My turbo is not on yet, but I've installed my Vortech FMU. Now the car has less power. Is the FMU making the car run richer or something? Just wandering if anyone else has had this problem.

Also, my oil light comes on when the car idles around 700-800 rpm. Checked the oil, its on the max, there is good oil pressure running through. When I installed my feed line I had to strectch the wires for the oil pressure sensor's harness to get it on the sensor. Could I have damaged a wire or the sensor? And, does it matter if the sensor malfunctions? Will it effect anything?

Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I tee'd off the block, on one end of the tee, it goes into the block, on the other is where the feed line hooks up, and the middle is where I screwed in the sender. After, tightening the tee the hole for the sender was pointing at a downward angle, that why I had to stretch the wires.

Sorry for the long post.

1- How do you know your car has less power if you dont have the turbo on? How did you drive the car to notice this?

2- Yes it could matter if you messed up the wires on the oil pressure sender, you may not be getting enough oil now to the turbo, whats your oil pressure reaings at?

Just driving it down the road and opening it up.

I stuck it in first, gave a little gas and let out the clutch.

I havent measured the pressure with a gauge yet. Just took off the feed line, (i have the oil looped through the feed line into the drain line), and noticed I had some pretty good oil pressure shooting out into the container I used to contain the oil. And there are no leaks at all in the system.

On the oil pressure sender question I asked- I used teflon tape on the NPT fittings. Could this be preventing the sender from getting a good enough ground, and therefore making it trigger the oil light. When I idle, it doesnt come on, until the rpms get around 700-800. Then the light flickers, and becomes solid if the rpms go down more, (like when the cooling fan turns on, or the a/c is turned on).

still a little confused here...
i dont understand how you drivng your car without your turbo installed but you have everything else put in....??

also, not sure why your light is flickering, imo, maybe your wires arent connected good enough. this exact same thing hapened to me last year though when i spun 2 rod bearings :( the oil light would flicker on and off real fast only when at idle....

It doesnt flicker on and off. It comes on, but dim, and the brightness fluctuates. Then if the rpms get a little lower, it is solid.

All thats installed from my kit is the oil lines and the FMU. You can drive a car with those on.

When i searched the forums, one came up where a guy said he ran without one and didnt have any problems except for the light.

hmm not sure then, intresting.
im gonna go out on a limb on this one, but maybe because the light comes on and off because the feed line is installed. the sensor may think it doesnt have enough oil pressure or something since some of the oil is go through the feedline, not sure though.

why dont you try taking the feedline off and then starting it again and see if you get the same problem.......

What do u think about the FMU question? Could it be making me run too rich and hurt performance?

Could I have hooked it up wrong? I ran a fuel line from the fuel return port hard pipe to the IN on the FMU, (fitting on side), and ran a fuel line from the OUT, (center fitting), to the stock FPR.
The vacuum line is from the manifold, so I know its good.

I'm 100% sure but I think you have this hooked up wrong.

I think you have it hooked-up wrong. Put a hose from FPR to "IN"(side barb) of FMU..."OUT" (center barb) of FMU to fuel return port.

Also how is your fuel pump installed? Is it in right or did you africian americanize it?

Fuel pump install: Remove rear seat. This is where you will find your fuel pump. Disconnect fuel line and fuel return and remove fuel pump. Modifing pump bracket to fit new fuel pump. New pump is slightly longer than stock. Remove stock pump from bracket, remove small piece of fuel line from bracket. Now you have to trim about 1/2" off the stock fuel pump assembly barb (where hose was attached) this will allow new pump to fit into place(do not cut or modify fuel pump). You may have to trim hose to and replace hose clamps with better ones because of fuel pressure.

if you haven't already gotten it fixed, you had the hosesw reversed. the port on the bottom of the fmu is the OUT port, which goes to your fuel return line. the port on the side goes to the FPR

Do you have the vac line hooked up? If so, thats why. When you get on it, the fuel pressure will rise and you will run rich cuz your not getting enough air to compensate the fuel. Just an idea, lol. Hope you figure it out.

if your on stock internals and fuel system, besides the FMU, i think your gonna run rich all the time bro...

The FMU raises the fuel pressure when boost is present. I dont have a turbo on, so I'm not producing any boost.

I know that. But there is a difference in power from before I installed and after. I know our cars run rich stock. But could installing the FMU make it run a little richer, even though I'm not boosting. And making it too rich, to where it hurts performance.

about the oil issure, my oil light did the EXACT same thing you are describing. i checked the oil pressure and it was fine, so i installed an oil pressure gauge instead of the sending unit. i figured my sending unit was just bad, or it could have something to do with the turbo. nevertheless, my car is running fine 3 months later, so check your pressure and you should be okay. the fuel issue is interesting, since the fmu shouldnt be kicking in until you install the turbo. good luck

The oil light will come on if it sees less than 4psi of pressure. (I think it's 4--if not, right around there). At idle, since you have the feed line and return line hooked with very little restriction, the sensor is probably reacting to that. I'm assuming when the turbo is in the path, the pressure will rise and the problem will be gone. You said that it's only at idle right?

What is your fuel pressure now that you put the FMU in? Is it too high? My thought would be to throw a gauge on it and see. If it's too high, every time the injector opens, more fuel goes in and it runs rich. You can get a gauge from Summit for cheap. I dunno, just my .02

Cool, you guys are a lot of help. :thumbsup I'm gonna get a fuel pressure gauge anyways cause I want to monitor my fuel pressure when I put the turbo on. The oil pressure issue is only at idle, but today when I drove it didnt do it once.
I guess the fuel pressure could be higher than normal, i dunno. I have an a/f gauge, it always shows rich, cause our cars run a little rich. But now if i press the gas pedal just a little bit, it goes rich. But we'll see when I put the turbo on this weekend.

LOL, i should have bought the S-FMU or a Cartech FMU, maybe then I wouldnt have this problem.

When idling theres vacume. then you step on the gas then is less and that may cause the FMU to raise the pressure.
81714, RE: Vortech FMU
Posted by ericeclipse2, Jan-23-05 03:00 PM
Oh. I thought it would only raise fuel pressure with boost.

I also noticed that after idling for about 10 minutes, my a/f ratio gauge showed all the way (the highest red light) rich and fluctuated between that and the yellow on the rich side. So its definitely running rich. LOL.

Your oil line for your turbo is empting out so something with no restrictions. Its like blowing throw a straw, if its open you will blow right throw but if u put your finger on halfway then you get pressure. Since the line is right by the sensor its reading pressure with no restriction. I would sqeeze the line and see if it does it because it will create restriction. BTW stock oil sensors suck
