HRC is about to release a 3" downpipe with spacer for their turbo kits and can be purchased from them in about one to two months.

The new unit is actually much closer to availability than that...we will release details on it in the next week or so. It's trick, it works. You will like!

I'd just like to point out that our standard downpipe is more capable than one might think...we have run low 12's with it with a 16G, over 300 HP to the wheels. With the standard downpipe in our Neon system, which is identical in size, we have put almost 400 HP to the wheels with a 20G. Yeah, I will admit that the use of a section of the stock downpipe seems like it could be improved upon in our standard kit, but everything that adds complexity or more parts also adds to the final cost to the customer. I feel like we have done a good job of choosing what to spend the bucks on and what not to, especially since the power numbers we established with the standard downpipe were more than acceptable.

But for high HP applications, more is better, especially on a turbosystem that has so much power available beyond the standard Stage I and II configurations. Here it comes!

No, it won't. Unlike our standard piece, it will end at the stock cat-con inlet in a 3 bolt, 3" flange. Pics and dyno sheet will be available soon!

the stock cat is a 2 bolt flange

i can see it now....

Bill, I for one am eager to see the new 3" downpipe you guys have made. I already have my 2.5" downpipe which is sufficient for my purposes but I'm always excited to see new things that HRC releases for the 2gNT. I'll be curious to see the pics on how you squeezed the 3" pipe in there ... it was a pain just for my 2.5".

Anyway, I'm glad you're still making upgrades for us.

EDIT: Josh, if someone has a 3" downpipe I'd HOPE they wouldn't try bolting it to a stock cat. If you're replacing both at the same time then having a cat made to fit won't be an issue (easier than welding that 2 bolt flange at the funky angle). Now if someone already has an aftermarket cat I'd see it being an issue. But if you're springing for 3" downpipe I hope you can turn around and sell your old hiflow cat and get/modify one to match the HRC downpipe.

Personally I like the idea of putting that 3 bolt flange on there. That funny angle 2 bolt flange on the DP-cat connection always bothered me. I made a test pipe that was just off by hair on the angle and if just ended up being junk. Plus lower quality test pipes and cats have varying success rates getting that angle right. Straight flanges are so much better.

Hey, it's all good! I don't mind a little good-natured ribbing now and then, it becomes invaluable info if it is regarding likes / dislikes of our products.

Thura has the right idea, IMO: using anything less than a 3" cat or off-road pipe rather defeats the purpose of the 3" downpipe. When we introduced the Eliminator downpipe series way back in 1995 for DSM's, we offered an option for folks to adapt it to a stock cat, if only temporarily. It was not very popular...most folks just went all 3" right away.

The 3" 3-bolt flange (and gasket) we use is popular and easy to find, as it is borrowed from a very common application: V-8 headers! Of course, we can provide one too if you like when ordering the downpipe.

We will also offer 3" 420A DSM cat-cons and off-road pipes, as well as complete 3" cat-backs.

Do you need a 3" downpipe and exhaust? I would say any cars trying to make well over 300HP will benefit. Stock engines actually work very well with our standard downpipe, and if the clamp drives ya nutty, a quick weld takes care of business.

Hey Bill, one of your favorite star guy's here... If I could be a favorite that is... I wonderd if the 3" dp might work for the star kit? I heard the 20g has the same flange as the t3/04e that I have, but I'm not sure if it's the DP flange we have in common. Can you shed a little light on this for me???

There is one impediment beyond the difference in outlet flanges from the Garrett to the Mitsu Super turbo that we offer...the STAR manifold places the turbo off-center relative to the exhaust ports, while our design is an on-center arrangement. This means a difference of a few inches in turbo location.

All we need is a STAR equipped car in our shop to look it over though...any takers?

i hope this is mad eout of better quality steel then that "dp" from the kit is made out of. i had mine crank in like 3 spots and fall off then i was in kentuky, going to chicago.

But I may have some insight into your earlier failure...did you retain the two bolts that attach the downpipe to the front of the engine block bracket? If no, then the stresses at the downpipe flange weld can be excessive...this is the only scenario where we see the standard downpipe have issues.

from what i remember... he didn't have one.

a 3 inch downpipe mated to a 2.5/2.75 test pipe and catback isnt a bad idea. full 3 inch would be ideal for flow's sake yes, but the 3 inch dp over a 2.5 or 2.25 is OBVIOUS and very noticable spool time. i think a 3 bolt flange isnt a good idea just for user sake...you're almost forcing them to get your test pipe and catback then...know what i mean?

and yea...its not a good idea at ALL to weld the stock downpipe to the HRC downpipe...do you know hos much of a pain in the ass it is to get off like that? shit...you'd have to remove the whole damn downpipe even from the turbo just to get the pan off or something. and those 3 bolts on the mitsu turbos and 2.25 downpipe are all but fun if you dont know the trick

i personally made my downpipe, it's 3 inch all the way and mates perfect to the test pipe i have, 2 bolt flange. i dont know whats the problem :shrug...either it fits or it doesnt.

shit maybe i should have just replicated my downpipe and sold it

edit: booya....its a little different now because of a qtec cutout and thermal heat wrap, but here is my downpipe from the front

I appreciate your input, but the 3" 3-bolt has worked well for us on other applications. 3" 2-bolt flanges have excessive span between fasteners (prone to warp and leak) and can be rather bulky.

I want a 3 inch dp...im prove just going to a place in east hartford to make it becuase i have a little more space for my DP to bend becuase i have no ps pump or AC comp to get in the way

I was with Dougie2 on the board when he got your guys (HRC) prototype 3" downpipe that he picked up from Avenger a while ago? Will it look anything like that? It wasnt straight 3" coming from the top flange but gradually went to 3".

I have Armond's downpipe. Starts at 2.5" and gradually increases to 3" before the bend. I can post pics if you'd like.

Yes, that was our first prototype. It worked well, but this new model is a better concept overall, as any successive attempt had better be!
