I have the regular 16g which im just totally lost on. The turbo has a little shaft play so i want to rebuild it. I can buy a rebuild kit for a 100 bucks. Now my question is Since i have shaft play is there any machine involved. Ive rebuilt plenty of engines but no turbos. I dont want to waste the money to upgrade to a 20g for 500 bucks when i can buy a new 25g for 800. but then im still left with this 16g. I just wanna really get the most for my buck. If i can rebuild it myself for a 100 bucks i think ill go that route and then ebay it.

And does hahns make portfueler system for the 25g. I imagine its just bigger injectors.

few guys here run 25g's yea. ETX (derek) specifically.

the hahn portfueler isnt turbo specific, it can be used with any turbo setup because all it is is a plate between the manifold and head with 4 additional injector bosses and a boost dependent injector controller.

about the turbo rebuild...

ive never rebuilt one either, but its not hard at all to pull one apart and put it back together. the thing is, on a typical turbo rebuild they put it on a machine that balances it, and that you cant do. i think its more worth the peace of mind having it rebuilt than rebuilding it yourself and having some unforeseen problem, or worse case having to rebuild it again soon. i think financially, the best idea is to buy the rebuild kit separate...and then shop around for a company that will do the actual rebuild and balance.

Really from speaking with guys that have the 25G there are very mixed reviews. Some say they love the size of the housing since little or no boost is made while in street rpm's and some hate how late it spools in 2nd gear and doesn't really spool at all in 1st. It's definately not designed for a stock 420A head with stock cams and a 7200 rpm rev limit. To take advantage of a turbo like that you should look into crower 2 cams and some mild head porting and ignition control to raise your rev limit. Honestly for the money you spend on that 25g i would get a Garrett GT series and love every second you are in your car. The turbo has the same flange as the 16g = bolts up to your existing manifold with a lil bit of work. All that is left is figuring out what you are going to do with a wastegate option. To me the 25g isn't an option, it's a 20g (still spools in street rpm's) or a Garrett GT.

i like the turbo. once it spools, you better get a grip cause it will rip you back. i was running like 20psi on it. def not for the low rev'ed cars. and standalone is a major plus. need the higher rev limit to take advantage of the turbo.

Just because the turbo has shaft play, doesnt mean its bad..Now if its leaking oil, or the compressor blades are hitting the housing, then yes, it needs a rebuild. The 16G or S16g(or most any NON ball bearing turbo), NEEDS a little shaft play, because oil needs to get in the bearing surfaces to do its job(just like a crank journal and a rod bearing). My S16g has just a bit of shaft play also, but its just fine.

I dont think you will be happy with such a large turbo as a 25G. On our motors, the size of that turbo creates a high spool up rpm, and since we dont have super high revving motors, then that gives very little rpm usage to make usable power. The key to using this turbo on our motors, would be to use things such as nitrous to help spool it up in the lower rpm. I think the 25G would make a great drag strip turbo, providing you have all the necessary equipment/setup to go along with it. If you have a daily driver/street car, the 25G is not a wise choice..

no i loved the ride in the car, smoothest transition into boost i've ever felt in a non turbo turbo'ed car. But if he's looking to drive this daily or even around town... not really the right turbo for the job. If i was in that same position i'd look at the 20g. It's a great all around turbo! I went with the 16g cause i know where my limitations are at this point and it suits my needs and where i want my boost to start. Plus Matt gave me a kick ass deal on it!

for a street turbo i think a 20g or equivalent is perfect.

thanks for the help guys. My 16g doesnt spray any oil. I was always told shaft play is a bad thing. the blades arent hitting the housing but thanks for clearing that up. I was looking at some garret turbos. I cant seem to find one that has an internal waste gate. Is there any other place out there that will upgrade the 16g to a 20 cheaper than hahns?
