84279, HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-26-05 06:58 PM
Hey everybody, I'm about to install my stage V HRC turbo kit, and i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations to help the process go along smoother. Did anyone find anything particularly hard or was it all straight forward? If something was hard, do you think you could let me know to ensure that i don't make any mistakes. Any information or detailed pictures of anyone elses installs would also be greatly appreciated. This is going to be my first ever boosted car, I can't wait to join the boosted brotherhood!!!

You mean to say that you're going from stock to Stage 5 in one giant leap? Not a smart move. Especially if you're posting questions like this one. That's big time. You realize you're not looking at plug and play, bolt on and go with that sort of system, right? With great power comes great responsibility. The slightest mistake at those levels and poof! It's all gone and you have a crater where your 420A once was.

Good luck to you. HRC kits are quality and you should be able to install it just fine. Well, I think that if you're running a Stage 5 turbosystem, you should be required to be able to at least install it yourself.

if this post is for real, the kit should be done in about a month and a half. the stage 3 kit comes with pistons and rods for a rebuild. Considering the cost of a stage 5 kit i doubt this post has any credibility.

how many people even have a stage V
i mean damn when i add up the reciepts that i have spent just getting my stage 2 running i could have bought that new ducati 999 i have always dreamed about.

buy hey if he wants to go from stock to stage V
i say go for it dude
and please keep us posted every step of the way because if you have the balls to do it then you i might need some help myself down the road
84287, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 04:19 AM
yea i can definately do it, i've got done a couple motor rebuilds before, i have a shop full of tools, and a master tech if i need him, so there shouldn't be a big problem, i was just wondering if something was especially easy to mess up.

and yes i got internals to whoever asked that, i'll post some pics of what i've got done so far
84288, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 04:50 AM
wow i just tried to make a post with all of my pictures but internet explorer just shut off, and it took forever, so I'm just going to give you the link to my webshots and you can look at it all there because i don't feel like posting that again. so here you go
http://community.webshots.com/user/cmas00 enjoy!

As i was reading through the directions and kind of putting stuff together on my floor just to see how it goes, I think I'm missing some parts for the turbo's oil feed inlet. Well i have the peices, i just think they're the wrong ones, because the 90 degree elbow provided doesnt match up to the oil feed fitting provided. Either the elbow is too small, or the fitting is too large on that end. Did anyone else encounter this? I checked through all of my other fitting bags and couldn't find something that fit right, so i'm pretty sure that i need to call hahn and get them to send another over.

And everyones suggestions or warning or whatever is greatly appreciated. I feel more than capable to do this project, but like you all said, this is a lot of money, and I'm not going to be cocky about it, so I'll take as much help and advice from people who have been through it as I can!

hahaha Tim your funny... i think you lose count of "stages" after all you've done.

*Back on topic.* Don't worry to much, I think it will be alot easier to start with forged internals. Just keep the boost really low for quite a while and tune very thoroughly. Get a Datalogger! Read this forum up and down and backwards and forwards. If you have any questions there is a wealth of information with the click of the mouse ( on the SEARCH function). If you still have questions im sure there are 100 people here that are willing to help.

I think it's great that you're jumping to stage 5 right off the bat. I'm stage 5 plus some and have been through a lot of setups on my engine. I wish I would have bought a stage 5 setup the first time. With all the extra money I've spent swapping turbo parts, I could have blown the engine and rebuilt it a couple times.

Anyways... everything in the stage 5 kit is pretty easy and stright forward to install. HRC is known for leaving small parts out of the kit or sending wrong parts sometimes. So double check what you received and let them know ASAP if anything isn't right.

Again, I have no tip for you other than take your time and do it right. Ask questions here even if it seems stupid. Oh yeah, ignore the jealous fuckers who don't think you should have bought a stage 5 kit. :P

Good luck and have fun!

haha thanks a bunch man, yea they also forgot to send my air filter lol, but i already called them about that. I'll give them a call monday about the fitting.

Posted by Uberingram, Mar-27-05 05:48 AM
They are still using that stupid downpipe in their stageV kits? WTF? I should hope that's the first thing you're not going to use in that kit. :wary
84294, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by dougie2, Mar-27-05 06:06 AM
Yeah that downpipe is a PITA and doesn't flow worth shit. If you can afford it, go ahead and purchase HRC's new 3" downpipe with v-clamp connection. I would also send the turbo manifold, turbine housing, and downpipe off to get ceramic coated to help control the heat and prevent rust.

Also, if you're going to run a lot of boost, I recommend replacing that blow-off valve. Did they send you a CM stage 4 clutch? Cool!

I'm curious, what was the cost of the kit?
84295, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 06:26 AM
yea, thats the first two things im planning to change actually, that BOV is junk, and the kit was $6,652.82 with shipping, thats including internals and the clutch and everything. But not the timing belt/water pump/head gasket and other gaskets.

But yea I don't plan on running more than 13psi until i can upgrade my ignition and get some beefier axles

The stock ignition is stong - you'll be fine using it up to about 20 PSI. When boosting higher than that, you'll want to retard the ignition timing just a tad. I recommend using a Crane HI6-DI2 with timing retard module.

You're going to run 93 octane all the time, right?
84299, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 06:39 AM
well yea definately, unless of course im at the track in which case i would use higher octane, but yea i'd never go lower than 93, in fact thats one of the first things stated in the install manual

the sales rep said if i wanted to boost over 15psi i would need an aftermarket ignition, so i'll probably just play it safe and run around there

was my kit supposed to come with an in-tank fuel pump, or an in-line fuel pump?
84300, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by baxsom, Mar-27-05 07:33 AM
wow

seems like a lot of stuff for 6k

maybe i should have went that route to start with also

would have saved a lot of headache with the craptech i think

are you upgrading your fuel lines too to a larger size or leaving the stock ones on

just curious

and yes
i am jealous

what are you doing for exhaust

hopefully something bigger than stock with that setup
if you want to stick with hahn i recommend
these parts from them
Part#HEX-4700 3" downpipe $375.00
Then mated to the FWD hi-flow cat converter. Part#HEX-6250 $225
Then mated to the HEX-1300 exhaust, we modify to fit the 3" cat . $599 for the exhaust and modification.

direct quotes on prices from brad in sales

84306, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 11:26 AM
yea brad's who i did all my ordering with

yea as long as i don't launch it too hard the axles shouldn't be a problem, plus i don't think i'll be able to get enough traction to actually snap them anyways lol

and yea that is what im going to do for exhaust once i get another $1300 lol

this summers project is aftermarket ignition, larger axles, lsd, stickier tires, turbo back exhaust, and definately a new BOV
84307, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by Aggression, Mar-27-05 11:33 AM
If he only plans on running 13psi for now his stock exhaust is fine. DSMRoadster still has his stock exhaust and he runs 15psi no problem. Yah a bigger exhaust like a 3" would be nice, but is not needed.
84308, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 11:40 AM
yea i should be alright, we'll see though, but seriously if anyone has some pics they used to document their install, let me know, visuals always help. Anyone have a pic of where exactly to install the oilpan drain fitting. I think i know where they're talking about but i just want to be sure. Alright i gotta get back to calculus, i'll be back later, unless someone wants to help me with that too =)
84309, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by grain, Mar-27-05 11:45 AM
ok. first step. rebuild the engine. and stick it in n/a. dont over complicate things. once its broken in, then install the turbo kit. but id install the fuel and all that when engine is out also. but take it slow. and you wont have a problem.

Yeah, it sealed up perfect. I did put some silicone on it to make sure. I also put some silicone on the treads to make sure the nut would not vibrate loose.

just make sure you have some spare money for when you break something. it happens.
84322, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Mar-27-05 04:37 PM
Look into other avenues for some of your future parts. you will find there are much cheaper ways of going. its too late now since you already baught the kit but for a Dp look into making one if you can weld or have a shop make one. Pick up a spare set of axles when you find some for cheap. spinning the tires can snap axles just as easy....called wheel hop. Go with john's (Grain) route it will make troubleshooting easier. High Flow cats can be bought for 100.00 from RRE, just weld the flanges to it and your good to go. Again this is for the future.

Regarding the portfucker......look into a EGR block off, the instuctions mention a way of goign about it. the EGR tube to the manifold will not fit once the spacer is in there. Some people have said it fits fine yet Hahn will tell you it wont unless 1" is added or the tube is blocked off.

84326, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by BlackMagic, Mar-27-05 05:34 PM
yea i'll look into it, if i do an EGR block-off kit, it'll throw a CEL though right?
84327, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Mar-27-05 05:35 PM
not if you block the return tube and keep the EGR and solinoid. You can remove all the equipment and do a resistor mod to eliminate a CEL. I dont know the resistance off hand but chris (SilverNT) has it.

Terry
84328, RE: HRC Stage V install

10watt 100ohm i do believe, ya i checked it is. Looks like a big french fry with to hard wires sticking out of it. Wrap each wire with electical tape or it will short itself out. Then stick each end in the plug for the EGR. Wrap it up and if a CEL comes on then Reset your ECU. Oh and if you leave the selenoid then it's supposed to through a CEL for insufficient flow. I completely blocked mine off and i've only had the CEL return 2 times and one was because the setup was moved. It's simple and easy and cost less than $5, just sometimes your idle is a little rough, oh well. Don't forget to plug up the Vacuum line coming from the manifold with something. I used it for a source for the boost gauge.

overpriced yes
i think so
i guess that we are paying for the convenience of the parts already supposed to work and fit together

not to mention that they just moved into that new facility
and got their new dyno they need to pay for
84335, RE: HRC Stage V install
Posted by Aggression, Mar-28-05 12:57 AM
Yes that is very over priced. I only need the pistons and rods and I will be a Stage V according to Hahns stage V kit. And I will only have paid $4,100 for everything.

$6,600 - $4,100 = $2,500

I know there are some that have done it cheaper too. But like ^^^ said above you pay for the convenience of having everything you need at once. If you afford it then that is great. I mean I think even if I could afford it all at once I would still peice it together and look for good low prices.

yes i do realize that, but i'm not getting rid of this car. This was my brothers car, and then he died, so it became my car, and i'm not about to get rid of the only thing i have from him. Besides, pay 6 grand for 300+ whp, or 6 grand for 200 crank hp? Anyways let's get off the money aspect of this alright? As the post title says, this is about the install, so don't worry about how much i've spent, i just want to hear from people who have been through it and see if they have any suggestions about the install, or any pictures they took to document their install. So off the money subject, back on the install subject, i'm sending the block out tomorrow or the day after to get bored .020 over and have the rotating assembly balanced, thats all the news i have right now, i'll keep you updated.

i wish my stage 5 came with a super 25g, actually i don't because i wouldn't even be able to rev my engine high enough (without breaking it) to get the full potential of the turbo
84351, RE: HRC Stage V install

I guess Justin rang for me. Yes I boost 15psi daily with a stock exhaust. It's sufficeint for now, though more flow wouldn't hurt. I will be going with a cut out instead of a full 3inch. When the weather gets warmer, I will be welding my own dp and mate a cut out to it. So when I want to tear some ass up, I'll just hit the switch and have the exhaust exit before the cat-con. Sorry to hear about your brother man.

You dont have a 25g? Thats seems strange to me.
A while ago I called Howell Automotive and even they said they could sell their Hahn kits with the choice of either 16g, 20g or 25g. I mean you've got the internals now so its not like you need a smaller turbo to be safer.

I wouldn't be able to use it to it's full potential, in fact it probably wouldn't even make boost until like 5000, and considering my top end is stock, it can't rev up high enough to the 8000rpm plus redline needed to use the super 25g sufficiently. I'm sure it's a great turbo, and maybe in the future i'll use it, but for now, the super 20g is the right fit for my purposes.

don't fix whats not broken*

i'll take my chances, if they break, oh well, i'll get some new ones, i've got another car anyways so it's really no inconvenience to me. I definately plan on swapping them out when i need to though

CALL HAHN AND BITCH ABOUT THE DOWNPIPE. For $6,000 they better include the right downpipe. That downpipe is no good for that power level. They should include the good one in the highest level of the kits.... sheesh :rolleyes The reason i say this is because that seems to be the biggest bitch I hear from people about the install. Just so you know it's not about the money. But they KNOW that DP is a piece of shit, and they should be including the better pipe for a freakin stage 5...

alright who's ready for some bench racing, get ready to rev your...computers lol

i've looked all around this site in the racing section and stuff to see what other people are running, but most of them just have a stage 2 or stage 3 kit with maybe some internals, i know HRC say's that they ran an 11.7 with the stage 5 kit, but i seriously doubt that i'll be even close to that. Does anyone think low 13s possibly high 12s are attainable and are in reach, (with a bunch of practice and some tuning of course, and some sticky tires)

sure its obtainable with a lot of practice.

youll need axles though.

you will also want an LSD, motor mounts, full bushing kit and a neon 3:55 tranny to obtain those low track numbers you want.

good luck on installing the kit :)

Install the parts, break the motor in, test and tune, then have at it. Quickly you will see that torque steer is a mother and manipulation of the gas pedal will be quite tricky at the track.

I will not make such claims and say that I am the fastest here, in fact I never post times because to me I would prefer to just run. For refference, I was able to turn a 12.66 @ 115.80mph with a bigger turbo than you and gen 6 DFI but similar set up almost two years ago. Here's the break down of the run at Norwalk June-18-2003:
r/t .788
60' 2.25
330' 5.71
1/8 8.27 @ 92.04mph
1000'10.71
1/4 12.66 @ 115.80

since then many thing have changed on the car, but this will give you a good idea of what it takes. Good luck.

today i just did some easy stuff, took out the rest of my intake valves, oxious acetylined (sp) an exhaust manifold bolt that broke off when i was taking it out, so i heated it up and took some pliers to it, then i put the cylinder head in a hot tank for like 30 minutes, it turned out pretty well, take a look

before

after

anything that still looks dirty is mostly just the water, the rest i'll get off with a wire brush

i am impressed that you are doing this stuff yourself
i am too scared to even touch a clutch much less the engine
the hardest part is going to be the time where you are breaking in the engine
i think i would have to wire the wastegate open to make sure i didnt go boosting all over the city

when i saw the topic on this thread, i could of sworn it was another bullshit post, but nonetheless, it seems u know what ur doing, props on buying it and goodluck with your new project.

I didnt even know hahn was selling kits passed stage 2. I gave up on finding out after calling them several times, telling me that stage 3 was still going under fuel developments.

havent tried that one that you have
but i can attest for the quality of the profec B spec II
had one in for over a year now and once you figure out how to use the settings (it goes in percentages to increase or decrease)

it works perfectly

ive had other friends us the turbo xs and it does leak over time and high boost levels.
