I have a Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 98 and I wanna go Turbo. I wanted to swap the 420a for a 4g63 but peeps always tell me that it is a bad idea. I'll go with the 420a Turbo then. I need experienced DSMers help on what mods need to be done to push some good power (300HP+). I'll rebuild the engine from A to Z so, what should I do? First of all, do I need to strengthen the block? If yes, what do you suggest?I'll come back with more questions later. Thx a lot!!

we are not going to spoon feed this to you. you NEED to search this forum EXTENSIVELY. there is an answer to every concievable question you can come up with regarding turboing the 420a. You NEED to study, read, research and teach yourself about this subject. you cannont simply "put a turbo on" without knowing some very fundimental information, all of which is in here if you look for it.
Get this book: "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell.

go read, and then if you have questions we will be more than happy to help you. and never EVER mention "swapping a 4g63 for a 420a" again on this sight, for that will equal certain death!

Get rid of the stock pistons, rings and con rod. And replace them w/ JE's and Eagle. Also bearings a new oil pump, water. Basically everything in the front of the motor. You may need to get the master gasket set from Chrysler, not Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi dealers will break your bank. One advice from experience is, don't go cheap, trust me, it's worth in the end. You'll also need a better clutch and you mind as well rebuild your transmission while you're at it. Don't rush this, you'll regret that in the end when nothing will go as you wish. Good luck.

what do you mean by strengthening the block.

forged internals will stregnthen the bottom end if thats what you mean.

Dude, I mean I'll search for it and if i don"t understand what i found, I'll ask it here... Of course I'll search first... :)

Just send your block to your local machine shop. Shop around because everone has different prices on different work that needs to be done.

I'm also confused about what is being said about strengthening the block. We have an iron block and a bed plate, I don't think it's going to flex. Just replace everything in the bottom end, that's all.

To get you started, most people here choose Turbo kit, then when she blows rebuild the internals. The rings usually go first, and dont push more then ~8psi (~200whp).

Rebuild (built motor) and turbo? People usually choose pistons, rods then and everything to put her back together (timing belt shit). Your going to want to drop the compressiong for boost.
doing this will give your motor that ability to take whatever you you could learn to push

When you are looking for a turbo kit. Look for an hrc or star turbo kit. Study the parts... learn what they do and how they work.

Now go study on that information.

^ That would be the best route for a Beginner. Call Hahn and look into a Stage 2 turbo kit. Bill will answer all your questions and help you achieve your goals.

Don't wait till it blows to rebuild the bottom end, why take the chance and do that to your baby.. You can always blow more than just your "rings" and end up being in a worse situation.

I'm startin' to shop for a Turbo. I don't feel like bying a kit because I wanna rebuild the motor... My goal is 300HP so I'm now gathering infos on how to choose the good Turbo size, injectors size, fuel pump size, intercooler, etc... I'll search for it and if I can't get no answers, I'll ask you guys... Thx!!!

you can buy a turbo kit AND rebuild your motor ya know.. seriously, hahn stage 2 will do you right: http://hahnracecraft.com/auto/eclipse/eclipse.htm

and also look for some pistons and rods (8.8:1 JE pistons and Eagle rods are probably the most popular). go to a machinest and have them bore your block over .020.

injectors are really up to your goal.

these are just opinions, you have your own mind.

Read more and research.... you'll see that the turbo kits have nothing to do with rebuilding the bottom end. That's if you do stage 2. Stage 3 Hahn is the same but they just give you the parts for the rebuild instead of you piecing it together.
