74581, Hahn pump... how much boost
Posted by DSMeclipseGS, Jul-29-04 08:29 PM
I am almost ready to turn the boost up after my rebuild. I am still runnign the stock intank and the Hahn/Accel inline fuel pump. Is it safe to be at 15psi boost with this combo of pumps or will I NEED a Walbro 255 intank? thanks.

the hahn pump will support like 500 ponies do0d....two 500hp pumps?

you'll be fine at 15psi...but of course dont listen to me, check for yourself with both a/f's at wot and fuel pressure, if the shoe fits...wear it

i'm using the walbro 255 hi...works great for me. i removed the inline. You can run both, it makes things quiet. :)

I have both. Yes, it is a LOT quieter than just the inline. I also like the extra bit of redundancy.

The Accel high pressure inline pump will support a lot of power. More than just about anyone will ever make.

Yeah I'd say 500hp is probably even a conservative number. But you should have no problems with it.

Ok thats good to hear... i havent got a chance to get the walbro yet but I definitely want to feel 15 PSI (when I was stage two i still kept it at 5-6psi so it'll be great once I turn it up }()

Yep, the ACCEL inline is noisy at times, but always delivers in the 'fuel under max load' department. I have three of them on the 10-second RS! I know that sounds outrageous, but I use two for the primary fuel system, and one for the nitrous enrichment.

Rationale: the car has made, and will again make, big HP without nitrous on the main fuel system. When I designed the current fuel system layout, I wished to never have to do it again, even if I was making 750 HP without nitrous! It's kinda cool, I will show you folks at the shooutout. I modified the stock sending unit to provide two 1/2" (-8) pickup tubes that run to two filters, then the two pumps. The pressurized fuel from each pump then merges into a single 1/2" line to the engine compartment.

Why yet another pump for the nitrous? Surely the twin-pump main setup is enough for the 600 HP or so we make currently with nitrous engaged, right?. The answer is basic enough: with a seperate, dedicated nitrous enrichment fuel supply system (it has its own regulator too), there is never any interference with the main fuel supply, and vice versa. I have done mucho development with adding big N20 shots to hi-HP turbo engines, and negative interaction with the standard fuel system always occurs when there is not a seperate, dedicated nitrous fuel supply system. The results have ranged fom the sublime to the ridiculous if the fuel systems are combined this way!

Another reason for the dedicated nitrous fuel supply is the huge variance of fuel pressures seen with a FMU style system, which we have also had on the car during nitrous use (this poor mule has seen so many combos, I have lost count!). To properly calibrate the fuel jets @ 90-100 PSI of fuel pressure would require jets so small that the tiniest dirt particles can clog them, resulting in a lean condition on one cylinder. We just can't do allow that to happen! But with a standard fuel pressure for the N20 of 45 PSI, we can run reasonably sized jets that are not so sensitive to clogging. Further, the large variance in pressure seen with an FMU at different boost levels would lead to the nitrous enrichment being incorrect at all but one boost level, and that sure ain't cool!

Boost It!

Sounds like an awesome setup Bill. Can't wait to see it.

I left something out, lol...sorry to 'pirate' the thread, but my original intention, before I started to ramble on, was to show that I still use the ACCEL pump(s) even on my car, and thus show my confidence level in the product, cause I could use just about anything.

My only other choice would have been like a huge single Aeromotive or Weldon pump, or twin Bo$ch pumps. Not only do I find the ACCEL to be more dependable for a street car, even a pair of them still cost a fraction of these others for the same HP range. And if you think an ACCEL pump is noisy, well...The Bo$ch and Aeromotive are not too bad, but you can hear a Weldon a block away (admittedly, they are typically used in race applications where this is not a concern).

Hear it!

Ok thats good to hear Bill. Actually I am planning on keeping the Accel pump along with a Walbro intank pump just to be on the safe side. I just got my 37lb injectors put in and they should be perfect but by next summer I really need a new fuel system. I want to go up to 20psi boost. Get that new fuel system out already!!!:) The 8 injector setup looks really good. Supposedly you may be coming out with something similar.... either way, let us know soon.

I beg to differ on the Aeromotive Bill. I know someone that ran one of those 1000hp Aeromotive pumps and it whined and grumbled like there was no tomorrow (enough to hear it over a fairly loud exhaust at idle). If anyone was complaining about the Accell of the Walbro would shoot themselves if they were running the Aeromotive. If you're saying the Weldon is worse ... I'm just glad I have my SupraTT pump.

No sir, no need. The stock/inline setup you describe is good for 450 HP of fuel flow.
