Hi guys,

I am driving a GST 97.
I am used to having ticking noise in the morning in Winter(when it is cold). And, I brought it to dealer..... they said there is no prolem. But, I think it is kinda adnormal when I am driving it.

The ticking noise increase when RPM.

One more question, it is hard to shift in the morning in winter. Anyways to improve it ?

where is the ticking coming from in the engine? Id almost put money on it that your exhaust gasket is blown and the reason it only does it in the cold is because the when the manifold gets hot enough it expands and makes up the difference of the gasket.

My eclipse used to do the same thing in the lower passenger side corner of the exhaust manifold, but it would go away once it warmed up.

but, I can't find where the tickering noise from...... It seems like from the driver's side.....

I just heard that it increases in loudness when the RMP increases.
If the exhaust gasket is really broken, will it cause any problem?

Techincally cold air could get sucked back into the engine and that can cause problems i've heard but i don't know what kind. Bad gas mileage, decreased power, but probably nothing thats going to kill the engine. It increases with rpm because the pistons are moving faster pushing the exhaust out faster which happens to sound like a tick. Since it sounds like a tick its probably only leaking out of one cylinder/exhaust port.

It probably wouldn't be hard at all for you to pull off your exhaust/turbo manifold and throw a new good gasket in there. Cost you maybe 20 bucks in parts.

if it won't cause much problem, I may want to live with it for 1-2 months and then fix it after the winter.

Becoz I am not pushing the car a lot. Just some occasions when I can't control myself to do it.

just get one of the good copper gaskets, don't get one of the ones that are made out of some kind of paper.

Make your own homemade stethoscope out of some 5/8" or 1/2" vaccuum line and try to pinpoint the source.

You should also consider ticking lifters. They usually tick when you start the engine up cold. It will follow engine RPM. You can hear it from the valve cover. This is really common on our engine. The fix is to replace them. I used a set from the 2.4l PT engine because they are supposed to be "improved".

hey corbin he is driving a gst. But i don't know if the lifters are loud on the 4g63, it could be that too.

Does your clutch hit the ground when you make a left corner? If it does then that sound would be from your cas being beaten to death. I'm hoping for your sake your answer to the above question is no. Have you checked the endplan on your crank by chance? Theres a pesky thrust bearing that wears when you push your clutch in and over time it gets worse and will slowly destroy your motor. Sucks.

I think the answer is "NO". Luckily.....
but, there is one thing.... my previous performance clutch it died in 1.5 year.
And, I am using stock clutch now..... My dealer 2 years ago told me that Clutch Mart didn't set up the clutch well....

I didn't even see that. I was on 2GNT autopilot. I believe that the 4G63's have lifter tick issues just like us. I'm not sure if one generation is more susceptible than another.
