83970, running a 100 shot of nitrous Posted by injendsm, Mar-21-05 09:33 AM
ok i am contemplating running a 100 shot of nitrous on my car; not the stock bottom end of course. i am thinking it would be best to go with 10:5 compression but i am still toying with the idea of forged pistons at stock compression. if i do go through with this setup, i will be going with a direct port kit as i have heard it is best performance wise. my question is this, what supporting mods are needed to effectively spray a 100 shot on a built bottom end? im thinking an upgraded clutch, walbro fuel pump, appropriate gauges and possibly bigger injectors like 30lbers. am i missing anything here? thanks for any and all help. points to those who help.

lsd, purge kit, bottle warmer...

Why would you need the fuel pump and bigger injectors. The nitrous kit should be a wet kit so you'll be spraying both nitrous and fuel at the same time. That should take care of your needs for higher fuel. I'm sure a Walbro wouldn't hurt but the 30lb/hr injectors are completely unnecessary and would make you run really rich. If you're running 10.5:1 compression MAYBE you will want to go to 24lb/hr injectors.

i thought a walbro pump and bigger injectors might be necessary because of the amount of fuel that would be pushed with a shot that high.

lol just do it already sissy boy and quit whinning, I would hit a 100 stock. I think you should just run a 35 and let me run the 100. And remember its not likes your gonna be squeezing at every light/track on the way to where your going lol or are you? But then again... hrmmm a reliable 100 shot daily driver.Nice to have!

Fuel pump is a good idea to prevent pressure drop in the fuel rail, as well as a fuel pressure regulator, etc. I don't know that you would neccesarily need bigger injectors, if you were worried about it too much you could crank up the pressure to about 50psi or so. You could also invest in some sort of fuel controlling device, but Im not sure about the SAFC as I remember somthing about it screwing with the timing, someone help me out here. Is this a serious post, Injen, haven't you been on this forumn for a while?

ive been on the forum for a while but i cant really recall hearing too much about anyone seriously doing a 100 shot setup on a daily driver so im trying to make sure that i have all my bases covered before i get myself involved in something that i will regret down the road.

That is a joke, right? Talk about lame advice, Rob. :rolleyes Greg knows better than to spray more than a 75 on stock internals.
Personally, Greg, I would suggest picking up the kit first and learning the ropes on your stock internals with a 50 shot or so. You're going to rebuild before the bigger shot, so there is less worry about blowing your shit to hell up front. I'd rather get my practice tuning a nitrous-equipped car on some stock pistons I have plans to replace than risk doing something stupid to a brand new bottom end, know what I mean?

Yea take it easy heRo Brian, I'm pretty sure Greg knows I'm joking with him as we have this conversation quite a bit on aim. And just an fyi theres not alot of tuning going on running a 50 shot on a stock motor....what are you talking about gapping the plugs? lol but good advice from you though. And my thoughts on just practicing with nitrous is well kinda iffy if you plan on blowing it up n2o style, it tends to leave more of a aftermath. And yea I can see what you mean, you've been to the blown up bottom end before lol

83985, RE: running a 100 shot of nitrous Posted by Collente, Mar-21-05 01:33 PM
I blew my first motor with a 50 shot of nx.. And I ran 75 shot of zex, before I went turbo on my built motor. There is no tuning involved, but you can go with a colder set of plugs.
I would personally reccomend a walbro pump to ensure your pressure doesnt fluctuate at all.
You can run a 100shot on stock bottom end, but your pushing it hard.
Thats like running 10psi. its possible but your pushin yer luck.
Edit: To be more on topic, I would run 10:5 compression with n20. That would be a sick amount of power with n20 and a little more umph.. in your everyday driving. But at 100shot of n20 you are more worried about burning up valves then anything else. If you upgraded your head with some ss valves ud be set!

rob was jokin, i do talk bout this to him every now and then on aim so he gives me a hard time bout it. as far as sprayin a 35 or 50 shot on the stock bottom end before rebuilding, im a little reluctant to do that because i know that by the time the kit is in place i will have close to 120k miles since i have some bodywork to take care of first and i dont want to push it too much. i will probably keep the shot at a 75 on the rebuilt engine and once i get used to it, bump it up to 100. i understand what you are saying tho, its been in the back of my mind since i started thinking of this setup to advance in 'levels' of shot before i hit 100 instead of just going straight to it.

lol i wont ever spray on the street cause the cops here are assholes and i dont want to risk getting caught doing that shit here. i will only use it at the track and it wont be every weekend, maybe just a couple times a month. i just want to make sure i take every precaution necessary to ensure this car stays somewhat reliable. btw, i am going to be using the venolia pistons from ERT at stock compression.

would a spec stage 1 clutch hold up to the added power of the 100 shot or would i need a 3? man, i almost feel like a newb right now.

Ok here is my 2 cents, I think you will probly want to invest in some ss valves when you do you bottom end. I hear about more people melting valves then i do pistons. But with the combination of forged bottom end and the ss valves you should be able to pull off a 150 shot.

i was thinking ss valves would be needed. anything else for the head? i will probably put some nitrous grind cams as well as some cam gears in there later on but is there anything that would insure the engine was capable of handling a 100 to 150 shot? thanks for the input btw.

You guys are making my head hurt. Stock FP on a 96+ is 52psi. The FPR is NOT vacuum referenced so you are running 52psi all the time. It's true that if you were jetted high enough on the fuel side that it could potentially cause a pressure drop in the rail but that's highly unlikely on a 100 shot. If you want to caution on the side of error then get it. You might be ok with just a fuel pump rewire mod.

SS valves are a good investment ... it'll prevent you from toasting your valves. If you get cams definitely get some cam gears to fine tune your timing. With the cams may come some idle issues because of less vacuum but that really depends on how aggressive the cam profile is. I don't know if the stage 1 clutch will hold 150 but I'm sure it'll be fine holding 75-100. Obviously just don't spray right when you dump the clutch. Get rolling first.

well as far as ss valves are concerned, would i just want the valves themselves or would i be smart to invest in the springs and retainers as well? crower has valve springs and retainers for about 270. as far as cams were concerned, i was thinking of either crane #12's or crower 2's mated with fidanza cam gears. would a v1 safc help in fine tuning the idle with the cams? as far as the clutch it concerned, i think i may just do it right the first time and get a stage 3 so that if i do decide to bump it up to 150, i dont have to buy all new parts. thanks for the help thura.

With high lift cams you'd probably want the springs (get PT lifters & rockers while you're at it). Retainers not so important but wouldn't hurt (Ti retainers are stronger and lighter). I know with the Crower 2s that you'll have issues at idle and a v1 SAFC (not the AFC) will help that considerably. I think stage 3 clutch (I'm assuming we are talking Clutchmasters) would be overkill for a 150 shot but if I remember correctly there is no price difference between stage 2 and 3.

this is going to sound like a stupid question but where can i get pt lifters and rockers from? im guessing howell or a pt forum? i was thinking spec for the clutch since they are good from what i hear and are priced nicely.

i just thought of one more thing, would anything need to be done to the ingition aspect of the car aside from colder plugs?

I dont remember what happened to his car though. But as far as fuel goes, all he listed was a walbro.
