78730, HRC Portfueler Opinions
Posted by KTECLIPSE, Oct-28-04 08:10 AM
I am very interested in purchasing a HRC Portfueler in the next month so that I can install it during the winter downtime. I also would feel more confident running higher boost with a better fuel system (the SMFU is good for average boost but takes some time to react to boost. When the car is WOT, you can feel the fuel kick in and it worries me that this extra kick can do some severe damage to the motor - rapid pressure increase in the cylinder, etc)

Anyways, I know that James has received, installed, and dynoed the kit but I would like to hear other opinions on the kit. Please don't just post saying the Megasquirt, 034, standalone, etc is better. I would like some useful feedback on the kit - smoothness into boost, daily driveability, average fuel mileage increase, how the car runs, air/fuel ratios seen under boost (how good the Hahn tune is), etc.

Btw, how many people out there have ordered a kit?

Thanks,
Kurt

My 8 Injector setup is for sale w/ 55# injectors for 1/2 the price of a portfueler. If you interested check the link in my sig.

Seeing as how it works the same way as an 8inj I would say it works great. But it uses a different controller, I've never used that controler so I don't know if it has any quirks.

I do recall that siueclipse had to "tune" his somewhat also.

I see no reason why you wouldnt. The fact that HRC provides some basic maps to get you going is cool, but even then they wont match perfectly to your car and setup.

i haven't touched the tuning on mine yet. took awhile to understand exactly what the fuck was going on with it.

That's not what I meant. I read most of your posts and appreciated you taking the time to post install pictures. I've also read your dyno runs but didn't see any wideband graphs with your dyno. I also thought your car was down for repairs due to a headgasket. If you can answer any of the driveability or other questions, feel free. I was just looking to get as many reviews as possible from many different angles.

i know that isn't what you meant. i was just playing. the dyno i go to doesn't have a wideband, so i use my own. ill post those logs sometime. yeah. i popped my headgasket trying to run too much boost. it might be running tonight.

I stand corrected.

I might have gotten the wong idea when you mentioned that you had to open the AIC to get to the comp. port.

well. when i hooked it up. i connected to the com port while the car was on (not running) just to ensure the unit had power and i could read the map.

My install was fairly painless. I had to shave the valve cover, which James did not have to do, but it was no biggy at all. I made my own fuel lines and fittings to work w/ the system, since HRC was unable to fulfill that end of it at that time. I placed an order to summit, got the parts next day using regular ground, lol.

Everything seems a-ok so far, but I have only put 200 miles on it, although they were hard miles. I havent opened it up past 18psi yet. EGT's stay low, runs fairly smooth, little hiccups here and there, but waaaaay better driveability that I ever had with the Accel DFI setup.

Can you expand on the "little hiccups." Also what on your end did you have to do to adjust the fuel curve or was the HRC map good enough?

Yes please explain the above statement. I am hoping that HRC has gotten everything together to ship a complete kit by now since may of you were the first to receive the kit and probably have provided feedback to them intentionally or unintentionally.

Maby I led on there are 'issues'. There aren't any as of now.

As I said, the install was pretty painless, I did it without any instructions since they forgot to send them. I did have Craig email them to me to make sure I did everything correct before starting the motor.

The EGT's are very manageable durring all driving conditions so far. There is a small transition into boost which can be expected, and if you are cruising and happen to be right at the point of making positive manifold pressure, you may get a little shudder here and there, but its not a real big thing.

Yes, their provide map(at a charge) is a good start. I am sure if you were tuning for max hp, you could do some tuning to it, but I just care about driveability right now, so it works great for me. Then again, I have Hahn's kit, and my motor is not modified except how theirs was when they made the maps.

So if you want a map you HAVE to pay for it? I thought you were paying for the support?

I don't think you have to pay for it but I am sure the standard map has seen more dyno time as well as on street tuning than anyone would want to do or pay for. I think the cost for the base map is around $50 which is much cheaper than days at a dyno run.

Thanks to all the posters who explained the system. I would like to order mine soon and will probably have some 390cc injectors and a Vortech SFMU for sale in the next month.

If you want help with the fuel lines setup, hit me up, I ran stainless lines and fittings cheaper than hahn's regular hose setup, lol... and summit stocks the parts :rolleyes but i did have a few spare parts from an abandoned nos kit laying around also

And save yourself $$ and get the fuel injectors elsewhere like summit as well... saves 30 bucks or so

I got my portfueler system a week ago and am waiting on the parts to rebuilt my engine now with stronger pistons and rods, but I am just wondering...can the portfueler be tuned by a dyno or should I have told the people at Hahn I wanted to tune the system on a dyno because I heard that to be able to tune it, you have to tell hahn to provide an extra something with it? Since it comes pretuned I guess?

edit: Also I have the star stage II turbokit and I have 415cc injectors with the portfueler and was hoping to run 20psi daily and was wondering if I could run more or should run less?

Bit and owned by boost bug!

Did you order the software for the aic? If not you won't be able to change the base map. If you did order the software let me know what you think of in terms of ease of operation.

the software is very confusing at first because bill changed the way the maps are setup inside the software. its hard to explain. youll figure it out.
