82742, Exhaust manifold options Posted by xcasbonx, Feb-15-05 09:32 AM
Okay well I won this auction on what appears to be one of Alains exhaust manifolds. heres the link.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7952625777
Now it appears this manifold is not setup for an external wastegate, but my question here is would it be possible still to set this manifold up for one? Getting the flanges and materials would not be a problem for me and I have a friend who is an excellent welder, TIG and MIG certified. I'm just not clear on the concept of setting one up and the correct pipe size to use for setting up the turbo and wastegate flanges. I'll be using a T3 50 trim turbo btw.
Any help and insight is appreciated...thank you.

yea thats alains and yes it can be setup for an external gate very easily

cut a hole out and weld in a flange for whatever wastegate you'll be using. it helps to keep the wastegate on the same side as the turbine for the turbo though for ease of plumbing if you're going to run the dump back into the downpipe
edit: definately have it professionally welded though, the welder will heat it up and then weld it ensuring heat cycling wont crack it or comprimise the strength of the welds over time, MIG or TIG will work just fine if he does it properly

yes it's was one of mine a member was selling it long story short he ordered a t-25 manifold but we didn't knew¸ him and I, that his turbo was with the Nissan flange while I did a mitsu flange
you could rework it easily , just be sure that you have schedule 40 pipping you could cut it open between cylinder 1 and 2 and put a wastegate flange there

No worries he's certified in MIG and TIG. He works here at the same company I do welding aluminum and steel tower and overhead highway sign structures, we follow all ASTM material specifications as well as AISC and CWB certified welding procedures. I don't see him having a problem doing this, we'll probably be able to do it after hours here at the plant.
I'm a little unclear on what diameter pipe to use for the flanges? Turby you said just cutting a hole and welding the flange on the hole will work?? Wouldn't it be hard to lay a bead around the flange with it just sitting there. We have various sizes of SCH 40 pipe, I just need to know an OD and wall thickness.
Thanks guys.

I think the best way is to get the WG and see what dia. you need. That's what I did when I welded my WG flange on my manifold. I made the flange, bolted it to the WG, tacked it to the mainfold were I wanted it, took everything off, finished welding the flange and then drilled the hole through the manifold. That way I was sure to get everything were I wanted it. :thumbsup

the flange you use for the wastegate will determine what size piping you'll want. or you can weld it up like this ;)

I wanna switch to an external wastegate setup.
