The UPS god finally arrived with the Forced Performance 3065 turbo }(

The polished version costs 200 more, not worth it...IMO
It has V-bands for the Tial 44mm wastegate and downpipe. The custom stainless steel housing is one of the best features..along with the Garrett GT30 cartridge

I just dropped it off at TorqueFreaks with the flange for the manifold. The long part is waiting for the manifold to get built...

That was originaly going to be my turbo for this stage...im going to hold off till mid year to get one...

Either that or go with a nice nitrous shot to acheive my goal

If it would include a turbo like that the price of your kit would be at least 700 dollars more (and thats a top end turbo...it does not fit everyones need)

It makes life so much eaiser for the manifold. You don't have to worry about a WG flange on the manifold or a fifth runner. Usually when they are on the manifold they stick out too much.

I really couldnt see to understand. Gimme a quick 101 on how these clamps work. Im assuming there cupped like a V, but how do they fasten? Do they tighten like a hose clamp or what. Also, gimme a pick on how the DP flange looks. Is it just a tapered ring or something. Sorry for the questions, lol, Ive just never seen one.
By the way, that is a really pretty turbo. Nice pick man.

This is from Forced Performance's site explaining the V-bands and the reason for the turbo housing:

"The heart of the FP30 series turbochargers is the Garrett Ballistic Concepts GT30 cartridge, or CHRA (Center Housing Rotating Assembly). These are great cartridges, full ball bearing design lets them spin in a light breeze. Their low inertia turbine blades contribute to rapid shaft acceleration. The flow capacity and high efficiency of these newly engineered turbine blades is hard to believe for a wheel of it's size.

The GT30 turbine wheel is smaller in diameter than the Mitsubishi TD06 and TD06H turbine wheels but flows far more, allowing greater boost pressure without unfavorably high ratios of exhaust to intake pressure. To put it simply, the intake manifold pressure stays higher than the exhaust manifold pressure under a wider range of operating conditions. This is good.

Having a modern cartridge with ball bearings and super efficient blades isn't going to do anyone any good if it doesn't bolt up. The existing 7cm^2 and 8cm^2 Mitsubishi turbine housings were not only too small for the GT30 turbine wheel, but mass production design compromises such as an offset non-symetric volute and poor material made them very undesirable. It was decided to abandon attempts to force them to work. Design work started on a totally new turbine housing. A truly perfect turbine housing worthy of the GT30 CHRA.

The result of the research is our race inspired totally symmetric volute scaled to perfectly match the dimensions of the GT30 turbine wheel. This larger housing incorporates a built in wastegate mount which offers simplified installation without compromising boost control like inferior internal wastegates. Boost pressure can be set as low as 14psi without ANY boost creeping at higher RPM.

Another feature of the housing is the turbine inlet. 60mm diameter and as smooth as an extrude honed housing throughout the entire volute, the FP30 housing does not require a $95 port job in order for it to perform properly! There has never been a housing like this available to the public.

To avoid a common problem with turbocharger exhaust housings, cracking, the FP30 turbine housing is investment cast in 310 stainless steel for high temperature strength and corrosion resistance. Test units in the field for almost two years showed no cracking or erosion. The FP30 turbine housing casting also offers a weight savings of almost 5 pounds over the OEM Mitsubishi 7cm^2 and 8cm^2 housings.

To further simplify and reduce weight an F1 style low profile V-band clamp is used for main turbine discharge. V-band clamps are much lighter and quicker to connect than typical 4 and 5 bolt flanges. Kiss that crow foot 14mm wrench goodbye. A single 7/16 nut is all that stands between you and DP removal."

Bigbald has basically the same turbo (FP3052) and has a pic of his dowpipe clamped on.

Holy crap!!! Stainless steel, i've been waiting for someone to use this on a turbo (mite be others out there, jus havent seen em). Iron is crap. Stainless steel can resist over 150 degrees more heat, is lighter, twice as strong, and doesn't rust (someone whos been in metalurgy as long as i have has to know these things). Why is using stainless a new concept for a turbo? Price maybe?

Stainless is nice, but it isn't all that heat resistant... It is a lot less thermally conductive.

I would rather see them use an Inconel, maybe 625, but that would add a bit to the price.

1750 degrees isn't heat resistant enuff for you...lol...i've heating a simple piece of 2 diamter stainless to 2300 on accident in a heat stress, took the insulation off and you could see straight through the pipe, but it never bent nor melted. I'd say that heat resistant enuff. You'll never get tht housing that hot, i dont care if ya runnin 1000 horsepower turbo.

stainless steel is a PITA to work with. You need special tools to precsion cut it etc... Its not a "soft" metal you could say

That turbo is very nice indeed.

But to answer some questions... Outside of tooling cost and other operations to actually cast or mill stainless steel, the stainless in general contains a higher thermal expansion rate than iron. because of this it is much easier to develop hairline stress fractures from the expansion and contraction as it heats and cools with repeat usage. This may be a reason why there aren't a ton on the market today. To help get around that a higher quality 321 or even a low carbon 304 or 316 could be used with a thicker wall. However in real world scenarios it may not make sense because stainless steel prices have gone through the roof. Anything over the "industry" standard T304 and SUS304 have nearly doubled in cost. As for iconel, it averages out to being four times the cost of stainless and double the cost of titanium. Either of those would be great, but instead of a high quality $1300 stainless housing, try getting something like that for less than $5000. The FP turbo looks well thought out and already carries a great reputation, this thing should kick ass for you. Enjoy!
