Is there a break in period for a brand new turbo? I did a search and all I found were posts for motor breakins.

For most turbos this about all you need to do:

1.) Befoe starting car, have someone hold the comp wheel still (use a rag so you dont loose fingers)
2.) start car, still holding turbo.
3.) Let car idle for about 60 seconds to assure good oil flow into the turbo.
4.) let go of the comp wheel (carefully)

Thats about it... just gotta make sure the turbo gets oil before it spins!

thats damn scary if you ask me.


just take off the oil line to the turbo and aim it into a cup. start the car till you see oil shoot out into the cup. if you dont see any within a minute or two, shut off the car. if you have oil... cool, hook up the line and your done.

The point is not just to get oil to the turbo inlet, but to get oil into the bearings before the shaft spins...
The normal bearings on a turbo work by floating the shaft on a film of oil... if the turbo starts spinning before you get oil to the bearings the shaft will be running on the bearing material.

If you just take off the oil line the turbo will still spin.

It's really not that scary... at idle the turbo's not gonna rip your hands off or anything.

I'm a bigger fan of priming the turbo by putting the return line into a bucket, unplugging the injector and coil pack harnesses, and cranking the fucker until the turbo is returning oil. It will not spin on crank.

But, if you would rather, I think that you should start the car, put a brick on the gas pedal and go grab the turbine wheel to stop the turbo.

why not just inject some oil before you even crank it? Like corky bell recommends in maximum boost?

You can just inject a bit of motor oil in to the oil inlet on the turbo. Spin the turbo by hand for a few revolutions then hook the oil feed line back up and start the car. Everything should be fine.

I highly DO NOT recommend that you try to stop spinning the compressor wheel with a rag in your hand while the car is running. That is just moronic.

For fuck sake dude, you don't stop it while it's spinning... you hold it before you start the damn car...

At idle if you dont give it any gas it doesnt take much to hold the turbo...

You can do it the other ways mentioned here, my way is just another way that works... but for closed minded people that don't know what they're doing, perhaps you better stay away from things that move.

Just disconnect the coil pack and crank it 10 or 15 times over. If your really worried that oil is not reaching the turbo for some reason just feel the feed when the motor is hot. The line will be filled with hot oil, ouch.
