i need to grab a wire brush and some polish of some sort in order to remove all the rust thats built up on the turbine housing...what type of brush should i use and what type of polish/cleaner should i get?

I would just wire brush the housing, and then wash it off. Do not let it air dry, but rather, take a rag and dry it off. Then, what I do to mine is go to NAPA or some other auto-parts store and buy some Copper-Spray-a-gasket. Coat the housing and then run the car for about 10mins. The copper spray will turn into many pretty colors before it ends at gunmetal gray. The rust will not return, unless scraped off.

thanks. i got the wire brushes and naval jelly tonight, along with some 1200-degree primer and black paint that i am going to try tomorrow and see if it will stay put with the turbine heated. 1200 is probably pretty close to what the outside of the housing gets up to if the inside is at 1500 degrees. if the paint burns off i'll get the copper gasket spray and try your method. i do need to make a heat shield though...does anyone know where to buy a heat shield for the 16g? ATPTurbo sells polished shields for the t3/t4 but not the 16g

You beat me to it, lol!!

Fuck a wire brush. I put all mine in a blasting cabnet and they come out shiney. If you don't coat them with something they will look like that again soon after. The copper spray is the cheapest way, but ceramic is the nicest and keeps the shine for some time.

I can post some before and after pics of the td04h that I'm currently working on if you like.

what is the best way to apply this copper spray? Do you take it apart and spray it or do you just tape off the section you don't want sprayed? What method did all that have done it use?

Dude Cyan it's gonna look like shit again in a week. I would suggest disassembling the turbo and sending the turbine housing off for a nice jethot coating. Or pull the turbo and send it to Hahn and they can do it for ya.

Edit: That 1200 digree paint is Balllls. Even if you cure it at 400*F like the directions say it's still balls.

I say ceramic coat it also. Thats the best your gonna get, and for your looks you will want that.

theres no way in hell im gonna try and take that turbo and manifold off again...that was the biggest pain in the ass to put on in the first place with those manifold bolts. ill just make a heat shield to cover it...i need one anyway my hood is toasted.

Etx is right that 1200 degree paint will come off within a day of driving. Dont waste your long hours of cleaning with that junk.

It will burn off very soon. The manifold gets....HOT. Just get Copper gasket spray and be done with it.

i think it will too...im just being optimistic. if it burns off i may never see it because i should have my carbon fiber heat shield installed within the next week or so. i finished the template and cut the first layer of the shield, which is a piece of 26-gauge aluminum. right now im looking for some sort of insulating material to sandwich between the bottom layer of aluminum and the top layer which will be carbon. the shield is one piece and covers the entire exhaust manifold, then curves upward as it goes towards the front of the car to cover the turbine. it has cutouts for the turbo oil feed line and my EGT probe on the #4 runner. it has a metal tab on the far right top edge that is folded downwards and bolts to an open hole on the bottom right of the cylinder head that normally has this black bracket bolted to it. i will post pictures and a scan of the cutout when im done with it.
