i've posted in Performance/Engine and thought i might try here for help, well my buddie just got his car back after rebuilding his motor(96 eclipse..howell long rod kit and hrc stage 2 kit, safc) started it up the first day it would start but rev on its on very hard(replaced iac fixed problem)drove about half a mile then engine shuts down and wont start.2nd day we replaced crank sensor and it started ran but really ruff idel, went to autozone to check the engine light codes got cel codes,p0505,p0123,p1297,and p0121.most of them are issues with map and tps sensor..3rd day replaced map sensor and tps it seems to fixed most of the ruf ideling but had a lil...4th day he drove the car to work and from about half a mile from work the car just shuts off and dies..luckly it died next to an autozone..so he pushes it into there parking lot and tres to star it but no good.at autozone he replaced starter, altornator, spark plugs and wires, coil pack, most of all the sensors, and still the car will not start..its driving him crazy..he loves this car so much but it been giving him hell and i don't know how to help him..if u guys have any ideas let me know..he now think that the ecu is fried or bad..could the ecu be dead??help please...thanks in advance.

i did a search and it seems that some of u guys did replace ur ecu after a motor rebuild, thats odd..where would be a good place to pick up an ecu?should he replace the wireing harness to the ecu as well because his safc is spliced into it and he wants to get rid of it.

i dont see a need to replace the wiring harness. if wires were cut, then just fix them. the wiring harness if very large and run fucking everywhere.

i got my ecu from a junk yard for about 150 bux shipped.

Sorry, a little off topic. Once we get ignition control with the megasquirt, I plan on removing my ECU, so long as I can still get my gauges to work. :)

Good luck with that I don't think the squirt will run your guages. Also I believe slick still uses it to control the IAC ...
For the guy with the issue, did he replace the fuel or spark ASD relays??? And also why would you replace an ALT for a starting issue????

Won't start is awfully broad. What does it do when you try to start it? Nothing ... clicking sounds ... compression but won't kick over ... etc ... Got some more details about what it is specifically doing?

my buddie got the alt checked at atozone and it was bad so he replaced it.fuel or spark ASD relays were replaced aswell..when you try to start it? Nothing happens no clicking sounds ..he said he check compression and it was like 170 across.he's thinking ecu might be bad..

try having him hit the ecu with a hammer lightly, not like a little girl hit but not a strong man hit either. My ecu was bad as well with similar problem, and it would come back on if i tapped the ecu with a hammer. If it comes back then it is most likely the ecu that is dead.

try also taking the afc out. One wire off on that sucker and your in the same boat.

The car will crank without the ECU even plugged in. if the car won't even turn over, your problem lies elsewhere.

he said that the car will crank and sometimes it won't..ecu?he wants to also ask if the safc will cause any starting problem..he said hes gonna try to get another ecu soon..will any 96-99eclipse rs(manuel tran)ecu work?

okay today we changed out the ecu and installed another one that he got from the salvage yard..installed it and car still won't start,it cranks but it wouldn't start.my buddie then decides to disconect all the wires from the safc to the ecu wires and to are suprise it started up..it idels great with the new ecu..he then wanted to try the old ecu and it also strated up..lil ruff idel but it worked.we put the new one back on and took it for a test drive and it ran great but on are way back from the test run it just shutts off like it did the last time..he tried to start and its no good..changed ecu again and still no good..this is getting to be a real pain..do u guys have any other ideas??any help would be greatly thankful..

you most likely have a wire that is melted somewhere. Check them all. Especially the ones near the egr tube.

what wire should he look for that would have the most chance of being the problem..for the car not starting and the shuting down when it does run.

I could not say which it is, but you are going to have to look at them all. Just start with the loom that comes out of the ecu and travels towards the throttle body. It typically goes UNDER the egr tube. If its over the tube i would bet its melting down the wires in there. The fact that you unhooked the afc and got the car running for a bit leads me to suspect one of the wires that the afc was connected to. Im not sure why you would not be able to crank it over. Does he have a alarm? Mabey that is also suspect. I had all this go on with my car too, turned out to be a dead ecu, along with lots of melted wires from the egr tube. I have my tube gone now so i don't have to worry about frying them again. basic egr blockoff kit was like 17$ off of ebay. Don't forget to check the wires that go to the IAC motor as well, they run near that tube and can get fried.

there's your lesson fellas...when you have a sudden problem, you always work backwards from your previous modification. damn all that money, and the problem was not wiring things right. i hope you soldered your SAFC wiring. you can't just splice it, it could be that one of those wires are loose, but i agree with the EGR pipe problem as well, check around that piping and see if anything is melted.
