73514, Oil Pressure while accelerating/boost ... Posted by techboy, Jul-05-04 06:20 PM
I just drove my car home from the garage where I've doing all my work (about 20 min away) for the first time in 6 months. Yeah. Ok, the question ...
While driving I noticed that under acceleration my OP gauge would sometimes go up to like 90 - 100 PSI under like 7-8lbs of boost, which seems awfully high to me. I just did a search on Oil Pressure and got 22 hits, most of which were questions about OP at idle. My idle OP is about 18-20 and crusing it's around 60, which according to my search is correct. What do you guys see while accelerating under boost?
BTW - I'm posting in the turbo forum b/c I'm assuming this will be different for NA vs. FI vehicles.
EDIT: I'm using synthetic blend 5W-30 oil if that matters.

i use 5w30. if the car is moving at all i see 50psi of oil pressure. idle i s see about 25. the gauge never moves in relation to boost.

Mine does. I teed right off the sending unit on the back of the block where the turbo feed is teed off.

Same, mine is about 45 psi, with 10w30 syn...
Boost does not matter
Your unit my be messed up...lol
But really the sending unit might be jacked...mine goes up to about 75psi when its ASS cold and its warming up.....your oil psi is wayyyy to high

Hmmmm, this is hard to figure, it's such a simple thing. I have an autometer gauge and it just has a hard plastic line that runs from the sending unit to the gauge. I had the line off yesterday and it's clean, I'm not sure what it could be.

Your sender is probably shot. After a few months I would start seeing 90-100 psi bursts. Call autometer, get a new one, replace, and be good for another few months.

Well that doesn't exactly make me want to get another one from Autometer. I've only had it on the car about 3 days.

I agree with the comments about AutozoneAutometer

Well, I had one that lasted a year and another that lasted 3 weeks. I guess call them and see if they have any better designs out now and see if this is a problem.

Hey techboy I just installed mine about a week or 2 ago and it did the exact same thing. Then I was driving one day and the needle would bonce around and then it just quit working. I haven't had time to get under the car and see what it going on with it. The connection between the sending unit and the gauge to my instructions was just one wire. So the wire might have come disconnected or something. If you find a better sending unit that will still work with the autometer gauge PM me please I need to fix this POS too.

Clarify this sentence for me and I'll let you know what I find out. I'll be dropping the tranny on Friday of this week, so while I'm under there I will take the sending unit off and see what the heck is going on with it. I'll let you know what I find out.

It sounds like techboy has a mechanical gauge and QC has an electric gauge...which use different senders.

Ahhh! Right on, that's why what he said didn't make sense to me. And yes, I do have a mechanical gauge. My sending unit is leaking oil everytime I park. As I mentioned above I have my gauge teed right at the sending unit. I wondering if maybe there is air getting in there causing the screwy readings since it's leaking. Something to fix...

WRONG EVERYONE!
If you do not wait until your car is completely warm, your op will go over 80+ psi. All your other pressures are just fine, I guarantee if you ride it around for a bit, then your higher rpm pressure will dramatically drop.

Obviously your pressure will be higher but not 90-100 psi!

Well, I haven't had the luxury to drive my car too far yet since I just got it all back together - too many cinks to work out yet ... but I'll see what happens. Thanks for all the good info.

What oil weight are you using? I use 10w30 and my pressure were normal, but I had to put in some 20w50 once and my pressures were around 90-100psi u8ntil I changed back to 10w30.
I've also had 2 elec. Autometer oil psi. gauges and 3 senders. THEY ALWAYS FUCK UP! Now I have a mech. gauge. I just need to hook it up. I'm not fucking with that elec. POS again.

Yeah I have the Electric gauge too and it looks like mine just screwed up too. Does anyone know of any other sending units that will replace the Autometer one that is a hell of a lot better?

Yeah, Mechanical.

73715, FIgured out the problem .... oil pump I think Posted by techboy, Jul-10-04 06:54 AM
Ok, so *I think* I figured out why I was getting screwy OP readings on my guage. I think my Oil Pump was going bad the whole time ... b/c now the last 7 to 8 times I've started my car, I've had no, absolutely "0", Oil Pressure. Obviously now I can't drive it.
Here's what I've checked so far: I took the gauge off, checked for pinches, krimps, what-have-you = fine. I took the oil feed line off the turbo = no oil. I took the oil filter off, no oil in the filter = bone dry. I dropped the oil pan, replaced the oil pickup with a new one and checked the o-ring = still no oil. So, I can't think of anything else but the oil pump. Is there ANYTHING else at all it could be????
That part that sucks is I've only put maybe 20/30 miles on the car since my rebuild and putting the engine back in ... and now I'll have to pull it all apart, replace the oil pump, re-time it and all the other crap that goes along with it that would have been much easier when the engine was out. I hate my car right now .....:wtf
Sorry for the rant.

Oil is ok, I definatly wouldn't do fuel, but I've used and know lots of people that use mechanical oil psi gauges. If it leaks, it should just be a slight drip anyway. The line would have to burst in order for you to get sprayed and it rated at 200psi or something.
