72091, ITS ALIVE! Posted by Corbin, Jun-03-04 03:00 PM
Here is my "Its Alive" post. I think its expected after you do an engine swap. Engine is in the car and running...again. It actually started up for the first time in the middle of May. 3 days into the break-in, I had some electrical problems (ECU, O2, plugs) that put the car down. It took me 3 full weeks to figure out the solution. Thats long enough that I had to buy a beater car...'91 Toyota Camry LE V6! I just got the Talon running right yesterday and I'm back on track. Over the winter, I built a complete engine and swapped it into the car over a weekend. Basic specs are as follows:
2.0l block bored 0.020 over 8.8:1 long rod bottom end kit balanced rotating assembly 3 angle valve job PT rockers PT lifters Crane 14 cams
It has been a learning experience and I am better for it. I just don't want to do it again for a few years. I documented every purchase down to the penny and took pictures of every step. If the engine survives, I will write a complete "how to". I'd like to thank Dave (Dualgen2), Jon (grn95HRCgs) Brenden (Munky), Carl (the guy with the Colt), Kirby, and Dino for the labor and advice. I'd still be knee deep in parts without them. And since I know this thread is worthless without pics:

I bought the engine that Dave blew up on the dyno

Dave had a little detonation

Block fresh from the machine shop

Head fresh from the machine shop

Nearly done

I had a little fun with the valve cover

Optional parts

Brenden and Carl yanking the engine

A little dirty, but thats me

Its in there

My new 0.7mm 316 SS heat sheilds

yeah man outstanding job on the heat shields, looks real clean! man i almost thought that air duct looking thing, was your DP, i'm hoping that's a DP heat shield. that's also cool on that lettering on the valve cover. did you stencil it on there or you used decals?

Good job man! If I didn't have Carlisle that weekend, I woulda been all over that! Valve cover looks goods! Now, where did you get that heat shield? I need one BADLY! So, now that you've got the built block, and the 8-injector setup, what're you gonna up the boost to?

I appreciate the responses. I've been waiting for a long time for this. Now I just need to get some miles on the engine.
Valve cover: I ground the letters off and stripped the VC down to bare metal. Then I hit it with a gloss black. I built the letters pixel by pixel (no wussy fonts for me). Then I had a graphics shop cut a vinyl decal. I used that as a mask for the silver paint. Peel off the mask and give the whole thing a clear coat. Bake at 400F for 30 minutes and voila!
Heat sheild: The company that I work at uses alot of stainless and titanium sheet. I snagged some scrap stainless and made the heat sheilds. Its has a protective plastic film on it. You can cut and bend it without messing up the finish. When you are done, peel off the film and you have a nice polished surface.
Compression: I let Howell talk me out of ordering custom 9.6:1 pistons. I took the easy road and will just run low compression like everyone else. I think I lost a little power with the 8.8:1 pistons, but nothing major.
Downpipe: Its an XtremeRS downpipe. I painted it, wrapped it in thermal tape, and put aluminum ducting around it for good measure.
Boost: The auto tranny may be my next weak link. I'll keep the boost reasonable until I swap in a built AT or MT. Then I'll have a little more fun.
