Well I've had my turbo for about a month now. And I just noticed yesterday that after a few min. at idle I start seeing light blue, almost white smoke start to come out of my exhaust.
At first I thought it might be the valves, but a local shop told it might be unburnt fuel, due to the up graded fuel system, and stock ignition. So I was going to get an msd or some type of ignition box to get more spark. Has anyone else had this problem??? Need help asap!

Blue smoke usually indicates that you have a coolant leak somewhere. Maybe coolant is leaking through your combustion chambers or something. Again, i'm no mechanic but I've read a lotta maintanance shit and usually this is a sign of this type of leak

blue smoke= running rich, if it were coolant you would smell it and it would be steam not smoke

Yea its running rich. At WOT the a/f reads full rich. So thats why I think its not burrning all the fuel.

When you run rich you get black smoke not blue. I hate to say this but blue smoke usually means oil is being burnt. I had a 1g with 160,000 miles on it and it burned some blue smoke and it would eat oil like crazy. Definetly have that checked out.

I was also told that it might just be my valves are dirty and not seating right. So I'm running fuel system cleaner thru my baby right now. And I also plan on trying the down hill test (talked about in the vfaq link) Because I haven't found a shop yet that I trust to give me an honest diag. On the plus side it's still under the bumper to bumper warranty :-)

As for your car... do a compression test. That will pretty much tell you if your internals are okay. If I saw blue smoke coming out of my exhaust I would be very worried. Do you notice any oil in your engine bay? out the breather...etc? Thats another thing to worry about.

There was a 97 GS-T at the shootout blowing blue smoke everywhere. Even at idle. I asked him if he had it checked out, and he said he blew a ring or two, but wanted to run it at the shootout anyway. (not really smart, but the car still ran).

It could be blowby oil recircluating through your intercooelr pipes and back through your intake tract and through to your engine and then...voila! burning oil!

Try to get a catch can to keep the oil out of the intake tract, while at the same time using some intake cleaner and spray the hell out of your throttle body.

white=coolant and/or oil. worn valve guides that allow oil to pass through them will cause huge amount of white smoke on start up or if engine is idles for an extended period.


It can be hard to tell the difference between the 1rst two(unless its at the point of an old hooptie where its obviously oil). Have someone drive behind you and try to analyze it (and smell it too...for fuel or get that old POS fixed smell). I wouldn't worry about either one until it made itself an issue (you'll know trust me. if its blowby from worn rings or valvetrain if will become predictable).

you can also be burning oil throw your turbo (bad turbo seals that leak oil into the
intake housing of your turbo.

I am pretty sure that's not the case tho, since you have a new turbo (well at least it's not older than 3 years)

a compression test will tell you everything you need to know (low compression will be caused by bad oil rings, or bad valve seals)good compression tells you that you might just have a bad turbo or simply a oil blow by from your valve cover to your intake manifold.

Yea so far it's only happened twice and I've tried to recerate the conditions to see if it will blow smoke again but it dose'nt. And my engine bay is oil free, even my breather on the manifold is still clean. I think my car is just having hiccups from hitting 120mph friday night at the races :-)
