75839, EXHAUST: What are my options here? Posted by cyan, Sep-01-04 01:43 PM
ok, i have a little problem with finding an exhaust. the exhaust i need must meet the following criteria:
1) 3" pipe diameter 2) must go over the rear crossmember 3) must facilitate welding a y-pipe and two 3" - 2.5" reducers onto the piping in order to run two mufflers. (IE, not stainless) 4) must come from a manufacturer who also sells the muffler from that system seperately.
i have a rear bumper designed for 2 mufflers, so i'm getting 2 mufflers. the problem is that all of the exhausts that are premade are made of stainless steel. i dont know anyone around here who can weld stainless steel. ordinarily it wouldn't be a problem if i was running one muffler, i could use the one that came with the cat-back. but are there any options, besides getting a custom made exhaust using mild steel mandrel bends? or setting up the second muffler as a dummy? i dont want to do that. the other problem is that looking through old posts, some people say that certain exhausts go over the crossmember (greddy EVO) then in another post someone says it goes under. which is it? one other problem is that whichever exhaust i get that goes over the crossmember has to be from a manufacturer that also sells mufflers by themselves. (greddy doesnt do this with the EVO, apexi does it with the N1 but the N1 pipes go below the crossmember. HKS does it with the dragger but all HKS GST exhausts use 60mm pipes, which is absolutely retarded.
someone figure out a solution to this with me, this is racking my brain.

Asking the same question over and over again usually gets you the same answer...that is until everyone gets tired of answering it.

yeah, haven't quite asked this question before, with all the shit i have to go through now to get an exhaust on the car. nothing valuable to say? didn't think so. and by the way, which user are you that is too much of a coward to post that statement under your standard screenname? you had to register a new SN just to say that? weak.

In terms of quality and flow the ATR 3" exhaust is one of the best i've personally owned. It goes over the cross member but good luck getting any kind of flow out of some crazy piping to run 2 mufflers. I can't stand the sound of 1 fart pipe let alone two.

well if the 3" pipe is split into 2 2.5" pipes with a y-pipe flow shouldnt be interrupted because the 3" pipe would be flowing into essentially a 5" pipe. the only thing that i think would be affected would be the actual flow of the exhaust pulses, not the overall flow capacity. and what do you mean you dont like the sound of 2 mufflers? muffler do exactly what their name suggests, they muffle the exhaust noise. a car equipped with 2 mufflers would be less loud than the same vehicle equipped with only 1 of the same muffler.

Custom, and why not split the exhaust before your run over the crossmember then you don't have to worry about a 3" over the crossmember.
Two 2.5" pipe do not flow anything near a 5" pipe. Essentially you can take area to compair flow (pi times radius squared). 1.25 x 1.25 x 3.14 = 4.90 sq. in. 1.5 x 1.5 x 3.14 = 7.07 sq. in. 5 x 3.14 = 19.63 sq. in.
So two 2.5" pipes flow about half as much as a 5" pipe. But should be just fine splitting off 3"
Please shrink your signature pic a bit, it's huge.

I would ust buy mild steel straight pipe and some bends from summit and fabricate your own. Run a 3" staight pipedown the center like the stock one does then just y it off into 2 2.25 or 2.5 pipes over the rear cross member then just weld on a pair of mufflers of your choice.

Get an external gate, and run one exhaust for the turbo, and one for the wastegate.

There is nothing muffled about a fart pipe dood. Throw two apexi n1 mufflers on your car and see if you can hear your radio at the same volume as when you had 1. Performance exhausts, especially ones created for import cars, sound like hell even with a turbo to quiet them down. I can understand why you want to do it for cosmetic reasons but I challenge you to find a single drag racer that ditched a single 3" exhaust to run 2 2.25" tips off the car in hopes of gaining power. You want some performance, do you dual fart pipe setup but run a 3" Electronic cutout off your dp that you can open when you want to run w/ the big boys.

WTF are you talking about..."fart pipe" is not the technical term for ANY of the parts i'm referring to here. what are you calling fartpipes, the GReddy mufflers? a fart pipe as i understand the slang, means a shitty universal muffler with bad sound dampening capabilites (IE, something you'd buy at autozone), or a muffler with a hole cut out of it. an apex'i, hks or greddy exhaust is in no way a "fart pipe." drag racers dont even use mufflers or cats so that's irrelevent.
my car with 2 mufflers will not be louder than my car with 1 muffler. i know 4 people, who drive 4 different types of cars, (94 accord, 90 crx, 95 mustang GT, and 02 lancer). i've ridden in all 4 cars with their stock exhaust, with a single muffler exhaust, and with dual exhaust, which all 4 of them now have...none of them is louder now than it was in either of the single muffler setups. go back and do some research on the concepts behind muffler design and you'll see that suggesting that more mufflers results in more sound is irrational.
in fact, i give up already...you're in an automotive forum suggesting that a muffler INCREASES the sound of a cars exhaust gas. that is probably the dumbest shit i've ever heard.

here read this article on this SRT-4, i'm going with this setup pretty soon. it helps with back pressure tremendously and that you don't have to go over that axle. you can even see that it makes a difference in performance than a dual exhaust. too much excessive piping and curves makes too much back pressure for your engine. http://sportcompactcarweb.com/tech/0408scc_projsrt/

yeah the problem is our cars already have an unnecessarily complex exhaust path. there are two curves just before the cat that could have been eliminated, as well as two others before the fuel tank. if our cars ride height permitted, you could run a straight exhaust all the way back with the pipes running under the drivers floorpan instead of in between the two floorpans, but we are way too low even at stock height to do that.

Like dude said above. Get some pipe and 2 mufflers of your coice and weld it up. Why can't anyone around you weld stainless steel? What kind of welder is being used?

MIG i assume. no one can weld stainless because i live in a piece of shit town.
