When doing my rebuild, will a new oil pump be necessary? In all my experiance with the 420A, i've never heard of a single oil pump failure. Thoughts? How much does a new oil pump go for? What aftermarket pumps are availible, and what advantages do they offer over stock? Better safe than sorry, true, But if the original pump is reusable, is it worth it?

I'm getting the machine work and assembly done for free through a family connection (not The Family, either) so that is not an issue, but i have been quoted $1885 labor to R&R my motor, i take the shortblock for dissasembly, machining and reassembly, they reassemble with my spare tranny and clutch. I'm sort of stuck with that, as my car isn't driveable (cracked piston, 440's and my SAFC stolen, almost out of the bodyshop now) and i can't afford to have it towed elsewhere.

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

What else will i need for the assembly? i've got pistons/rods/rings, clevite 77 .010 under main and rod bearings, perhaps a new oil pump. What misc seals, pieces, odds and ends am i missing? What can i not do this without that i don't have?

Anything those off you who have gone before me can offer is appreciated.

i remember guys saying to "o-ring" the block. Maybe you can send the STAR mani out to get ported and heat coated:) coat the pistons and rods to. Hell, i don't know just throwing ideas at ya. Good luck with the rebuild man.

In my opinion replace everything that you can afford to while the engine is out. If you replace as much as you can it will be more of a "New" engine all around. And you will have that much less to worry about in the future.

I to have never seen or heard of oil pump failure. But like I said above you should just put a new one on anyway, just to be safe. Im sure you can still use the old one w/ no problems as well.

I am headed down you road coming up soon. I am going to build a new engine for High boost levels. I havent put my turbo on yet but I thought I should just go ahead and start a block, incase I blow the stock engine I will hopefully already have a new one near completion (knock on wood)(no blown engines)

What I am doing is just paying someone to machine it and rebuild it. I am going to put the block in myself. I have talked to a couple of guys who have done this and they say it is not as hard as it seems. And they say that if I have the engine all ready to go in the install time is not bad. If I do this I will save mad cash on labor which is a good thing. This is just what I am doing, you may not have the time or desire to try and install it yourself. I just figure I mine as well learn now, rather than later.

all your gaskets. Satan has a complete gasket kit for like 150. it comes w/ valve gasket, head gasket, exost gasket -- shit like that. Thats all I can think of.

What kind of pistons/rods/rings did you get? Did you get the howell rebuild kit? If so how long did it take to get to you and are they ok looking???

I got quoted for 2550 for machining and r&r.The good thing is they gave me all the gaskets w/ it and their kit came w/ a new oil pump too.I'd replace it too.I did get a new water pump and timing belt put in for peace of mind.Damn,440's and safc stolen?I wouldv'e thrown a tantrum....goin DFI then?BTW,don't know if you might like the idea of lighter valves(300 for 16 I think) and all the new spring and retainers.I went ahead and knifed the crank,but the guy told me they couldn't go too far cause it might break in high RPM's(is he b.s'n me or what?)

What are your thoughts on this subject? I'd love some input.

No Bill hear but why not. How much can an oil pump cost? I'm pretty sure they didn't go thru the trouble of ordering one for my engine but who knows. Everything in my engine is oem except the pistons and rings. rods got some attention but stock no less. Has held up exstrodinarily well. Going on 45K miles and nearing the two yr mark.
