I had my setup now for about a month, so Im still learning things. Im worried about compressor surge because my HKS SSQ flutters bad. Now Ive read that some people say you can adjust with the back screw, then other people say, it has no purpose. That doesnt make since. I swear my car gobbles so damn much, Im gonna get shot by a turkey hunter. I have also heard things can be fixed by taking the spring out or cutting it down. Which way should I start turning the screw, to start messn with it? Its about 3/4 of the way in right now.

Also, this is no big deal to me but, I had some people tell me that since my car wont blow off when Im in nuetral, there is something wrong. Now its my understanding that this will only happen when the car is under load. Should I be hearing something when reving in nuetral?

if you want the gobbling to go away remove the Mercedes emblem part in the front of the bov. It will also become louder.

So what your saying is, I dont have to worry about compressor surge? Im not even really worried too much about the sound. I just dont want to ruin the turbo.

What about the whole blowing off in nuetral? Is that something I should be conserned about or is it normal?

If it's 3/4 of the way in, start backing it one or two turns at a time until it either falls out or gets better.

Deep down I think I already know that answer but, you guys have been turbo's longer than I have.

Nah, not bad.. it'll move air, but not enough to hear. Try it, rev it under the hood with your hand in front of it. You'll feel it.

DJ i understand your concern however i dont think it is something you need to worry that much about. I have the same BOV and the screw is to determin how easily the smaller valve opens in relation to the larger valve. loosen the bolt slowly to you get the pitch you like, and also keep in mind you dont want the valve to leak so watch your guage. Mine is 3/4 in if that means anythign to you and i dont hve a proble with sure at all. Reving the engine in neutral doesnt release loud like a 4g63 motor.

So I took out the insert today and I backed the screw out till it fell out, one turn at a time. Is this something Im gonna have to live with unless I get another BOV. Could it be because of my IC piping size? Im running 2.5", I dont think its to big.

Also, I am supposed to leave the vac opening on the top of my Tial open, right?

yes vac will remain open unless you run it liek a delta gate. Shouldnt need to, only applies to towing and load according to the instructions. You are still not happy with the sound without the diffuser huh (mercedes emblem). Unfortunatly then i am affraid you are stuck with it unless you go with another. Mine really doesnt flutter much at all but i have 2" piping. may or may not make a difference.

Well this time I took the spring out and cut a little off. Just so there wasnt as much tension. It actually does sound alot better, but Im still being a bit retentive about it. I went to Lowes tonite and found a spring that isnt as stiff. Im gonna try it out tomorrow.

Throwing my $.02 worth in too...

I too am still learning a lot. I've had mine running for just over a month now and found out that fluttering noise was the compressor surging. I spoke with a couple people that suggested the most stupidest things. Then I was thinking about the vac lines that were hooked up... I had the same vac line from my BOV and FPR on the same line. Because the pressure is being released in the same line as the fpr, wouldnt it make sense that would be why it goes really lean and makes that weird noise? So I went ahead and played with the vac lines in 9* weather in a shopping plaza. Now that my BOV and FPR are on separate vac lines, I've heard no fluttering noises. I have a few other issues, that that fixed the compressor surge.

If you still get that fluttering noise, give that a try. :)

Well I put in that lighter spring I got from Lowe's and OMG did it make difference. I know it isnt my vac lines cuz the other day I pulled off the intake mani and drilled 4 new holes for the turbo components. I also made a straight pipe today and that made a nice differnce. Then last I set my cam gears at +2 on the intake and -2 on the exhaust. That made a big difference aswell.


I just have one more question. How do you test the BOV to see if its too loose and it leaks? Do you just hold your hand in the front and feel if anything is coming out the front or is there another way?

hold your hand in front and rev the motor. If air comes through then it's leaking but ........

C'mon now... I told you that would make a diff with your cam gears didn't I... ;)

Don't worry about weird little things right now, we'll sort them out if you have any when you come cisit me... ;)

Pardon me if im stating the obvious....but you have a super sequential BOV correct? isnt the purpose of this BOV to give you that "turkey gobble" sound? i had one on my first Supra, a SS BOV, and it gobbled like it was thanksgiving and it was being shot at.And its perfectly normal for a larger turbo, especially on a 4-cyl car, to not "blow off" in neutral. it generally needs a load placed on it. all the GST's and other factory turbo cars you hear BOVing in neutral have tiny turbos that spool very easily.
