84161, Is this a sign of a bad wastegate? Posted by speakersound, Mar-24-05 07:09 AM
Hi,
I have a Star Stage II with Deltagate Mark II Wastegate with spring set to 7psi, I also have a greedy manual boost controller connected to it but it’s turned all the way down since I haven’t upgraded my fuel system. For over a year car ran fine without the boost going over 7lbs when I am on the gas, but now when I am on the gas the boost goes pass 10 Lbs. I checked all vacuums and everything looked fine to me. Is this a sign of a bad wastegate? I called turbonetics and they said it can’t be repaired and I have to buy a new one and they recommend me to Evolution since the Mark II is discontinued. I noticed the Evolution does not have a place to hook up the vacuum for your manual boost controller or does it have a place? Has anyone taken apart the Deltagate wastegate? I am scared of doing that because I am not sure if there are bunch of springs in there but I wonder if its easy to take apart and put back together?
Thank you, Tony La Crescenta, CA

can anyone help me with this?

if your not using the boost controller.....remove it to make sure that is not the problem. Make sure the vac/boost line from the compressor side is not plugged for any reason. Remove the wastegate and make sure there is no reason the valve will not move, carbon ect. next while it is out use compressed air to simulate boost and make the wastegate open. if it doesnt open then the diaphragm is poss damaged/bad. you can take it apart to chekc the diaphragm to see if it has any tears in it.

Hi,
I took out the manual boost controller, left the vac unplugged and same problem, boost will not stop at 7 lbs it will keep going over pass 10 lbs. I took the wastegate apart and didnt find anything really wrong with it, just the o ring in the middle of the wastegate is kinda worn out thats it. I also have some leak between the turbo and down pipe manifold. Whats the next step I should do?
P.S. I replaced all vac lines and re-tight all the ic piping.

Should I just replace the wastegate? Should I purchase the same kind Turbonetics Deltagate Mark II or the new model that they released called Evolution? Please let me know guys.
Thank Tony

I too have the Deltagate II WG with a 7psi spring but I use the Apexi AVCR and since I still am unsure on how it works, it's set as OFF so it does nothing but look pretty and lets the WG control the boost. As is now, I hit 10psi as you do, but also spike 15 from time to time.
I think its just a tuning problem you have. Your WG is just fine.

My wastegate has no boost controller connected to it now. Its a standalone with 7 PSI spring, it should not go past 7 lbs. Now when I am on the gas it goes over 10 lbs and I let go off the gas real fast, I dont want to find out how far it goes up and end up with a blown motor.

Sweet Jeebus, don't do that! Turbo must ALWAYS be connected to Wastegate!
Hook a NEW vacuum line (in case the old one has a crack or tear you can't see) directly from the turbo outlet nipple to the wastegate. You should see 7psi. If you don't, your wastegate is bad.

or is being massively outflowed, which i highly doubt

I dont have any vac line connected from the turbo to the wasegate, I was told I dont need to do that. I been running the car without any problems for over 3 years without any vac line connected to the wastegate and it never boosted over 7 lbs. Any other sugestions?

whoever told you that was drunk as hell. connect a vac hose from the turbo to the wastegate without your boost controller and see if you hit 7psi.
on a side note, how the hell was your booost controller hooked up? if you have a manual controller, one hose should go to the wastegate, the other to the turbo inlet nipple??

You definitely need to have a vacuum hose from your turbo outlet (somewhere on the pressurized side) to the wastegate. The wastegate works on pressure differential. Without ever sensing any pressure differential it will NEVER open. The WG does not care how much exhaust pressure there is (basically speaking).

Have any of you ever looked at A delta gate Wastegate......Thura i expect more from you.
The delta gate has thw vacuum line connections. one is boost and the other is vacuum. To run the deltagate as a regular wastegate you run a vacuum line from the compressor to the boost port and leak the vac port alone. That is what he is saying, he is not saying that there is no vacuum line runnign from the turbo to the wastegate.
If you want to use the deltagate in its "deltagate" fashion you run one vac line from the turbo to the boost port and one line from the intake to the vacuum port. that is why the wastegate has two ports on it.
I have had my boost port connected to my compressor for 3 years and left the vac port alone just as the instructions say to, and no problems.
It is not normal for a 7psi spring to boost to 10psi and spike to 15psi, anyone who believes that needs to spend less time watching sponge bob square pants and reading the instructions to a wastegate.
You need to bench test the wastegate with it out of the car to see if the plunger is actuating. use 10psi of compresser air and blow it into the boost port. the wastegate should open, if it doesnt its bad.

Well before when I had the manual boost controller one hose was connected to the vacuum and the other to the boost side of the wastegate and there there was a T connection from the boost side to the turbo vacuum. When I had the boost controller turned down all the way, It would never go over 7 lbs. After 3 years of drving, all of the sudden my boost is going up. I was told to remove the boost controller to see if thast the problem what it was not. Now the wastegate vacuum port is left open and the boost port is plugged. I also have the boost port on the turbo plugged as well. I am also getting Cylinder misfires and cam position sensor error. OBD codes are P0300, P0340, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304. I was speaking to someone in the forum and he said its possible since I am boosting more now and the fuel cant keep up with the air that I am getting misfires. Anyways, should I connect the turbo vacuum to the wastegate boost port? Before I had ran the car for few months without any of the vac lines and it never boosted over 7 lbs.
Thank you in advance.

:whoa BAD BAD BAD BAD, hook it back up immediately!
If you haven't already blown your engine that is.

yeah thats what i have said twice. Thats what everyone has said. I misunderstood and thought you did that. the compressor on the turbo goes to the boost port of the wastegate. Take your car to a shop becasue you dont know how to accurately troubleshoot a wastegate, sorry to be blunt but its apparet you do not understand the workings on a wastegate and are not following what we are telling you to do.

I connected a vac line from the wastegate to the turbo and its working fine now. Thanks for all your posts guys. I can hear the screaming wastegate now. What sucks is I took my car to a turbo performance shop few days ago and I asked if I need to connect a vac hose to the wastegate with turbo and he said no. I belived them because all they work on is turbo and I thought they would know what they are talking about. I hope the OBD II CEL lights go away.
P.S. Anyone selling parts like fuel injectors & SFMU so I would be able to boost more?
Thanks Tony CA

i think the real question now is how the hell were you not going over 7 psi before??? and of course did you blow your engine?

Well before I had a manual boost controller which was turned all the way down and it never boosted over 7lbs, problem started few weeks ago and I was driving the car like a grandma. Also I have low comp JE pistons and eagle rods, im sure that helped alot from my engine not blowing up.
