71269, EGT insallation question
Posted by QC DSM ESiT, May-20-04 08:23 AM
Okay well I did some searching and I wasn't able to come up with much so I am wondering on where I drill the hole at for the probe on the EGT. Someone said in the #4 exhaust port. Is this right? If so does anyone have pictures? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

#4 runner is the recommended spot for the EGT probe. On the HRC kit #4 has little room for the EGT probe because of the compressor outlet. I did one last weekend on a HRC kit with a Team Rip probe and it barely fits under the compressor outlet. It is much easier on a Star kit to tap the #4 runner. For what its worth... my HRC mani is tapped on runner #3. Really easy to tap for the probe just use a 21/64 drill bit and a 1/8 NPT tap.

What if you drilled it at an angle in the #4. That wouldn't really affect it would it? Is there really a big difference between 3 and 4? I rather do #3 only because it is easier to drill into but if it makes a big difference I guess I could drill it angled or maybe even under.

Mine is drilled into the number four at a slight angle and it fits nicely under the HRC outlet. Also the Autometer probe has a nice 90degree bend in it so it doesnt stick up as far. I will try and post some pics of it laters.

Mine is in the #4, and is on the bottom of the manifold. Hidden nicely, and I didn't have to cut a hole in my heat shield.

Mine is right in the center before the turbo. I have pics in a previous post.

All the info i found said to install it at cyl #1.....for some reason it is stated that cylinder runs the hottest....any ideas?

Yeah I noticed that on the Autometer probe I have. I'm sure I will figure something out. I will post pics. when done. Thanks guys

the particular cylinder shouldn't matter.. unless there is something wrong with your motor imo.

i disagree. on most race setups where there is an egt probe per cylinder its commonly found that the injector at the end of the flow would see the smallest amount of pressure b/c the other injectors in front would be drawing that pressure before it reaches this one. while it may not be a huge difference in temp its still good to err on the side of safety. with an ecu such as ours timing shouldnt play to much of a role per cylinder b/c of waste spark and the fact our ecu doesnt advance/retard per cylinder like some of our dsm bro's have.

jeremy, it should be in the hottest cyl, some run hotter then others
in a honda its CYL3 so we run it there

i understand it should be in the hottest cylinder. but i'd figure with a well designed water cooled motor, they should all run pretty close to eachother.
I know with air cooled motors, whatever cylinder/s in the middle run hotter and therefore you have to jet the carbs, definatlly (pertains mostly to bikes).

must just be due to slightly differences in the intake tract i'm guessing?
although the #4 on the 420a may get slightly less fuel from slightly less preasure.. i thought that same cylinder got slightly less air..? not enough to balance out?
