78076, Can I change exhaust manifold gasket w/o taking off DP? Posted by Semperboost, Oct-13-04 09:41 AM
I don't want to go through all the trouble of unbolting the DP (stripping bolts). I was thinking of just unbolting the manifold and pulling it out a little, sliding the gasket in and bolt back up with some studs. I also figured I won't need to resurface the manifold cuz it's a cast iron one and the head is alluminum so there's more of a chance of the head being warped, does that sound rite? Thanks

Eh, I don't think you can to that. Depending on your setup you could leave the downpipe on the turbo and unbolt the DP from the rest of the exhaust if you have a flange down there to get some play.

I just changed my exhaust manifold gasket a few days ago...
On MY setup I could do just that, unbolt the manifold and pull it off the studs... pull out the old gasket, clean up the surfaces and install the new gasket...
I had about one inch of clearance between the studs and the manifold... enough to do the work. But I don't know how it would work on another setup ;) My kit is all custom :)

Well, if the DP is braced to the block, unbolt that. Your flex section (you do have a flex section, right?) should give you enough play to do what you want to do.
