7752, Compression test Posted by speedracer21, Jul-23-01 10:29 AM
Ok well tonight I'm going to do a compression check since I've got blue smoke (another post) and a few ppl have reccomended it. I know you get the gauge tool from a parts shop and place it in each spark plug hole, and then crank it to get the reading. But I've never done it or seen it done, so I wondered if anyone here has any pointers (I'm sure you do) :-) thanks

Well I did the compression test, here are the #'s Passanger side to driver's side. 168, 177, 173, 188 How do these numbers look??
I checked my friends nt to try and get a base one but his was a lot cooler than mine so i think thats why his readings were lower 165, 167, 165, 150,

Shaun and I did a compression check on his car a few months ago, and all his numbers checked in above 200. Numbers will vary from 170 and up depending on mileage and condition of the engine. If you're smoking and compression is checking in under 170, its prolly your rings.

Well I gave a call to the local mitsu dealer and talked to the service manager, he told me the stock compression should be right around 175. I told him my numbers and he said they were fine. I guess only time will tell.

Same thing for me. I had 170's all the way across the board. I everyone on the board was telling me I was way low. So, I to called the mitsu. dealers, and they told me that I should be at 170's. I also took it in for a leak down test. I had less than 10% on the leak down which is normal. The best way to find out if anything is wrong inside you engine is to do a leak down test. It will give you the % of air leaking and were it is leaking from.
Hope this helps

I had this strange dream last night that I was looking at my engine running and the crank case ventillation tube was shooting gobbs of oil all over and I realized one or more of my piston rings had seized.. Isn't that wierd? What kind of car nut has car nightmares? Lol, anyways good luck with your smoke prob. How much did you get charged for a leak down test? -- Brad 98 T-GS

Leak down tests only show you if you have air leaking in your IC pipes. It can not tell you why you have blue smoke coming out your exhaust.
I did my compression test right before installing the turbo and I had 210 across the board. As long as your numbers are all within about 5-10 degrees of each other then you are fine. That still doesn't tell you why you are blowing smoke though.

uuuummmm, Ok. By IC you meen Intercooler right. Well you might be thinking of something different. I don't have my turbo on yet and I had a leakdown done six months ago on my N/T engine. A leak down test us used to measure the amount of air leaking inside your engine. Like from your rings, head gasket, valves. (this is a fact)(sorry dont meen to come of like an ass) You may be able to us it to see if you have a leak in your ic piping as well. Dont know about that for sure.
If you have at least 170 or close, all the way across your fine.
I thought blue smoke was oil? or something like that. I say start small and work big. Start by doing a FULL tune up and go from there. But if something is busted inside like a ring or valve your going to have noticed a big power loss.
Get a leakdown done. That will tell you what is going on inside your engine better than a comp. test.
I had a local race shop do my leakdown on my car. It cost $40 took 15 min. Just call around to some tuner shops and ask if they can do one. I think you can buy a tester but I dont know were or how much they are. It is just a little box that you hook up to a air source and then plug into your car. Your best bet is to call some muscle car shop if you don't have any import performance shops in your area. Ya, I know it sucks having to deal w/ some of these domestic guys but most of those shops really know their shit. They've been doing this car stuff allot longer than most of us.
hope this helps
