7802, Wastegate question?
Posted by bonecupidboze, Jul-24-01 08:40 AM
If your wastegate came with a 7lb spring and your running 5psi of boost, is it possible to turn up boost 1 to 2psi more by adjusting it from the wastegate or is this a bad idea? Heard stories of people detonating while screwing around with the wastegate but can you guys be more specific in explaining the wastegate theory to me?

Adjusting a wastegate is the same as adjusting a boost controller. Boost is boost no matter how you adjust it. But a wastegate can only adjust it a very little bit. If you want a major change get a controller.

On the Deltagate you are just altering the tension on the spring a little by turning the screw in/out. Not much adjustment there. I have yet to bother with mine since manual controllers are so cheap.

Since I cant use photopoint IMAGINE THIS:

Thanks for the info guys. I tried to adjust my boost with a MBC that I purchased a couple of days ago, but no matter how I adjust it, it still over boost even when that sucker is backed out all the way. I move the screw in 1/4 at a time but it still goes way beyond my limits. What a headache I'm getting. It's a ball and spring MBC. Couldn't figure it out so I took it off. If any of you guys have other ways to do it I'd be glad to hear from you.

I believe the problem you're thinking of with adjusting the wastegate is when you try to turn up the boost too much with it. If you preload the spring(by turning the screw way in), you can actually prevent the wastegate from opening up. Then you'll boost to infinity until your engine blows. That's all you have to be careful of. I think the spring rating is typically used up to 2 lbs below its rating though (your 7lb spring would be good up to 5 psi). I could be wrong though (i have a 7lb spring and I'm running about 6psi).
Good luck
