78021, How tight are your Ex. manifold bolts

Im putting my kit on and I need to know, do you guys actually torque the bolts? If so what are the torque specs your using.

And yes for the love of god, I searched before I asked and came up with nothing.

Eh, I have the factory 4G63 bolts/studs/washers. I don't know what I torqued them to - I just cranked them until they felt good.

If you need a number, (I'm pulling this out of my ass here) I'd guess that 20-30 foot pounds would be plenty.

remember, the head is aluminum ;-) so dont get too wild or you will be calling your friend mr. helicoil for help

Yeah thats what Im afraid of. I have a Chilton, but I dont know if Im just missing the torque specs or there just not there. huh

According to the Chiltons I have, you should tighten them down to 17ft/lbs. AND yeah, like /\/\/\/\ said, remember the head is aluminum, so follow the torque spec.

use lock washers on them. i didnt have a problem with mine until the shootout, when 2 of them magically disappeared. i *think* the torque specs on them was like 21 ft lbs, but like stated above 20-30 should be fine.

Honestly, I would go ahead and helacoil the block. All turbo manifolds for our car are known to bend and warp which results in a exhaust leak which results in higher EGT temps and a boost leak. Once you helacoil the block you will be able to torque them down more than the standard 20lbs.

Exhaust manifold bolts really don't work well for our setup. I very highly recommend using exhaust manifold studs. I use the factory 4G63 studs. Install them hand tight and use a lock-washer and nut. You'll never have to worry about it again.

Or just get some 8mmx1.5 (i think the pitch was 1.5) Stainless steel studs. I couldn't find studs so I just got bolts and cut them. It works great.

Agreed. You have a danger of stripping the aluminum when using bolts. Buy some ARP studs that are M8 and hand thread them in. Torquing nuts down on studs is not placing nearly as much stress on the aluminum threads inside the head.
