83431, Got my T3... not exactly thrilled Posted by GSGoinFast, Mar-07-05 07:43 AM
Ok, so the auction said there was minor shaft play. well it came today. the exhaust turbine has imo quite a bit of shaft play(i have no experience with turbos so that isnt worth much), but there is absolutely no scuffing of the walls at all. the intake side doesnt have as much shaft play, and while there isnt any apparent scuffing of the compressor housing, you can see that where the compressor wheel is it is much cleaner on the housing. but the thing spins freely. so im stumped on what to do, would it be ok to run it like this, or do i have to rebuild it, cuz i really dont want to. and ive read that you will get a little more shaft play when there is no oil in it, which there isnt. so i dunno i need help. i also gotta clock it, loosen the 6 bolts right? if i remove those bolts, can i take the compressor housing off this way? i wanna just take it off and look around, but im not sure if it is bad for it. thanks for the help.

ok well i took the compressor housing off, and measured the shaft play on the cold side. i only had a tape measurer with standard measurments on it but it was about 1/16th of an inch... which according to my calculations is about 2.5mm??? thats not extremely bad is it? ive been seeing 1-2mm is usually a safe zone. does this require a rebuild? also, its apparent there is a tiny band around the intake of the compressor housing that has been rubbed a little by the compressor... the fins dont look damaged at all, just a little shiny on the leading edges... would it be ok to dremel a tiny bit of this band out to prevent any further contact? just a thought, dont beat me if its absolutly stupid and horrible for the turbo. thanks for the help

Just run it.. if it smokes, rebuild it when it starts to bother you.
My T3/T4 has more shaftplay than that, never smokes, and never contacts the housing during normal operation. However, if i wiggle it while cold with no oil in the housing, i can make the compressor touch the housing. I'm not going to rebuild it until it fucking explodes or starts to pour oil out.

that sucks, sometimes your better off buying new. That part is the heart of what your trying to do. Hopefully you'll get it fixed. You know my turbo install. Here I've been messing around because it's dumping fuel, well wasn't anything I did, I got a bad FMU from vortech the thing is stuck closed and forcing fuel through. This is just one problem for you. But your building the right way....you'll save a couple grand.
