798, There's awfully a lot of blown engines...

Why are there so many broken engines? What's the cause of this? Improper fuel supply resulting in detonation? I want to prevent this...I'm gonna run be running at ~5 psi, so I hope that's safe...

As long as the engine is in good running condition and all maintenance is kept up and boost is controlled the motor shouldnt not blow. Unless its running lean =o) So, more than likely its accidental human error.

You're right Saber, 99 times out of a hundred it's caused by human error, i.e. running too lean and not noticing 'til it's too late and turning the boost too high inadvertantly...

I have been with the board for almost 2 years and while there have been a few blown motors, more times than not the owners attribute the blown motor to something they did (or more accurately something they DIDN'T do), not the turbo kits themselves, nor the 420A motor. The motor is a hell of a motor and I am proud to have one under my hood...

I just would hate for people who desire the extra ponies to be turned off from the idea of getting a turbo kit due to misconceptions on this or other boards. The best way to make sure you are making the right decision about boostin' is to do your homework and talking to those who have more knowledge than yourself. And always take what people who have only opinions and NO experience say with a grain of salt.

Thanks for lettin' me spend my 2 cents...LOL...

LAST EDITED ON 07-Jan-01 AT 00:08 AM (PST)

Had a vacuum leak on mine..caused me to run lean during boost. Of course, still racing when it was like this didn't help...doh! Before I diagnosed the problem though, the damage was already done. But I figure look on the bright side, racing season had already ended so I wasn't missing anything. And I've always planned on building up the bottom end anyway, this just gave me an incentive to do it earlier. All be it, an expensive incentive :)

Well, I use my car as dialy driver too, so can't really afford the time or money for rebuild just yet...

I blew mine the same way wyatt did...boosting to infinity. But that's because my boost controller fell apart and was leaking boost so that the wastegate didn't see boost and never opened. I saw my boost gauge reach just past 18psi on the third run in 3rd gear when the ring lands on my pistons gave way due to heat. It didn't detonate..I had plenty of fuel ..it just got too hot and the stock pistons couldn't handle it.

Here's what i recommend :

Boost gauage
Air/Fuel meter
EGT Gauge (exhaust gas temp)
Fuel pressure guage
Apex SuperAFC or equivelent (nice to have)
J&S Ultra Safegaud (Timing computer / knock sensor)
Upgraded injectors (nice to have for higher boost)

With all the listed items the 420a block should withstand a
pretty good amount of boost even on stock internals.
I myself am currently working towards this setup. Im just short an AFC and the Safeguard.
And finally just a word of caution... I cant stress this enough, The FMU's we use were designed for no more than 9psi, unless you have the SuperFMU (adjustable). ~Because of dangerously high fuel pressures which can lead to injector lock up. + I would not want to depend on an FMU boosting 15psi...

Just my $0.02 !

How do you use the J&S safeguard?

Are you running larger injectors now?

smart very smart i just have one ? for you how much bigger injectors are you talking about here? make also if you dont mind

This web page should give you enough info about the J&S Safeguard.!!

As for the injectors.. Im running 310cc RC engineering injectors.

Hey Martin,

So do you already have the 310cc injectors in and running? (without an AFC or anything?) I've heard you don't need any cpu help with that level of injectors, and I just wanted a verification. What's your fuel pressures then? (idle and boosted?)

Thanks a lot man!

Yeh 320cc is the largest you can go with our Stock ECU..
As for the fuel pressure you can keep it stock because you ECU is still able to take care of the larger injectors..

811, idle fuel pressure with 310 cc injectors?
Posted by JasonESi_T, Jan-15-01 01:23 PM
I see...
So you just set it at 47 psi of fuel pressure and let it go?

I would think with the larger injectors, you need to set it to a lower fuel pressure because it would take less pressure from 310cc injectors to equate the 47 psi from 230cc injectors?

Thanks again.

Yeah, you would have to turn down the base fuel pressure which is a very easy thing. On my injectors, I idle at 35psi.

813, safeguard

The safeguard thing seems pretty good. How is it hooked up to our cars? How does it know which cylinders needed retarded anyhow if there are no external sensors to hook up??
