79099, High EGT and other issues Posted by PiKapp504, Nov-09-04 01:44 AM
Ok, well, I've got this little issue and it's REALLY starting to bug me. I'm running a S16G w/ GReddy FMIC. I'm still using the Cartech (no flaming please. It's tuned pretty good and I'm building my 8-injector setup) and I've got 30lb. injectors. At idle she's pulling about 15-16in./Hg and I'm getting about 22-25psi of fuel. Pretty much right on. I'm running 7-8psi of boost right now and my fuel is right around 70-80psi under full boost (yes, I know, it's a bit rich). Anyway, when cruising around @ 65-75mph, my EGT's are sitting at like 1400-1450. If I go WOT in 3rd or 4th, my EGT's won't go about 1550 @ redline. Also, if I go partial throttle, the EGT's SKYROCKET and it seems like my ECU isn't going into open loop mode. Now, I think my issue with the high EGT's could be that I'm still running stock exhaust (except for an aftermarket muffler) and my stock , OE cat that's got over 142K miles on it. I also noticed that my A/F meter (digital, the one corbin used to make) is reading negative numbers and just basically not working at all. I don't think I've got a bad O2 because I'd get a CEL, right? Anyway, some input would be nice cuz I wanan fix this ASAP! I'm thinking of just gutting the cat, but I'm not 100% sure that's the problem. HELP PLEASE!

My car is the same way durring 65-70 mph, and its perfectly normal for your egt's to skyrocket durring a partial throttle pull, the ecu is advancing your timing when you go less than say 80% throttle(taking a guess there). I like to go 80% throttle till my egts get over 1600, then I mash the pedal to the floor bringing them down. check all the connections on your a/f meter, it sounds like there is something either broken or loose.

Get rid of the stock exhaust, let that turbo breathe....

Its not surprising to see the high EGT's at part throttle. Like mentioned above, the ECU is adjusting fuel and other factors to maintain economy and emmissions. If you see high EGT's at WOT, then you have tuning to do. If the car runs well, but the A/F gauge is pegged at a negative number, then you probably have a wiring problem. If you drop by Gainesville some weekend, I'll check it out.

Well, the other thing that bothers me, is when cruising, I usually keep my vacuum around 10in/Hg when cruising. It used to sit around 1300-1350 when cruising, but now it's not. I checked all the wiring and it looks good. When I got WOT, the gauge only says it's like .69-.78, but my EGT's go down and I KNOW it's tuned safely. Also, after cruising, no boost, my manifold's glowing a little bit. Now I KNOW that's not normal...

Sure it is. They all do that to varying degrees.

Just like he has a Cartech, and KNOWS he's tuned safely.

You know what dude? This is a technical post. If you feel like being an asshole, please go elsewhere. If you ALSO read correctly, I'm building an 8-injector setup and I'm almost done with that (just need to get the lower manifold drilled and mount it up!). I was merely asking if my EGT's looked OK because I've never had them that high while cruising before, they usually stayed around 1300-1350. Now, if you have any furhter smart ass remarks, please go end yourself, now. Thank you.

Yeah bro even 1300 degree heat will make a mani glow. As for the voltage readings from your O2 have you been able to hook up a datalogger and see what the ECU sees as far as voltage? If not it could be a bad sensor, (you don't always get a code) if the ECU is seeing the same bad voltage it could just be the sensor..

If you get 0.69V at WOT and negative numbers when you decel hard, then you probably have a bad ground. A bad ground will shift all readings down. Cruise up to 4k and let off hard in gear. The A/F should dip to 0V for a second. If it dips much into the negative, then you probably have a ground issue (either location or wiring). For the record, I've never seen my manifold glow at all. Maybe I'm too nice to the car.
