanted to do a baseline pull like i said for 15psi. I am only at 12psi now but it will go up to 13-13.5 at times. If I tune I would wanna tune to 20psi but first I want to get my front center differential pin welded in the tranny and put in the phantom grip (lsd) that I ordered.

Alright I wanna go for it, do a full tune hoping for it to handle 20psi safely, but my only other concern (since I am going to take care of the transmission) is with stock axles on street tires, can i fuck em up? Or is that just with drag radials, cause with summer coming up I may gain some traction with the ground being heated, I'm just worried my axles will snap on me if I go full boost.

yea, it's pretty possible, especially at 20psi, but ya know, don't fix it if it's not broken, just be prepared to buy new axles, even without your tires sticking, you can still get wheel hop, and that can snap your axles as easily, so just be carefull until you can afford to get new axles

Alright yeah I will just be careful and if anything lower the boost.

Thanx a lot for the info, it's real good to know my turbo is as good as a 20g, i had no idea I thought a 20g was a bit better atleast (or bigger I guess).

it's not how big it is that matters, it's how you use it!

If I dyno tune for 20psi before I do the transmission, will my transmission hold out...I'm thinking it'd be a better idea to do the tranny first but if it is dangerous to be running so rich I'd like to get tuning out of the way, it will be much cheaper than doing the tranny...

Your tranny will hold boost fine. It is not the weak link. As for the diff pin, just get the bracketts if you are worried about it. But it's not going to be 20psi that causes the pin to fall out. I believe this just happens from time and vibrations. I have never researched this much as i have the quaife, so I could be totally wrong, but I doubt it's power level alone that will cause this issue..

Yeah, I have to stop peeling out...too much wheelhop...

I would just like to put power to both wheels instead of mostly one so am still contemplating whether or not to dyno tune first. One way or the other, tuned or untuned I'd like to dyno the car this week soon as the new exhuast and testpipe gets put on. (a baseline dyno right now is being done for only 35 bux, 3 pulls, it's a steel, a full tune would cost me 150 though, and 75 every hour after).

Well i have never been to a dyno, but I would assume that you won't wheel hop or have traction issues when strapped to a dyno. (the rollers roll free so there can't be any resistance) So unless I'm clueless I don't think you have to worry about blowing axles on the dyno. So get yourself tuned first and then worry about the axles. Remember your tranny is not the weak link here, so you don't have to do the diff pin first or worry about the lsd before you put power to it..

Oh no i wasn't worried about wheelhop at the dyno at all, lol, i was worried about it on the streets. I've heard our tranny is very strong but it's the front center differential pin that gives out. Plus i'm having real crazy torque steer as it is at just 12-13psi. I am on the schedual next week for a dyno run. I'm thinking of doing a full tune for as much psi as I can and then bring it down to 15psi till I get the tranny and axles done. Would a tune at 20psi cause it to run rich at 15psi (since it's meant to be tuned for 20psi) sorry for my ignorance as usual.

edit: n/m if I tune I'll leave it at 20psi, i'll let u guys know next week and will post up the dyno chart if I do.

Well if the shop tunes it right, then it should be tuned for the proper curve up to 20psi. So that means that anything under 20psi should be tuned properly too. So if you dyno tune for 20PSi and the curve is done properly then you should be fine at 15 psi, or 10psi or even 8psi. Does that make sence? So short answer is after the tune you should be able to run anything under 20psi and be just fine.

actually you DONT really know what kind of power your car is REALLY putting out till the Dyno Loads it. Its not just free spining on some.

As for your wheel hop get some motor mount inserts they help alot and they only cost 20 bucks.

The STAR kit uses a T3 flange on the manifold. This means, in short, that as far as the turbo goes, your upgrae options are vast and simple. T3-hotsided turbos range from tiny to massive. The STAR turbo is leaning more towards the tiny side of things, even considering its size.

Thanx Dino, but excuse my ignorance, lol, r u saying I am pretty much stuck with what I have or can upgrade to dif. T3 turbo's?
