Some guy is offering me a turbo off a domestic V6 setup... it's a Garrett T3. No information on the sizing yet (supposedly any size T3 will net 350hp max which is plenty for me, since I won't have enough money to rebuild my motor for four or five years), but it's coming off of a carbureted setup. No wastegate. No BOV. No water cooling lines. He called it a "closed loop" turbo and pretty much baffled me with all his lingo and LOLs and Ahahahas so I didn't know quite what he was saying.
What my question is basically, will the turbo work on a 420A, fuel-injected setup? I will get a wastegate and BOV, obviously, but will this T3 from this old school motor work with a modern one?
I searched, couldn't find much on the topic, and all this carbureted turbo motor nonsense is confusing.

hmmmmm well i dont know..... but it doesnt sound like that great of an idea. The turbo is extremely easy to get compared to other stuff.. especially the manifold. I say get a turbo that will definitely work.

dosent sound too bad. even though closed loop is in referance to the o2 sensor stuff. anyways. since turbo's dont always have coolant lines (my super25g dosent have them) and they deffantly dont come with bov's. you will just have to make a custom kit and have the manifold made to accept an external wastegate.

I wouldn't do it. Turbo technology has changed so much in the last few years. Definitely get something new and know what your getting. You don't want to be replacing a turbo in a year - trust me.

It's a brand new turbo, with receipts and all to show it was purchased within the last two months. I'll get some pics ASAP ...

Last time I heard someone talking about a "closed loop" turbo set up, they were referring to the fact that the air has to be recirculated. So that would be my best guess.

As for the turbo, it will be fine. You'll just have to go through the same troubles as anyone else setting up a custom kit... although it shouldn't be too difficult to find a manifold to bolt up to that turbo. The Star manifold will, and maybe that one guy that does manifolds on here (alain something or other) can hook you up as well.

As for how well that turbo is matched up to your motor, we don't have nearly enough info. T3 is actually referring to a whole family of turbo's, so it's hard to say what you can expect out of it. Worst case scenario, I would say it's a mild step up from a 14b.

EDIT: I just remembered, when he said closed loop, he was probably refering to an external wastegate that was routed back into the exhaust. I remember seeing a thread about that on a honda forum a while ago.

noobs playing with the egr. air being recirculated? u mean a bov that isn't vented to the atmosphere? That helps keeping ur turbo spooled while shifting...nothing special.

So the "closed loop" turbo only refers to the system in which the turbo is installed? Cool. I'm gonna try and find out more about the turbine...
