the noise that i have been experiencing only when going into boost and only with colder outside temps, that was previously thought to be pre-detination of some kind due to no intake temp compensation with the 034EFI causing me to go lean with the denser, colder air...
is in fact not!!

played with the 034, got the AF to sit flattly around 10.5ish for 2 3rd gear pulls and STILL have the ticking!!!
so now i am cluless as to what the noise is and what to do next!


any thoughts, inputs, ideas? an i gonna blow my shit up if i keep boostin??

Well I'll throw this in although its not technical at all. A few weeks ago when I'd go into boost and the rpms would rise I'd get a knocking or clanking sound from the engine bay. I tried and tried to find it and finally I put the car up on stands and found that the heat sheild that ran down the exhaust had rusted loose and was rattling, I also found that the brackets that hold the intake manifold were also loose and rattling. :shrug Are you sure the sound is inside your motor? I was almost ready to pull my motor again to check things out before I found out it was no big deal. I'm not very familiar with the 034 setup so I'm not sure what to tell you. How do your egt's look? If their not to high while your boosting I'd start to look else where for the problem.

Is it a hard clunk? or a slight tick?

If its the "cricket" sounds from your head then thats just our noisy head components. Thats normal, but can be "fixed" by upgrading to the Pt cruiser stuff.

If its in the bottom end then thats when I would be carefull.

its nothing loose in the engine bay. it only does it when its cold. and only in boost!it sound like valve train noise....a definate ticking.

its a tick that very much resembles lifter ticking, except louder (i think, never heard our infamous lifter ticks before). i have the upgraded PT stuff in there, the motor was only bored .020 over.

and again the weird part is that it only happens in colder temps, and in boost. last night when i did the aforementioned runs, it was about 40* outside, with intake temps in the low to mid 60's.
today, (daytime)its closer to 50ish* and i had no ticking in boost at all! never touched the fuel from last night, nothing has changed.

what the hell could case that noise only in those conditions?

You see the head sees much lower oil pressure. How long were your driving before you stepped on it? Even If the gauge marked warm, the oil might not have been flowing all that well do to the viscosity.

I also only heard the ticking when I went to say northern california in winter. Its about those temps. Also only at night and on freeway runs.

Kinda sounds like a flute and metalic crickets. Another note is that It sounded loud enough that I could hear it over the exhaust when on the highway. Mostly on interchanges where I had to let off the throttle for a turn.

i dont think its viscosity related, cause when i went over to dyno a few weeks ago, it would not do it down at a lower elevation, but up higher in a mountain pass it would do it, but then when i got down lower again, it would not.
however...
i just changed my oil about a month or so ago to penzoil 10w30. im the standard 1/2 qt low that we all seem to run at...
shold i go lower on the viscosity, 10w20 maybe?

Have you checked the EGR gaskets? Make sure they have a tight seal.

no egr sytem! just very well sealed (i will check again) covers!

Why do you think the EGR wouold be involved, and how?

If it was a density issue then It would do it more when your at lower elevation. Since you just said it does the opposite then That just gives me more reason to beleive that it not.

This is a tricky one...

One important question here, what boost level does this happen at? Does it do it even in lower boost? If it only does it in hihger boost, 15 psi maybe, then it could be detonation..I've run well under 11.0:1 and could still get 1-2 seconds of knock during peak torque rpm, on a 5th to 4th gear WOT downshift at 15 psi...

does it almost from 1-2 psi all the way up! This morinig (frosty) tick tick tick, few hours later and a bit warmer... no tick tick tick! :scratch

I said EGR because sometimes a small exhaust leak right at the head(like at the exhaust manifold gasket or EGR port) can make a ticking sound.
