71886, venting: trash ass turbo kit Posted by skeletal29, May-30-04 07:24 PM
Ok well a friend of mine bought a "star" performance f***** turbo kit for like 2700 or something of that nature.
1)First of all the instuctions has pictures. these pictures are not even in color 2)This is my first time installing a turbo kit on a car I thought everything would be ready to bolt the fuck on well guess what i had to move the freaking compressor housing around and shit(not a big deal but wasted my time to figure it out) 3)the god dam down pipe was fucking flanged the whole way and the o2 sensor can not go in because there is no space at ALL because of the oil pan being right there 4)they make the oil dump tube a steel pipe so fucking long and pre bent in a bad angle now its kind of a bitch to clear the rubber pipe against the down pipe. 5)the little map by pass crap they tell u to get power from the fucking ignition switch is it just me or is that fucking stupid as hell the bay is already so tight . i am trying to figure out which wire powers the ecu and tap that... i am hoping that will work any input would be help ful
right now i have left to do is get the dp cut so they can move the bung 180 deg. and i have to make the hole in the oil pan so i can put the fitting on and put the oil pressure switch thing on and wire that map by pass crap.
what did u guys think of the turbo kit? its a star stage 2. my friend with another nt 2ng gen wants to get a kit as well is hahn better?i was not happy with this kit....the installtion was a pain but hopefully the performance gain will be good.

i just installed the star stage two on my car..the install was pretty straight forward after i cut my exhuast into pieces to get it off cause the downpipe and cat were like welded together so i need a new exhuast...
your right the directions do suck and the pictures are even worse. Most of the instructions just stay "install <insert part here>"
for the oil pan i actually switched it around and put the pipe running off the turbo and the brass fitting into the oil pan..but make sure you mount it over far enough so the power steering pump doesnt get in the way of putting the hose on if you do it that way.
the down pipe fit in fine with the o2 sensor. and i didnt get a map bypass mod at all with my kid =/

Just calm down, take a deep breath if your over 21 have a beer.
Where did he buy his kit from? Maybe they can swap the DP?
No kit is "bolt up".
Any serious questions just ask, like you said the instructions suck, but you figured it out. What does that say? Its not THAT hard. I myself have to pry against the DP to have enough room to screw in the o2 sensor. Its anoying but eh, you get used to it.

damn man, take a chill pill...relax!
i'm sure everybody has problems with the Star kit. they are known for installation problems if you are a novice. However the HRC instructions can be used as a guidline for your Star install.
oil pressure switch socket can be found at places such as Autozone and advance. They are called.....Oil pressure switch sockets :P. Shoudl cost around 5$ or so. If not I believe 1 1/16 is the closest, if not they are the same thing.
Oil drain: not sure what Star kits has, but what ecver you do, use gaskets and RTV if you must.

Go to Autozone and buy a universal Oil Sending Unit socket. 8 bucks or so.

The star kit states take it to a installed if i recall. Oh well to late for that. The oil return is very simple, cut the tube to the correct length and bolt it to the turbo. Mine is just a tiny bit longer after the pipe makes its bend. Next i recommend dropping the oil pan and install the flange how the instruction say to. The other option is to mark your oil drain location on the oil pan and remove it. Now take it to a welder and have him weld in a bung to accept your hose fitting....this is really the best way. I did it like the instructions and tack welded the plate on the inside so i could remove the flange if i needed to regasket it. Use a rubber hose to go pipe to flange.
Next time take some time to know what you are geting into so you dont make an A$$ of yourself. There is no turbo kit that is a simple install, even the hahn takes time and patience. I have a 96 with the star on it now and no mods were needed for the map so i cant help ya there.

Rotating a compressor housing isn't a problem. My kit bolted up pretty easily. Some things looked like they were gonna be a bitch, but once things were said and done, I can honestly look back and say that the install was actually pretty easy. So just drink some beers, figure out your oil return problem, and buy a missing link. You will be all set.

for the star I thought yu were supposed to rotate the compressor housing anyway?

You are. it's called "Clocking the turbo" and i believe it is covered in the instructions.
The downpipes are always a pain. I've installed 4 or 5 STAR kits throughout my days, and the funny thing - half the time the downpipe fits fine, half the time the bung is too close to the AC compressor. The downpipes are always the same - must be some subtle differences in the cars.
Go slow, take your time, and ask questions here. If you expected it to just "drop in" and be that easy, you were mistaken. No turbo kit is perfect.

Hahha I was gonna say the same thing but I erased it. Trust us, installing the kit is the least of your problems :)

Hehe this is funny. Granted, the instructions sucked ass but I didn't really have a problem installing my star kit. The only thing I had to do was to take the DP to a welder and have him cut the bung off and weld it on the otherside so I could get the o2 sensor to go in.
