81845, egt probe confusion
Posted by baxsom, Jan-26-05 11:53 AM
ok i have done some searching on where to put an egt probe
most everyone says to put it on #4 cylinder closest to the battery

my mechanic said that it should go on the #1 cylinder (passengers side) because the fuel comes in from right to left when looking at it so if any cylinder goes lean it would be the last injector on the fuel rail

his 4g63 is on the #4 cylinder farthest on the right because his fuel lines go left to right so that is where his reasoning comes from

any truth to the matter
or should i go with putting it on the #4 cylinder

You want it to read the exhaust gas temperature after combustion. Best accurate reading is right after the combustion happens and the expent gas is being blown out. This happens in cylinder 4. You want it to pick up reading where it gets the hottest quick.

WTF are you talking about? Jesus V.

it's been shown that #4 is typically the hottest cylinder on a 420A. The fuel from left-to-right thing is a myth for the most part. there is no significant pressure drop within the rail when an injector opens, especially with the size injectors typically used on a 2GNT, and the size pumps we feed them with.

#4 it is

anyone have a pic of theirs on the manifold?

admit it
you just wanted to show off that cool manifold
is that paint or powdercoat

Its actually copper gasket spray, lol. That was before the motor was started. Its like a powdery gray now. Its kinda like a backyard powdercoating. It works, nothings rusting or lookin ugly, lol. MrSlick gave me that idea.

I bought a half star stage 2 turbo kit from optikal which he bought off melinko (I think that is his name) anyways. The egt probe was install on the dp is that of any use? Since there is a hole drilled there already should I just install the probe there or is it pretty much useless?

i have been reading here that a probe in the dp will give you an overall temp reading
but wont tell if a specific cylinder is running hot

plus the reading will be lower because it is farther away

i saw somewhere that 1600 is good for manifold
1400 for dp
but of course the posts i read it on could be wrong

Mine's on the bottom so that it clears the heat shield I had fabricated for the manifold.

anyone got a pic of their STAR manifold with the egt tapped into it?
gracias doooood's

that's what I was trying to say Oh Dark lord. Trust me, what i typed didn't seem to make much sense to me neither, but as long as I got cylinder 4 in there, then it's all good. Oh btw, it would make sense that cylinder 4 is the hottest on our cars since 9 0ut of 10 of us get's that piston blown out or the rings gave way.

I also went by the "common" statistics and placed it at #4 cyl.:shrug

Mine is tapped in the center right before the oulet flange.

Mine is also in the center. That is were Hahn put it when I told them to tap it for the prob. I wonder what difference in the temp reading this would make from being in the number 4 exhaust runner?

star users, post pics of your manifold tapped for the egt!!!!!

I went after the turbo with my egt probe. It even says in the autometer instruction to place 2" after the turbo. It is a option and many have diffrent views on this subject. The the egt is a monitoring device just watch your temps.

The advantage of having it in a specific runner (namely #4 on ours) is to eliminate the "averaging out" effect that happens if you put it in the center or the downpipe.

I don't imagine the difference would be tremedously different, but then again, I've never run both setups. (Mine's in #4) But if there was a cylinder you want to watch, it's that guy.

The best setup, run by Gary Donovan (10 second K-car) is 4 EGT gauges for obvious reasons.

Has anyone used the 2 channel egt gauge from autometer? Does it have 2 probes?
