82455, rebuild or replace turbo?
Posted by eclipse98rsHRC, Feb-09-05 02:55 PM
During a recent "shipping/handling" incident, the turbo came apart! Damage was sustained on the inside of the housing (nicks, gouges, etc.) and the blades were bent-not alot, but still bent. Without any pics (no digital camera), is this something one would rebuild/port, polish or is it a throwaway due to its condition? It is less than 2 years old, raised on synthetic oil, and always given proper cool-down time. One of Hahn's 16g turbos, it has never been taken apart before this incident- I cannot imagine how that clip came off!!! Not to mention the vacuum line fitting (on the compressor) was cracked and at a 90 degree angle. What do you guys think?

part it out and buy a 20g. will probably take you a long time to part out though. when i blew my motor (hydrolock) i took in so much water i was sure that i had mangled the compressor wheel blades and had already planned on having to spend the cash on the 20g. but alas, the turbo was in perfect condition...i must have been under vacuum when i hit the water.

What do you mean by "part it out"? Sell it, bad or good to some unsuspecting buyer? Not me. I won't sell anything I wouldn't buy. Or do you mean sell it piece by piece? That's not an option-I've never seen any parts/pieces of a 16g for sale in our forums.
The rpm's the turbo spins at makes me wonder if a bent blade that was straightened will fail...

yeah i meant sell the ok parts...the housings in particular have to be worth a good bit and they obviously arent damaged. of course i wouldnt ask you to dump the whole thing on someone. but i bet someone who knew how to rebuild turbos would be interested in it for more than the $0 you'd get if you tossed it.

Get a new turbo or go for an upgrade. I priced out re-builds this past summer for my turbo and the prices to rebuild were within a few hundred dollars of just buying a new turbo. Get the 20G!
