79311, thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by siueclipse, Nov-15-04 04:37 AM
Well, Ive been sponsored and Ive been thinking of using some of the sponsorship money to build a high compression motor. Maybe like 12.5 or something. Any comments on this?

Who is your sponsor?

No need to get touchy about it I was just asking of this sponsor had a name. Your car does not exactly come off show quality and we all know the horsepower and times you run. Most sponsors usually want some decent results in either category before they go handing out money. That's why I was surprised to see anyone who would be willing to invest money on a car that is unestablished.

79317, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by siueclipse, Nov-15-04 05:38 AM
I wasnt being touchy about it. I simply said don't worry about it. I should have never mentioned anything about it. The reason why Im not going to say is because its going to lead into a long drawn out BS thread of everyone doubting it, exactly how you are.
Back on topic, anyone have comments about building a high comp motor?
|
79318, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by Mattchew, Nov-15-04 05:43 AM
Your right, you should not have mentioned it if you didn't want people to ask about it. It sounded more like bragging than a question. I'm not doubting you have one but like I said, I'm curious to know who would be willing to front money on a car that is not established in the 1/4 mile.
Back to your topic. What exactly do you expect to gain from upping your compression that high? I mean what is the logic behind the question?

ya, higher hp numbers, and more likly your gonnas fuck something up.
|
79323, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by ner947, Nov-15-04 06:41 AM
12.5:1 is a very high compression ratio. Building an engine with a compression ratio this high would be somewhat tricky, on a normally asperated setup. I wouldn't try it unless you or whoever is tuning the car has a good understanding of ignition maps. I'm willing to bet that the stock timing curve wouldn't work with a compression ratio that high. Something like a full standalone or a MS&EDIS would be a must for a setup like that.
Are you thinking about using 12.5:1 pistons with boost?
|
79324, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by DarkOne, Nov-15-04 06:45 AM
12.5:1 pistons, methanol.. lots of boost.. heh Sweet.
|
79326, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by siueclipse, Nov-15-04 07:03 AM
yes with boost. i know it would be very tricky to do, however, wouldn't higher whp numbers come out because of it?
|
79334, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by dsmtuner, Nov-15-04 11:05 AM
congrats on the sponsorship. that crazy to run 12.5 on boost but if you want to try good luck. what about building your whole engine out of aluminum. don't know how much your hp #'s would go up but your torque would be through the roof.

Are you refering to the 3.0 that was proposed like a year ago?

i say do it....

79337, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by Chamuko, Nov-15-04 11:31 AM
not worth it IMO.
|
79338, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by er0ckz, Nov-15-04 11:32 AM
that would be a risky thing to do. did you ever think of getting a bigger turbo to meet your HP goals?

that or rebuild the whole bottom end out of aluminum, crank, rods, pistons. when i was talking to the machine shop that tried to make me a crankshaft for my car they were telling my that if i did it all aluminum it would really increase torque because it would be so light. but it wouldn't be very streetable. plus it would have so much torque i would have a problem with it blowing stuff like rods or the clutch, but if you've got a sponsor paying for it then you could do it. on a side note, when my engine is done were hoping it to be somewhere around 2.9L.

79341, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by Kirby, Nov-15-04 11:44 AM
Sure you would be able to get higher HP #'s... However your chances of blowing it the hell up would increase at a rate exponentially higher than your boost numbers... So if this is the road you plan to take you better study very very very hard on tuning and it might not hurt to buy a dyno either...lol But you will have to find different means of engine management though cause a piggy back would not work at all for this goal....

One word: Methanol.

One word: Methanol. I'm hearing you on the methanol Dino... being as I have never worked with the stuff I'm not sure exactly how that works, but I am assuming that running that with the portfuler as your only management source would still be a bad idea right? Even with Methanol won't he be tuning right at the edge of the envelope here?? Or will the methanol make the octane so high that det. is not even on the radar???

79350, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by Avenger, Nov-15-04 01:54 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't even leave methanol in the tank for long periods of time and you have to get lines that are approved to run methanol to even run it at the track.
Anyway, unless you are making a full out drag car, why bother. Run ~11.0:1 and just run 110 leaded all the time. I still don't see the point. Sure you'll make more power (about 4% per point of compression) but the tuning nightmare it would be ... ouch. You'd need a standalone (no more PF), and lots of money in tuning time.
Personally, the money would be better invested in a full standalone engine management system. You'd probably find alot of untapped potential with that alone.

79361, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by etx, Nov-16-04 04:09 AM
If I ever blow up this damn 2.0L I'll be building a 2.4L w/ at least 10:1 comp.
Fucking do it, but don't plan on driving the thing to the grocery store.
|
79364, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by turbo8u, Nov-16-04 05:25 AM
high compression turbo is definately a sick idea james, the old honda f1 cars had ridiculous turbo engines with ridiculous compression and they actually got booted they romped so hard.
two very important things to consider obviously are the increased in-cylinder temps, you'll be much more prone to pre ignition and detonation by introducing more heat in the combustion chamber, like dino said...methanol, or you can look into and setup a very effective water/alcohol injection system to keep the heat away.
obvious advantages of high comp turbo are more power at lower boost, faster spool up and holyshit would it sound MEAN!
i say do it, but be prepared for days upon days of wideband dyno tuning and setting up your own ignition tables, the stock ecu is definately not ready for a motor like this, MS w/EDIS all the way.

Metaljim is the only one i know planning on turboing a higher compression motor 10:5:1.

79367, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by ner947, Nov-16-04 07:47 AM
HadesOmega has high compression pistons with a STAR kit. James, if you decide to go with high compression pistons it might be helpful to hear what he has to say about the setup.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the blue wiper fluid contains methanol. I've heard of people ueing it because it comes with water too, so there won't be a need to pour it in your gas tank. Just use a water injection kit like the Aquamist thing. I'm I wrong here?

wiper fluid contains alcohol, it keeps it from not freezing.
in my opinion, spraying that shit into your engine is useless. if you're going to setup an aquamist kit, dont cheap out and use windshield fluid. just mix the denatured alcohol and water yourself.
|
79399, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by ForceFed420a, Nov-17-04 07:57 AM
I agree. Blue windshield washer fluid does contain methanol, both for cleaning and preventing it from freezing, but it's in such a low percent (I think like 5% or something) that it wouldn't be worth the effort. Also, I don't know how they get the coloring in there, but I don't know if I'd want whatever it is to be blowing up in my motor.
Just get denatured R-OH. There's a ton of guys on turbododge.com who run that. Not sure if they run high compression, but you could get some good ideas on simple set-ups that control detonation.

You haven't even maxed out our current set-up. Why would you try going high comp? I just don't get it I guess...

79439, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by Ryan_Hes, Nov-17-04 09:55 PM
I know you don't wanna hear it, but what is SO hard about telling who your sponsor is. If they told you not to let anyone know...thats one thing - even though it goes against what a sponsorship really stands for...getting their name to co-exist with your car...
|
79445, RE: thinking of building a high compression motor Posted by siueclipse, Nov-18-04 03:44 AM
the only reason why i shouldn't have said anything is because you wont believe who the sponsor is and it would turn into a big debate. I might as well say.. its Sport Compact

Not to be gay..But sport compact is a joke...Really, its a scam..First of all you have to pay this bogus 75 $ bux...WTF?Sadly, I fell for it, and my stupid ass paid the 75 bux... Not thinking to my self, why the hell am I giving THEM money? They are supposed to be giving me money. I still have my application here on my desk, from 5165 W wood mill DR. Suite #12, Wilmington, DE 19808. Anyways, they sponsor ANYONE. I had 6 of my friend’s try, 3 of which have sick cars, the others which are beaters. THEY ALL “Got Sponsored”. It was bullshit... Thank god I never signed this application. .. IF you read the fine print, they say shit like if you don’t get 5 new people to sign up, then we will make you pay for all of the stuff we hook you up with…The most you get out of this deal, its parts at “wholesale cost”. When I did some research, it was about a total of 10% off what I normally could get it for. It’s a fucking joke. I wouldn’t suggest sighing up with these guys…ANYONE gets sponsored, that in its self defeats the purpose. ---------------------------------------

Well. I didn't have to pay any money, nor did I have seek out them. They found me.

If I were you, I keep your bottom end and increase the CFM.
If you're dead set on not keeping low comp, 10.5 would be alot better. Propane injection would fix most of your detonation problems and you could spool something rather larger with ease. Goodluck.

Go for it! Thats what a lot of the race teams use so with proper tuning you could boost on street gas with low boost and crank it up on race gas for some quick spooling fun!

You have a lot of potential with your current setup as it is, but if you do want higher compression, which is good :) I would look into the methanol thing.

Stroker? Stroker + 12.5 Compression? Stroker + 12.5 Compression + turbo?
I just want to see someone do it, step up, it sounds like you have the funds for it. But if not the stroker, then Im all for the high comp. Im interested to see what numbers you'll run.

AWESOME geting sponsored helps a lot.....
I got a partial sponsorship on My trans work and its going great thanks to it (well i have been friends witht his shop for a while now)
and well ......could someone plz explain to him that methanol is good....BUT there are several issues you got to deal with
I just keep hearing the same thing methanol methanol....first off i might be wrong but we had a discussion about this on the h20 (which for some reason wont come up so i can search :( ) forums and well i think we agreed that diferent fuel injectors would be nescesary, some injectors that are 100% alky compatible (not all injectors will survive several cycles of alky use) since you are sponsored geting extra injectors wont be that bad, and a full stainless fuel system... pluss you gota flush some gasoline through the line after you run the car, and are going to park/tow...due to the corrosion effect of alky....o rings might deteriorate faster...dont know if this is correct
Ohh yah when you run Methanol expect to use 2X (i think, dont quote me investigate,) the flow of fuel per HP...so a huge fuel pump (no punny in tank pump here...get an Aeromotive 450+ fuel pump, or a king sumo BG pump...)
Err am i forgeting something??

Ya, Dry sump oil system would be nice at that point. Methanol needs higher pressure/temps to burn properly but it also burns slower. That means your oil isn't going to like living in your crank case. Changing the oil after a couple runs will become necessary.
Just push your current set-up or go 2.4L BANME!
