I'm thinking about buying a new motor from this place that offers a shortblock or longblock (valve cover to oil pan). I'm really considering the longblock, which comes with crane cams and the whole deal. I 'm wondering if there is any unwanted baggage that comes with upgrading your cams. The plus of it all is that I don't have to rip apart the block I have and put the stock top-end on the new bottom-end and it will have all aftermarket top-end. That makes my life easier.

It comes with custom JE's 8.1:1, eagle rods etc. even the high flow oil pump. so its a complete deal, just slap on the manifolds more or less. What do you think for under 4k?

sounds kinda expensive. 8.1:1 comp is lowww.

Well I can change it to whatever, but they said they sell that compression usually.

I have a super-16g, and plan to go 12-13psi when I get this motor. I originally wanted to get stock compression but a two people recommended a step under stock, which I thought was 8.1? What would you say? Where should the price be?

I mean, I'm not looking to tune to the point where my car will never pass inspection, so I don't want to go too far with this crap.

Well, howell's is almost 5K. It comes with everything you have mentioned, including the cams. Compression is 8.6

My question is how reputable is this other place? Howell (although ships slow) is a good company to go with.

Yeah I looked howell's over.

It seems with the place I got they give you a fully rounded motor.
Lets put it this way, for a guy who wants more of a street car, is it worth getting the top end? I mean, for what I have planned 350hp is the most i'll care to push in the end.
Can anyone tell me how the top end will truly benefit me?
We're talking a $1600 dollar difference compared to the bottom-only.

a rebuild short block will run around 1600 add timing 2000.

head will run you between 600-1200 depsending on what is all upgraded.

stock compresson is 9.6:1
most turbo people go with 8.8:1

i think its basically this simple...if you can afford the longblock, get it. better to replace everything at once if you can. trust me, once you get a built engine, ans start boosting...you WILL want more power, and it will be found with cams/cam gears/ etc. if you cant afford it, or it will be very tight financially, get the shortblock and you can always upgrade later. cams, lifters/rockers, and cam gears are easy to add. you will notice a power difference with cams...plus the idle is nice. :)

Money is basically what is the deciding factor here. Dropping 4k puts a dent in the wallet before I even begin the install, where buying the block for $2400 will cost me about $3400-3600 by the time its installed.

Someone mentioned earlier i can get a rebuilt block for $1600-$2000, can anyone tell me where?

Does anyone know a good place to take your DSM in central new jersey or of anyone wanting to make some money? (long block or short block willingness?)

I dont know how "comfortable? you are in turning your own wrenches...but if you buy a pre-built shortblock, it isnt very hard at all to swap your old head onto it. Heck, even easier would be if you bought the entire long-block...then you would just basically have to pull the old engine, and install the new one. if you got a lift, or access to one, you can knock that out in a day. even if you decide to have a mechanic do it...if you provide the new longblock to him, i would not pay anymore than 500 bucks labor for what is basically a simple engine swap to them. Goodluck man.

I am comfortable doing almost anything as long as I have enough beer. :)

But seriously, I would be interested in doing it myself for the experience but I have no idea what specific tools I'll need if any, and what other baggage comes along with the job.

are there instructions out there I can look over to see if I want to take it on?
