79173, Question About Your Happiness With Current Turbo Setup
Posted by EclipseTenzoR, Nov-11-04 03:09 AM
I thought I'd ask a question that I'm sure alot of people non-turbo would be interested to know. Because of the specifics of this question I figured it would be hard to search. Here it goes..

-Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63
-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
-Are you happy that you did?
-What are the regrets?
-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)

I never thought about selling my 420a before i had a turbo on it. I had friends that were 4g63's and they told me to sell it, but I liked being different than them. I turboed mine for stupid reasons. I wanted to do something different. Something you don't see very often. A motor that was never designed or intended to be 300 or 400whp but can do it is a cool thing in my mind. Im happy with my car. I wish I could drive it more on an every day basis, but when I do drive it. Its a great time. I do regret some of the money I have spent on this car. I have spent a lot of money, probably too much for any sane person. I wish I would have done things a little differently when building it up. My main reason for thinking the 420a is better... well.. again, you don't see it every day. There are several 4g63's over 300whp. Big deal, you rarly see a 420a over 300whp and thats more significant to me. It means more.

This is a cool thread...

Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63
Humm once last year. But, I am in school, so my parents support me, and buying a turbo car would shoot the insurance through that roof. EVen right now, I have the highest insurance in my family!!! But we have full coverage.

What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
My car is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.... I was used to driving a V6 (2000) Pontiac Grandam, and everytime I turned the AC on, I was horribly disappointed. Started with bolt-ons which promised 10hp for each one, and let's just say they were totally not worth it. So I took the plunge and got a turbo, and all it's accessories.

Are you happy that you did?
Yest because I got a really cool hobby, and I love wrenching on the car, solving its issues without running to a mechanic. Sorta like a big F-U to them. It was funny, I was trying to get our former families mechanic to work on it. My dad asked them if he could install it, and he just kept saying, yes yes. So when I bought my kit to him, he back-peddled, cause he never really realized what my dad was saying. Now I am comfortable with working on my car, and aren't affraid to tackle it's issues.

What are the regrets?
Yest, my bank account. All in all, my car has cost me upwards of 5000 dollars.

Still pretty slow with my current 5 psi wastegate, but I've kept my realiability :) which is more of what I can say for other modded 4g63, and the few 420 eclipses running into high boost numbers (with a few exceptions). I think if you keep your boost low, then realiability won't be an issue (but then again, you sacrifice speed).

What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)
Lower insurance, learned to work on a car, great hobby, etc...

Conclusion:
If you wanna race your car for the least amount of money (AND that is your only reason for turboing your eclipse), which sounds like that's your reason, I would totally recomment getting a faster car out of the factory. Not neccessarily a eclipse 4g63 either. I for one can't wait to buy a 350z or g35 coupe, both either supercharged or turbocharged later :P Actually, all of my future cars will be turbo charged. Or, for the sake of practicality, a an Evo 8 (4 door). I'm still keeping the eclipse though!!! Hell, it's paid off, it's been very good to me, and I'm too attached to my baby.

Sell the 420a....yes but the constant need to fix every week was a problem. (all the people i know have to fix thiers often)

Why turbo.....forced induction is an effective way to increase power and its fun to do. Getting the 420a into times lower the 12's is a challenge, 4g is way to easy any idiot can do it.

The 420a better.....more reliable platform hands down. my 420a hardly ever needs work when maintained.

-Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63
Never wanted to sell my car. Mainly because I started to work on the exterior styling & stuff. Once I was where I wanted to be with that, why would I sell it.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
Power mainly! It seems to me that when you get the "bug" to work on your car, you never are satisfied. Once my exterior was done, logically I needed to do engine work. Plus every time that I went to a car show, people would be like, "Hey... something's missing! there's no turbo!", that kinda got old. But now I can say to those guys, "Hey, there's something missing! There's no FMIC!"

-Are you happy that you did?
2 words. HELL YEAH!

-What are the regrets?
None. I knew when I started that it was going to cost money to get the car I wanted. I've got about $12,000 into my car so far overall. If you think that you can get performance, real performance cheap, you're wrong.

-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)
To shut the guys up at the car shows! To tell you the truth though, my car has NEVER felt tighter, faster, and overall dialed in as it does right now. I still need to adjust some things, but my overall feeling about the cars performance, looks, etc. is awesome. The turbo kits bring the car up to where it should be, fast. Eclipses have always been easy on the eyes, but when you tried to show any kind of performance you'd always fall on your face. Most of the shows that I attend are full of 4G63's that are stock looking inside & out. To have a 420A that's got a turbo kit on it that nobody else has makes your car an interesting conversation.

Fuck no...The 4g63 can blow me. I like my crank right where it is.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
because the 420a is slow as fuck non-turbo. It was killing me, i lost to a fucking Honda element when i was nonturbo...with my chick in the car...now that shit is just sad. And turbo is the shit, i always wanted to turbo it from the first day i got it

-Are you happy that you did?
Well, yes and no. When your turbo a 420a, you got to understand, once a week you WILL be fixing SOMTHING...Sometimes it stresses me out. Some 420a’s break more then others. As you move on down the 420a turbo road, you will learn how to promptly fix most of your problems, because how many damn times the shit breaks. Its drains my money, but in the end, when im blowing my exhaust on a cobra its more then worth it.

-What are the regrets?
^ Above..

-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)
obviously insurance issues. Way better rates. Gear ratio’s suck ass. And its cool having a turbo /non turbo.

I love my eclipse. Sometimes when driving it I think to myself I would be happy with just it and mabye I shouldn't have even got the 350z. I love the Z but I really like my eclipse too.

As far as the 4g63 thing goes, I had a 1g talon. Let's just say I will never own another 4g63 car, ever. Mabye something newer like the evo, the new 4g63 in there looks great but only time will tell. Motor's a motor, whatever.

I'm really suprised in the way this thread has moved. I figured that most of the people who would reply would have more regret much like myself. I am non-turbo for the moment but I always get a power bug when ever I drive any of my friends car or my mothers car. I need some power but for the moment I think I'll do up my looks then go for the turbo. I wanna put so much work into this cosmetically with rims, and suspensio mods, and interior that at time I feel skeptical. It's like yes I want to put all this money into looks and stuff, but what if down the road I'm not satisfied and say gee.. I wish I would have saved and bought a GST or GSX and then dont cosmetic stuff to that. If I knew people in my area that were boosted 420A's I would have more confidence in adding power to my car later down the road. This is where I stand mainly.

Well I shouldn't jump in as I am not turbo...YET! I bought my RS stirctly knowing it would be slow and would require a lot of work to make it fast. My take on it though is this.

In order to boost it, I have to build it. Well if I build it, I know everythign about it. When I start, I gfigure it will take years to get it done and thats okay with me. I want it right. now I'm planning a race car, jsut a real fast street car that can whip damn near anything, mainly my girls 78 Trans Am. Thats the fun part to me. Now when I see GS-T's that are dope as fuck it does get discouraging. However, its al lbolt ons baby. The wing, the skirts, the wheels, brakes and suspension can all be bolted on to be jsut as good as a GS-T. No Crankwalk and equally as fast IMO. So I know it wont be cheap and I paln to put $10K in my motor someday. but to me thats cool, the though of a 4 popper import that can beat a 350 V8 is sick. Everybosy around me has built a V8. I want to be different and still look good in the process.

I love my car. Yes I have had feelings where I wanted to get rid of her. But again, I put too much money and time into her, that i can't let her go. I thought about selling her and getting a GSX or GST but again, I love the feeling when I see my friends' faces when a GS just whoop'd their ass.

i'm glad i turboed my car. i love it, i want more power, and its been pretty reliable, ive had a few minor issues, but nothing major. i have thought about selling it and getting a GSX, but then again, my car is paid for, and i dont want to make more pmts. i'll just buy a 1g later on and keep this one as well. why not have the best of both worlds. but every time i have gone to the track, i get lots of attention, mainly because my car is a RS turbo, and people always ask questions. here in my area, its rare to find 420a's at the track, that are turbo, most of the eclipses are GSX's or GS-T's, so its great to be different.

and how can we forget the best quote of all directed to our cars: "id' rather walk the competion than my crank" --bill hahn

Last time I checked, neither of those places were located in Canada, so technically, to you, my Canadiastanian friend, they are an import. ;)

Granted, I'm not turbo yet, but there's no turning back now, so I'll give these a shot...

Question 1
-Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63?

Never. There are more than a few people on here who understand the love/hate relationship between Daisy and I. I've loved that car from the moment I saw it. I'll never get rid of it. (Although I did almost sell it to buy a 1972 Alfa Romeo Spider the first year.) :shrug

Question 2
-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?

I've done pretty much everything (within reason) to make the most power all motor on a daily driven, stock displacement 2GNT. It's cost an arm and a leg (and quite possibly a marriage too). In the end, the numbers aren't worthy of such sacrifice to me anymore. I plan on getting documentation of what those numbers turned out to be once she's broken in and 'squirted.

Question 3
-Are you happy that you did?

I have yet to receive any of my turbo components, but you better believe I'm happy to finally be giving in to boost fever.

Question 4
-What are the regrets?

None regarding the car itself.

Question 5
-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)

Typical. Lower insurance, repsect among my brothers and sisters in the 2GNT community, I get to keep my beloved Daisy and still be one of the fastest DSMs in town.

-Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63....no, due to financial reasons.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?....it's slow semi-stock.

-Are you happy that you did?....75% yes, 25% no

-What are the regrets?....I should have been more patient in choosing my fuel management setup. My DFI Gen6 is quite limited for the $$, but that was the best (only available) option at the time. Maybe I should have chosen another engine platform for the buildup, i.e., Supra TT (again, financial reasons:-( )

-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)....I have a built engine that allows me to run high boost now, and even higher boost with tuning.

More power

-Are you happy that you did?

Very

-What are the regrets?

None

Question #1: NO!!!
Question #2: After reading the true potencial of this engines, I felt confident. Now see the SRT-4, same base engine and making respectable power.
Question #3: Hell yeah!!!!!!!
Question #4: Getting a bigger turbo. I'm working on it now.
Question #5: Selling a Non-turbo car will be not enough to buy a turbo one. Unless you ca get a good deal.

I'm happy with my setup and everytime I run someone and tell them that is a 420a, not a 4G63; they always lift their eyebrows. Thanks a lot to 2gnt for all the information.

I'd buy a kit if I had to do it over again. Or atleast not bullshit around and buy all the good parts up front instead of paying twice for the same shit.

Crankwalk is over rated. I turbo'd my RS becuase it was my baby and I was going to do whatever it took to make her measurably (if that's a word) fast.

I like the challenge... and schmo can buy a turbo eclipse, do a couple hundred dollars of mods to it and call it fast. i like having to work hard, and be creative, and fab things to make my car fast, not buy my car fast. more satisfaction, and definatly will feel good when i get a 4g63 kill :evilgrin

I thought about it. I always wanted awd.

] -What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
When i found this site, and saw the numbers people were making. Oh yeah, and i was getting sick of people with the 4g63t talking so much shit about how crappy my motor was.

-Are you happy that you did?
I am very much happy with turboing my 420a.

-What are the regrets?
I wish i had built up the motor before putting on the turbo because now i have the turbo bug, i want to turn up the boost, but am limited due to stock internals. It sucks even worse when you have the fuel system and tuning capabilities too!! :bash

Well, i agree with the cheap insurance part, I also love the fact that anywhere i go * car shows, the track etc* people are always amazed at the fact that i have an rs-t. Theres not too many around here. Also, the great feeling i got when i got my first 4g63 kill!

Yes I thought about it, but I would of still bought another 2g. I would of been a GSX though.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
I wanted more power, and I already had an obsene amount of money and time invested in my car.

-Are you happy that you did?
Yes I am! VERY HAPPY!!!

-What are the regrets?
No, but the closest thing to a regret would be that my bottom end isn't built up, because I want to turn the boost up soo bad. Everyone says they will be fine with 7psi. After a little while you just want more.

-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63? (Other Than Crankwalk Issue)
The reason I gave above of the fact I had so much time and money invested in here already. I also so my car a lot and when people see a non turbo car being turbo'd you get a lot of questions and props. You meet a lot of people that have the same passion as you do. Being able to install the whole turbo system to learn more about how everything works as well as the knowledge to be able to work on it yourself.

Once, but that was before seeing this site and realizing that our motor can produce good numbers.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
Members rides and seeing HRC's car.

-Are you happy that you did?
Yes, will be even more happy when i dyno the car.

-What are the regrets?
None

Something different and it is fun. You learn so much about our motors when soing everything yourself instead of the 4G62 motors that you can take anywhere and someone can do whatever to it. Our motors are rarely seen turbo, so it does draw attention when you pop your hood and people see a 420-T rather than a 4G63T.

-Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63
Nope.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
I've never turbocharged/supercharged a car before and I've always wanted to. I like my cars fast and I took the whole N/A thing as far as I could...but I still wanted more power. Corbin's site and Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost" were inspiring. And the community of this site had alot to do with the final decision to go ahead and do it.

-Are you happy that you did?
Can I get a HELL YEAH!

-What are the regrets?
That I didn't do it more quickly.

-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63?
I learned a hell of alot throughout the whole process. Much more than I would have if I had bought a turbo car or even bought a kit. A wierd personal bonus was that I set myself up with a welding rig to do all the piping, which is something I've always wanted in the workshop. Honestly, the thought never actually crossed my mind to buy a turbo model. For me it was more about doing what I could with a car that I already owned and loved.

This is a great thread, not sure why its not sticky yet. I am in the process of building my custom kit and hopefully will have it done and installed by November. BTW Maximum Boost by Corky Bell, mentioned above, will help out huge to those building custom turbos and to those who want to understand how they work better.

-Have you ever thought about selling your 420A before you had turbo to buy a 4G63
Negative.

-What Influenced you to turbo the 420A?
I hope to do car performance for my career. The 420a is a great motor to learn on. It's slow without some serious help :)

-Are you happy that you did?
I do believe it was the happiest day of my life :)

-What are the regrets?
That I didn't do it *before* I spent tons of money on all the little support stuff.

-What reasons do you think it was better that you did turbo the 420A then sell your car for the 4G63?
The car that I fell in love with has a 420a not a 4g63. Anyone can buy bolt on replacement turbos & parts, and not even know how they work. If you want to have a challenge and love to learn the 420a is perfect.
