82667, egt or aeromotive Posted by baxsom, Feb-14-05 01:21 PM
i am starting to buy the mods necessary to install on the car before i order a megasquirt from Mr Slick aermotive fpr, fuel injectors, wideband etc etc
question is how necessary is an egt gauge i know that they are useful tools but i have read threads saying that they are the greating thing in the world and others that say that they are just nice to have
to get a MS up and running I dont think i need the egt yet do I?
thanks

Regardless of the fuel setup you have I would HIGHLY recommend having the ability to monitor your EGT's.

EGTs are extremely important. i have many other gauges (fuel pressure, oil pressre, dynojet wideband, intake temp, oil temp, water temp and boost) but still rely on my egt gauge very much and usually look at it while boosting over anything else.

being mechanical, i would consider the EGT gauge to be the most fool proof at detecting an impending failure. AF gauges and widebands are electronic in addition to having mechanical sensors so there's more possibility of malfunctioning. basically you know your engine is fine if the EGTs are good...why not get one.

thanks for the info i have just read so many people going back and forth over which one is better between the wideband and the egt
seeing as how the dakota digital egt is 150 for the gauge and the sensor it is a worth while investment i think
i am looking at the plx-m300 wideband because it replaces my stock o2 that way i dont have to add in another bung for it i just dont want to get ready for install and realize that i have missed something important

dont replace your stock o2 sensor. add another bung.

forgive my ignorance but if the plx has both narrow and wideband capability what is the need for two

why possibly cause yourself more problems. having another bung put in is not a big deal.
also.. the stock o2 sensor is too close to the turbo for most wideband o2 sensors. it needs to be farter down the line. mine is behind my flex pipe which is the perfect location.

cool that makes sense will there be a difference in readings depending on where it is put behind the DP

yep...put it in the #4 manifold runner. the idea is to get as high a reading as possible. now obviously, higher number are bad, but if you are getting higher numbers at least you know they are accurate. if you mount the probe in a funky place and get low readings, you may think youre at 1300 under boost because you installed the probe in the DP when in reality youre at 1550 degrees in the manifold. better to see high numbers and be worried about tuning than see low numbers and not know anything is wrong until something gets destroyed internally
EDIT: another note, if and when you decide to install the probe in the #4 runner, install it in the side of the runner, rather than on the top. it will be easier to route the thermocouple wiring if its on the side and also if you ever decide to construct a heat shield for the exhaust manifold (which i am doing now) it will be a lot less of a headache to have to worry about lining up a hole in the shield for the EGT probe if the probe is towards the bottom side of the runner instead of the top

definetly install the probe in the 4th runner. ontop or the side doesn't matter for use. the 4th runner tends to run hotter than all the rest, therefore if #4 is good, you can rest more assured that the others are fine.

wideband = no reason for EGT.

not when you have complete fuel and ign control, and it's tuned properly. which is one in a million for 2gnt owners.

EGT looks cool too :) I would also keep your existing o2 and add on the other. PLX is a good choice btw. I was bout 5 min from getting it when suieclipse sold me his techedge.

i think he was asking about placement of the WB 02 not the EGT... :shrug

you're correct. regardless, if he decides to go with an EGT in addition, it doesnt hurt to know where to put the EGT probe as well as the wideband bung.
