Runs not to bad.. just have to get the FPR tuned right and get my intercooler installed (1g sidemount) and life will be getting better..

otherwise.. it boosts to 10psi just like any other system.. ;-)

Odd...I swear I posted something before about getting a backyard turbo kit for $1k or under and was shot down by several people dying to prove me wrong. Thanks guys.

Of course its doable. Anything CAN be done, but WheatKing has been at it for a year at least (I remember when he was posting pics last fall about his setup on the old message board).
If you have the time, patience, parts, and a spare car to get around while yours is down for that amount of time, go for it! :)

For me, its just less stress and extra work that is taken off my shoulders buying a kit that was professionaly designed for my car.

By the way Wheatking, great work on that turbo system! I was wondering how that was going. Good luck on it in the future!

Now if we can just hear from the guy who was turbocharging his 2.4L Spyder.

Yeah I like to think of Wheatking as Mr. ASOG/Wrenchhead. Been f*cking with these 420As and on the board for as long as I care to remember (do you see his car line up. hello!) Not your avg joe and even so I'm pretty sure the turbo didn't just come off Mitsubishi heavy industries assembly line or fresh from a Turbonectic balance job. Plus he has hook ups!

heh thanks..

As for hookups? not many..

Just about everything on the turbo kit is used.. the new parts i got from canadian tire.. (Canadian pepboys/homedepot like cross)

I'm using as many parts from my 1G talon as i can..

so far the list includes:

14B turbo,
1G intercooler,
BOV & upper IC pipe
Intake tube,
Oil return line
part of the oil sender line
..

Few more parts are gonna make it onto the sebring.. I want to put the 1G aircan in there just for the hell of it (ducted to fresh air ofcourse) The more talon parts i can get in there, the more it will piss off the "holier than thou 4g63" DSM biggots. You guys all know the type.. the same ones that swear up and down that the 2g's + avenger/sebring ARENT DSM's ;-)

You said about $850 USD so far for the install....and you're installing everything youself? How far is it to being done? How hard was it to find all the parts (including turbo) in good condition?

Unfortunately, Wheatking's backyard turbo setup isn't feasible on Talons/Eclipses since there isn't enough room between the a/c fan and the engine. (He's using the stock manifold.) If you don't have a/c, then it might fit...

The talons/eclipses have 2" less engine bay room than the avenger/sebring.. so it does fit with the stock manifold for me.. (about 1/4" clearance from the A/C fan)..

As for the stock manifold.. that's gonna be replaced with a custom built turbo manifold from Alain.. basically some elbows and tees welded together on a custom lasercut flange (which matches the stock ports exactally!) This will allow me to put the AC back in. Like the star manifold it's offset between the #3,4 cylinders so the o2 housing will fit.. it also orientates the turbo vertically so you don't need to re-work the center section of the turbo.

As I do more work i'll update the pages.. i'll put together a vhowto so that anyone with the brains (or lack thereof) can try it also.

Think you can get Alain to make more manifolds if it turns out good?

LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-01 AT 07:23 PM (PST)

I'm the Alain doing the manifolds for the 420a engine
with my partner Redrotors (Marc)

I need to do a correction on Wheatking's post
The offset is between cylinders 2 and 3, closer to #3
He didn't had his manifold yet when he did his last post

We are also doing a garrett t-3 version, that will be
ready by next week

I will post the url as soon as the links are corrected
probably tommorow

Ok, just bought some parts...I'm basically going to collect parts off a 1g and drop it into me Esi, and have a mechanic do the install. It's a complete turbo kit off a '91 talon tsi jsm motor. It's a TD05 turbo, manifold, all intercooler piping, intercooler, vacuum lines and clamps, stock BOV and gaskets. Figuring I take it to someone who knows how to install it, is there anything else I need to make it work besides guages/timers?

Yeah you need a manifold that is made for the 420A engine and it had to be able to bolt up to the turbo. There is a shitload of other stuff you need too. . .
