74514, HRC's New Fuel Setup - Maybe New Info
Posted by siueclipse, Jul-28-04 06:11 PM
Well, apparently my buddy went to Nopi in St Louis and apparently talked to someone from HAHN and there was a HAHN car there.

They showed him the engine compartment for a brief second. Guess what was installed... An 8 injector setup. Complete bolt on kit from HRC.

My buddy was told that the kit will be available very soon and they were just waiting on some patent work to be completed and the kit would range anywhere from $500 to $700.

Again, this is supposidly a complete bolt on kit with no holes to drill.

The HRC rep apparently was going on and on about how well they have tweaked this system with outstanding results.

Well.. I trust my friend and what he says, however.. Who knows. Its all speculation till we see something new.

Its basically a pulse width converter of sorts..stock injector pulse width into the unit, and modified lower pulse width out. Its pretty simple and can be hidden very easily. I swear, I have no clue why people are keeping this stuip shit a big secret.

I dare you to come to the shootout and put in some 600+cc injectors and just run a "FPR". We will see how well it runs. You say i'm wrong, then prove it.

if my car was anywhere near put together I would go to the shoot-out. I guess it will have to wait for another time.

Besides you have seen it. You yourself have seen Len's car in person. I have no clue how big Len's injectors are but they are supporting 500ish+ horsepower.

It's proven that the Chill Factory fuel system doesn't need extra electronics to support big horsepower.

Why do we keep going over this?

Anyone with interest in this is welcome to contact me. I am completely uninterested in arguing the merits here. No offense to the 2GNT faithful who have frequented this forum for years, but events of the past year or so have put things in a completely different light for us regarding information on new ideas.

Best bet is to email me with your 2GNT handle and let me know a phone number and a good time to call you. All I ask is that you be sincere in your intention to upgrade your fuel system, as the calls we can process limits me to serious inquiries only at this time.

Fuel It!

i wouldnt doubt it really.
they probably got their hands on the 034 and made one of their own slightly different so they could patent it. if you think about it all they need to do is make a lower intake and it is a bolt on affair for the most part.

Yes...but is tuning an EIC really bolt on? Not IMO unless they've got a library of fuel maps. Maybe that's what is taking so long :9

I'd like to talk to Bill about this...but I wouldn't know what to say or ask, and would come off looking like an idiot...so I'll just sit here and spectualte until they go public with it. LOL :P

well thats kinda what i was thinking.....the 034 plus some of their own added features designed in and base maps for all the injectors they sell or maps based on specs. would really make the fuel system upgrade easier for most myself included.

If i was buyin i would stop down there and talk to bill maybe place an order but a few other things are comming up right now.

Patients is a virtue gentleman. Would you rather have a product released and untested. Then revised a dozen times in the first month it's out, or get a product tried, tested and ready to go.

Products coming out of HRC have to come out of the box excellent because the eyes are on them. Anything released will be scrutinized under a microscope. That's he problem with being the best company to turbo the 420A. Anything Bill does or thinks of doing will be front page news in a dozen forums on the internet.

The Neon iteration is super close to the 2GNT combo. With both cars, we have run 370-380 WHP with the new fuel arrangement. The new system debuted on our RS, then was transferred to the Neon.

No, it's not the drag Neon, that's the one we had the quad throttle body on, ran 9.20's @ 155 coupla years back. The car seen at St. Louis is a full street car, full exhaust and interior, 2650 lbs w/driver; ran 12.20's @ 123 on street tires @ 23 PSI boost.

I will ask that you all make an exception and pardon this ad pitch on this board, for what you see below is definitely advertising oriented, not what I would typically post here, but I feel it is appopriate to do this under the circumstances. This is the same exact info we will post to the site ASAP. For those of you who have questions, please call me or email me, as I don't want this to turn into a full-blown 'sales thread':

Breakthrough! The Revolutionary New PortFueler for Hahn RaceCraft Turbosystem Stages IV and V

Hahn RaceCraft is proud to bring you PortFueler! This new innovation will inject that extra power you crave into your Hahn Racecraft turbosystem. This revolutionary fuel alternative allows you to bolt on a complete set of boost enrichment injectors, yet have those injectors in the ideal position at each intake port. Using the PortFueler, you can achieve up to 400 HP from the Super 16G that came with your Hahn turbosystem. With a Super 20G, almost 500 HP is possible!

Bill Hahn Jr, the leading pioneer in the development of the 420A DOHC engine, has brought his 25 years of turbosystem experience to bear on this exciting new system. Using the same staged injection concept as PortFueler, Bill has won numerous National Championships, while setting innumerable records. He has now brought this high HP fueling capability to the average enthusiast. From design, to testing, to final calibration, Bill has sweated all of the details. The results are what you would expect!

Easy to install

A complete PortFueler system only takes several hours to install with simple hand tools. Wiring chores are minimal, with only six wires to attach. No machining or welding needed. Once installed, you will have up to 27 PSI boost capability. Just fire the car up, set idle fuel pressure, and drive…Bill has done the hard work for you, no further tuning is necessary*!

Easy to live with

With PortFueler, your stock computer still controls your stock injectors. As a result, PortFueler is unmatched in all those aspects that make a street car enjoyable…your car will start, idle, and cruise as smooth as stock, with stock emissions and fuel mileage, and NO ‘check engine’ lights. Your car loves it! But when you lay into the pedal and boost occurs, PortFueler takes care of the rest.

There’s no comparison…

If you’ve ever tried to make an FMU (variable rate of gain) regulator run with big injectors at high boost, you can forget about all those frustrating issues with PortFueler. PortFueler idles @ 50 PSI, not a low 20 PSI or less where fuel injectors just can’t spray well. And the maximum fuel pressure in a PortFueler system, even at 25 PSI boost, is 75 PSI, not the insane 100+ PSI you might see with an FMU in such a high boost application. This can seriously reduce stress on components, eliminating high-pressure related failures of injectors, lines, pumps, and even the stock ECM due to excessively high fuel pressure combined with big injectors and an FMU.

And as far as pinpoint calibration for every possible boost and RPM point, PortFueler blows the FMU concept away for high boost cars. PortFueler is calibrated at almost 1000 different points, where the ‘best’ FMUS can only be calibrated at 4 different points, with the remainder of the fuel curve left to vague ‘slopes’ caused by the overlapping methods of adjustment. PortFueler adds to your turbo car the fuel mapping capability of a complete programmable engine management system at a fraction of the cost! Why limit yourself to a device that is about as adjustable as a carburetor when you can go PortFueler instead?

Can be tuned for custom applications

Should you decide you would like to adjust the internal calibration of your PortFueler, a software interface program is also available. It is compatible with Win 95, 98, 2000, NT, ME and XP. Any desktop or laptop PC can talk to PortFueler.

Contains everything you need

Here’s what you get in a complete Stage IV or V upgrade package:

PortFueler injector mounting system
Four ACCEL high performance fuel injectors
PortFueler control module, pre-calibrated for your application
1:1 Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator
All needed lines, fittings, and hardware
Expert guidance on how to set up other aspects of your car for this new power level
Detailed installation instructions

Call today to enter the next level of high performance turbo tuning: PortFueler!

*: Our calibrations are based upon a stock head, cams, and valves, stock intake, HRC turbosystem, aftermarket exhaust. You may need to recalibrate PortFueler if your application varies from this configuration.

Under 1000. OMG. I really hope its not that much. I'm not tryin to be an ass, but 8-injector setup seems like the same thing, with a little more fabrication involved. You could technically do this with a spacer plate between upper an lower manifold with injectors mounted to it, bolt on, and easy. The tuning part seems to be what they take care of with base settings. Is there more to it, or am I missing something? Nonetheless still good work, long time comming.

Thanks for sharing details with us Bill.

There are some details missing though... like how do the injectors attach to the existing intake? My guess is a spacer between the upper and lower intakes? Am I right?

Personally I'd be very surprised if this unit is under $1000... maybe just under it but if you add all the parts included you have way over $500 for starters...

This is a good solution for some I am sure... but it still does not offer the precise control that a 4 injector setup can like a DFI or Megasquirt setup... sorry but there is no way to have a perfectly smooth transistion from non-boost into boost using 8 injectors with the stock 4 still controlled by the stock ecu...

Also, I don't see anything about intake air temp sensors in your post... without knowing the intake air temp you cannot ensure you do not go lean without making the mix slightly rich to compensate for different intake air temps...

But I'll stop digging into the technical facts right now... This is a good solution for most of the users out there...

One question though, does it have an input for a wideband o2 sensor?

Close. It's actually a spacer between the intake and the head.

Personally I'd be very surprised if this unit is under $1000... maybe just under it but if you add all the parts included you have way over $500 for starters...

We will be custom configuring each order depending upon what parts folks may already have, but an average price for 16G will be $950 for everything, less if someone has parts they can re-use in the system. Call for a quote is the best advice!

This is a good solution for some I am sure... but it still does not offer the precise control that a 4 injector setup can like a DFI or Megasquirt setup...

Undoubtedly, a full stand-alone can do much...but even the stand-alone will work best in an application like this with primary and secondary injectors. No matter which product you use there, making a single injector of 70 lbs/hr (the equivalent of PortFueler on a 20G) idle and cruise without any derision in quality, emissions or mileage from stock is unlikely on an engine of this displacement. Now, using the hardware of this product with Staged Injection on a DFI, now we're talkin...but we're also talking multiple thousands of dinero before it's all wrapped up.

sorry but there is no way to have a perfectly smooth transistion from non-boost into boost using 8 injectors with the stock 4 still controlled by the stock ecu

You might be surprised...phase-in of this system is nigh imperceptible in actual usage! We've addressed this area rather effectively in the testing phase.

Also, I don't see anything about intake air temp sensors in your post... without knowing the intake air temp you cannot ensure you do not go lean without making the mix slightly rich to compensate for different intake air temps...

Currently, the only climatic compensation is that of the OE control system. Yes, the fuel curves we have developed are a tad safe to compensate for this, but with adjustable fuel pressure, a 'quick-tune' is just a pop of the hood away. It has been my finding that climatic changes primarily affect a car's behavior in normal driving operation, as opposed to gross changes in top-end tuning...in other words, highly modded cars with other fuel approaches (yes, even full-programmable) are more likely to show behavioral oddities from weather change in the way they idle, cruise, and respond. The factory engineers spend an enormous amount of time making the stock fuel control strategies adapt well to broad weather changes. Trying to duplicate their results with no budget and an odd collection of hot rodder parts is impossible, but since we leave all that stock operation untouched with PortFueler, the car still satisifies in the bulk of its regular use, which is, of course, not under boost.

One question though, does it have an input for a wideband o2 sensor?

By input, what do you mean? Oh, and good questions, but the way. Almost FAQ-like!

EDIT: well since i made a useless post already i guess i'll edit it into a question even though you said to call :-(

I have the stage 2 turbo kit with fmic and je pistons w/ crower rods. Also, it is a s16g turbo. What size injectors would come in the kit and if I can get a more precise price I will probably be able to place the order within the next 2 weeks. (if it is indeed available now) Also I already have 42lb ford injectors that I was planning on using with a SFMU. Would I need to sell them and use what you supply or will they work without having to do any tuning?

Sorry... I figured I would make something out of this post since all it said was oops b/c i am dumb x(

Email me your phone number and we can review what you have vs. what you need. Chances are the injectors you describe will work just fine!

Can we buy just the "spacer"? Many have a somewhat similar setup, and just need a permanent way to mount the extra injectors, aside from drilling/bosses.

Sure. We will sell any seperate component of the system. The CNC billet plate also integrates the fuel rail into the assembly with billet brackets.

I can't believe no one has asked this yet but... Can I see pics of everything included. I am stage 2 fmic'ed right now with built motor and am looking for a solution. Its between this and the megasquirt now!

i doubt he will give you any pics right now. i dont think the patent work is completed.

Well if its ready for sale, then it should be ready for presentation as well. I'd rather hear from the man himself though, thanks anyway.

I can add this:

Fact is, we will be showing it 'in the flesh' on our website later this week, and 'in person' at the DSM Shootout.

As soon as I receive my kit, I will post a FAQ on the install if thats cool with Bill.

Thanks for the reply...
I actually realised after I wrote the post that the spacer between the intake and the head made a little more sense...

As far as the wideband input... I was refering to being able to hookup a wideband to the "HRC unit" and log / use the wideband o2 numbers to fine tune the setup... being able to compare the wideband output to the actuall config side by side would make tuning a snap...

Oh and as far as injectors go... I have a set of 4 75lb injectors idling on my Megasquirt... idle's rather nicelly actually.

And yes you are right... the crossover you would get when going from non-boost to boost is indeed very small...

One question... the adapter plate... are you machining them in house? Or out-sourcing them? If you don't have any CNC machines in house I would love to talk to you guys about getting a CNC machine with one of our CNC controls... www.centroidcnc.com

And I'm glad to hear the setup is already tuned slightly rich to compensate for climactic changes... ;)
