71346, Is no intercooler for now ok??? Posted by DJ420a, May-21-04 11:54 AM
I am about to install a kit I put together, but I dont have an intercooler yet. I plan on getting one within the next month, I just cant afford that right now. I really want to put it in. Im not going to run real high boost anyways. Im doing the Hi compression/ low boost approach. I also am only going to run on stock injectors for now as well. I was told if I stay around 7PSI, I should be fine, just dont crank the boost up. Whatchu guys think? Here's what up under the hood, for now. Thanx guys

P.S. the motor was rebuilt with the Howell kit about 3k ago.
Thanx again

Awesome, another hi comp guy. I was running 5 psi non-intercooler for 8 months with stock compression.
Are you getting any timing advance? How much timing are you gonna pull?
I'm gonna do 10 psi wiith 10:5 comp (or what ever 10 ration howell has).

Edit: thats a HUGE turbo you seem to have. 60 trim eh

it seems to me that being high compression you arent going to want to boost over 5 psi because your EGTs will be hotter than most stock compression peoples. I would say go to a junk yard or on ebay and buy a cheap 1G sidemount or something along those lines. It will do for now! :thumbsup (wow, I never post in this forum anymore lol)

I feel you. Maybe I will just be patient and wait another couple of weeks and just get the intercooler. Then install everything, cuz if I really thought about it, I would be making piping twice. Hey thanx for the comments and opinions man, you guys help alot!!!!

It is a really big turbo!! I actually questioned if it would fit. This is coming from a guy thats never messed with forced induction. I have a mechanic thats building my kit for me. This mechanic is the one of the mechanics that turbocharged Christian Rado's drag Celica. There in Lancaster, PA. Its a long drive, but its worth it. Anyways, he said it would fit and I would have know prob runnin 7-10 PSI, nonintercooled. We will see!!

Well I have the option now to change the timing on my cams and ignition, but I dont know what I will do yet. I just want to get the turbo running right first, then I will play with timing. The kit Howell sells, is infact 10.5 to 1. Thats the kit I bought. So Im guessn everything ran alright for, without the turbo?

Seems like a pretty ambitious setup.
Unless you have extensive experience with another 420A turbo system, I'm strongly recommending against using stock fuel injectors. I've probably said this a thousand times - stock fuel injectors are good for normally aspirated. Period. Unless you are running an 8 injector setup, the stock injectors are very dangerous with a boosted application.
On top of that, you want to get away with not using an intercooler, high compression, and you are starting off with a turbo with an A/R on the cold side of .63? At the very least, get some 415-440 cc/min injectors and a S-FMU or something.

Holy Crap. Nonintercooled at 7-10 is not cool imo :thumbsdown
