I am concidering using aluminum rods on my 2.4 project. They are rated at 700 hp. What are everyones thoughts? I am going to be boosting over 20psi.

should be good if they are really rated that high.

Alum rods have been used in boosted motors since the 70's. Typically very expensive due to less rotating mass and built very strong.

If you have a good deal go for it.

yeah look into how much it weighs compare to stock ones, it'll tell you the difference right there. it will also rev a lot quicker. what company does these?

I will be getting them custom made for my motor. I want to try something different so I think I am going to go this rout. Those wiht an alum flywheel should rev like a street bike. Thanks for the opinions.

I WAS HAVING MY CRANK AND RODS CUSTOM MADE AND THEY SCREWED EVERYTHING UP. FIRST THEY MADE ME BUY THEM A WHEEL CAUSE THEIRS WOULDNT GRIND IT(THE CRANK) RIGHT. SO I BOUGHT THEM THE WHEEL AND THEY STILL COULDNT GRIND IT RIGHT. 2 LOBES WERE DIFFERENT SO THEY DECIDED TO MAKE CUSTOM RODS TO FIT THE 2 SCREWED UP LOBES AND THEN THE CUSTOM RODS ENDED UP WEIGHING LESS THAT THE OTHER 2 RODS SO WHEN THEY STARTED TO BRING IT UP TO SPEED ON THE ROTATOR IT WAS SO FAR OUT OF BALANCE IT RUINED THE CRANK. AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF I ORDERED ALL OF THIS STUFF IN FEBUARY AND THEY JUST DID THIS 2 WEEKS AGO. NOW IM ORDERING ONE THATS ALREADY MADE. I RECOMEND YOU DO THE SAME UNLESS YOU HAVE ALOT OF FAITH IN YOUR MACHINE SHOP.

I wouldn't do it.

Ever work with aluminum? Why do you think Pro class cars use them? Aluminum rods aren't for the street.

If you want light weight rods go with titanium IMO

just get the billet steel

the allum rods arent 6.16, theyre longer....i.e- shorter pistons, less weight which is always good but like someone said ^^^ allum rods arent to streetable.

try something different? how many people on 2gnt have 6.160 rods....one :P id say billet steel 2.4 long rods is pretty damn different

From experience, inovating isn't always the best thing to do, unless you have enough cash to mess around with and your car is not your daily driver. I would stick with Crower rods just because I know they work right. The 4g63 does have a company that sells Al. rods for them, ours dont as far as I know.

I would stick to steel for longevity. I know Aluminum rods are light and stiff, but Professionals can use them because of sponsorship paying for a lot, as well as having the luxury of tearing down the motor every race/couple of races.

I do not think Aluminum would last for very many miles on the street. If you do go ahead with it though, keep us informed on how well they work.

Aluminum rods aren't good for the street for the same reason aluminum pistons slap. They expand much more than steel when they increase in temperature, which means that until they are hot, they rod bearing clearance is all out of whack. People have run them in Neons before, but it is imperative to allow them to reach operating temp before the motor is ever run off idle.

I'm not a huge fan of the stretching that Aluminium rods are notorious for. Also, I don't like the fact that the big end of the rod is much more likely to go out of round then is an steel rod.

The choice is exclusively yours, though. I think that Titanium is a better alternative. They cost about twice as much as steel, for most applications, and lack the brute strength of steel. What they also lack, however, are the work hardening issues and the short fatigue life issues which plague aluminium connecting rods. It is a sure-fire way of trading 20 percent of the weight for 15 percent of the strength.

OK, thanks for everyones input. I beleve my mind is now made up. I am going to go wiht the billet steel rods. I was leaning towards the billet aluminum because I could get them for just over 500 as where the billet steel rods I am looking at like 700-800. Gota keep saving :thumbsup

If you really want something even lighter get Titanium rods. I would not run aluminum in a street engine. (probably said before, but I'm too lazy to read)
