"better" as in faster spool? capable of more boost? better adiabatic efficiency? what do you mean "better"? a turbos a turbo more or less if you dont have a goal in mind (fast spool, lots of air flow, etc)

edit: and a td06 is the exhasut housing....a s16g is the compressor housing...cant really compare the two but a s16g compressor (in my case) is a td05 exhaust housing...so a obvious diff is faster spool

good point. try this.. is a TD06 17c a better turbo than the TD05 16g, in terms of spool-up and max efficient HP, by comparison with a TD06 20g.

is a TD06 17c close enough to the TD06 20g that if i could get one for half the price of a 20g, that it would make it worth it?

It should be a good turbo to use. I don't know of any 2GNT using one with the HRC kit, so you'd be on your own on this one. The Super 16G you're using now has a 10 cm^2 TD05H exhaust housing with the Mitsu/GM spec T3 flange and internal wastegate. If you use another turbo, make sure it has the same turbine inlet flange, wastegate, and downpipe bolt pattern. The GM Typhoon/Syclone trucks used 17c turbos with a similar setup, but using 14 cm^2 turbine housings... which is really too big for your application IMO.

I say stick with the S16G.

Actually the TD05H or TD06H part refers to the Compressor housing itself... NOT the exhaust housing... ;)

The Mitsu turbo part numbers don't give any obvious info about the exhaust housing unless you ave the numbers off it...

And yes the 17C was generally a Starion turbo...
