80500, is this safe?
Posted by eclipsestyle97, Dec-16-04 03:20 AM
ok, well i just got done installing my custom turbo setup two days ago (big headache) and now im not getting enough fuel pressure at idle or when i drive. i think my sfmu shit the bed. whenever i crank the screw on top in or out the fuel pressure reads about 22-25 psi. no matter how far in or out it is. i then took the sfmu out so my pump was just feeding into the return line and my fuel pressure was still 22-25 psi. not good considering im trying to get a 50 psi idle cause im still on stock injectors. anyway since i need my car cause of work and everything, i was wondering if this would be safe? my friend let me borrow his obx fuel pressure regulator. i was going to install this in place of the sfmu and then take the wastgate actuator off of the swing valve assembly so it wouldnt create boost. this setup would only be temporary until i can get a new sfmu or send it back to vortech for them to check out the problem. would this be bad to drive it around like that?
while im posting what do some of you guys have wrapped around your radiator hose for insulation? where can i get some? thanks

i thought you needed less than 50 psi idle. and rise to 60 at 0 vac.

i have no idea what your problem could be with your sfmu. i have never had any problems with mine.

there is no problem that i'm aware of drving around with your wategate not hooked up. i do it when i feel like not boosting. long trips and such. i would think the extra flow of exhaust would improve gas milage some.

just get some stuff from thermo tec for your radiator hose and zip tie it on.

good luck!

oh boy.

I don't think I would run my car without an FPR of some sort...they came from the factory with one. 1:1 I believe. Speeking of wich did you disable the stock one?

SFMU first of all...which spring are you using...you might need the longer one. Check the boost port and bleed port and make sure the screws are bottomed out. Check you vac line make sure the sfmu getting a good signal. Check those things and report back :thumbsup

i screwed around with my car for a while today and i got my fuel pressure up to about 37-40ish. but at the same time my fuel pressure gauge bounces like crazy from 25-37/40. i have a 97 so i set up my fuel lines like corbins write up. did everything like the instructions-lol. the screw is down about as far as it can go w/out bottoming it out. as for the spring, i have the silver one. i dont have any other ones to compare it to cause i bought it used and thats the only one that it came with. if i take the screw the whole way out my idle pressure drops to about 20 and it doesnt bounce around. i think i may need the other spring thats supposed to come with the sfmu. anyone want to sell me one and have it overnighted to me??? even though the fuel pressure is still low, i took it for a drive around my block. it runs smooth for daily driving but when i come to a stop the engine wants to die. fuel starvation maybe? im not to sure what to do. btw im being serious about buying the other spring if anyone has one.

oh yeah, and all the ports are screwed the whole way in and the vacume line is #4 hose i believe.

I believe corbins write up's center around the 95 fuel system. Did you disable the stock regulator in the rear wheel well? Also you do not want to run 50psi of fuel at idle. you need to be lower than that.

well whoevers write up it was, it was for a 96+ car. from what i read and understand i should have between 47-50 psi idle fuel pressure on stock injectors with the 6:1 disk in. i have a bigger problem now anyway...i got oil coming out the compressor side of my turbo. :shrug

Shouldn't the disc for stock injectors be 12:1 :shrug
When looking up FMU I read that using 12:1 is used for stock injectors. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I need to know this as well for when I get my SFMU and start installing my turbo kit.

The stock FPR is always at ~45 psi regardless of the manifold pressure. The stock ECU will generally adjust the fuel trims properly if you use a 1:1 so that's fine, put the 1:1 in and make sure you don't boost. Verify your fuel pressure gauge is functional. Try pinching the return line or something, you should see excessive pressure. Make sure the diaphram in the sfmu is not ripped, not dirty and that the fastners on the Sfmu are torqued to the exact spec found in the manual.

I think your porblem is the spring. try using the Darker and shorter spring. Oh and for Stock injectors, try the 3.65 disk.

i already posted that i do not have the darker spring. i bought the sfmu used and it only came with the long silver one. i have the 6:1 disk in the sfmu, the largest one. i cleaned out everything in the top of the sfmu and when i take the vaccume line off the sfmu my fuel pressure is 47 psi, then when i put the vac line back on it drops about 10 psi. im no longer using my friends fuel pressure regulator in place of the sfmu since i got the fuel pressure up from 22. but i still left the wastegate actuator off the swing valve so i wont boost. i dont have any CELs at the moment but whenever i drive my car and i come to a stop it shuts off. i cleaned out the missing link but that didnt help too much. i looked at my spark plugs and they all have a heavy black carbon build up and cylinders 2,3,4 have a little oil. all my vacumme lines are good except on the missing link there is a pin hole on the side of it thats creating a leak. call me dumb but is that supposed to be plugged up or is it supposed to be open like that? please get back to me and give me ideas as to what else to try. thanks

Try rebuilding the S-FMU, the spring/disc might not be ligned up right.

ok you have the static set correctly but with vac reference you get 10psi. your vac screw is not adjusted correctly. turn the screw all the way in you should get to 40psi. I never got my sfmu higher than 40psi with vac signal. you will need the darker spring so try to order that from vortech.

The largest disk which measures 3.62" is 12:1 not 6:1.

haha sorry i stated that wrong. when the vac line is off im at 47 psi, but when i put the vac line back on it drops 10 psi from 47. so im at 37 psi at idle-lol. my bad. i tried calling vortech last night but i think it was too late. any ideas as to what could be causing my car to shut off when i come to a stop from driving???

make sure the PCV is not clogged..that can do it. 37 psi is pretty close to what i had max on mine (41psi if i recall).
