71181, Exhaust Cutout Posted by TapRooT, May-18-04 07:29 PM
I was wandering if anyone on here uses an exhaust cutout? I was really thinking of doing it but wanted to see if anyone else has it and what they thought about it. I think it would be really nice to run downpipe anytime you want like at the track or on the street :) but i was interested in this cutout its an electronic one by QTEC http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/ Does anyone have it? Or know anyone that has used it and what do they think about the cutout? http://208.254.222.235/QTEC/WRXVideo.wmv

Last time I was at the track there was a guy with an evo running that. It was really cool. I might have to get one whenever I get my adfx downpipe.

Yah I'm really interested in doing the cutout. I was thinking I was going to get a 3" catback then someone showed me that. So what I'll prolly end up doing is getting the cutout and just running downpipe at the track and such.

yea ive had this idea for a cutout for a long time, dino posted a link too.
i was going to have the cutout on the external wastegate though, so to switch from dumping the wastegate exhaust into the downpipe farther down, or out the side with the cutout
good to see someone else wants to do it :) badass imo :thumbsup _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

Yah, I'll prolly be doing it when im building the motor. The eclipse will be down prolly till mid next month :( while I'm doing internals and putting a built head on. But I'm going to do the cutout also. Ill try to post up some vids of how it sounded before and after :)

this one is cheaper than the qtec

Also, dont expect your car to sound like that wrx... they have a very unique exhaust note that... you will not get with an eclipse... its more like a dying motorboat... or a semi if you're turbocharged

This is by far and away one of the best supporting mods i have for my t3/t4. I decided to get away from the fart pipe lawnmower sound and go w/ somewhat of a sleeper setup. I have a 2.5" testpipe with the 2.5" QTP cutout welded in place. From the "cat" back its a stock gst exhaust. With the cutout closed on my star setup i don't see full boost on that little old exhaust until around 4700 range(full boost being 19-20 psi). With the cutout open i get full boost by 4K, and it hits like a ton of bricks. We had a friend dyno his evo before and after the cutout, it gained 28whp with the cutout open. Its the real deal. I swear by this thing.
Pros - at less than 200 bucks its a great value for the hp gain - very good for sleeper setups - increase spool time and mad power
Cons - the qtp motor has been known to fail after heavy usage. I've had mine 2 years and had to have the motor replaced already. I open mine almost daily :) The motor is out of pop machines so it isn't the most sturdy unit but does the job ok. To have qtp fix the motor it runs 30 bucks, so not to bad. - super loud(not really a con but should be noted) - the added flow will add boost. For instance with my cutout closed i see 15-16 psi. With it open I see 19-20 psi, whatever i have it set for. You should make sure you tune your fuel to account for the added boost. I'm not worried w/ my 8 inj setup but i don't want some nub blowing their shit up on my account.
I HIGHLY recommend the mod. You will really feel it on the butt dyno as soon as you put it in. Money well spent.

there is a groupbuy that is going on tuners for a cutout, that has room on the list for more.if interested

we put cut outs on my buddies vette and and he shaved 2/10ths off of his quarter from that alone.

This may be old but is the group buy still going on? I couldn't find it on dsmtuners? Can you send me a link if you don't mind thx!

Just get a straight pipe if you don't live in cali, i got mine half on, since it was for a 1g and the downpipe is at an angle i have to wait untill my buddy gets back from england so we can weld it up but my car sounds like a v8 shits rough

Yea but that doesn't come with the Y cutout does it? I think it's just the motorized butterfly plate and wiring.

hi. if i got this where would be the best place to put this at? i assume before the cat.. should it be after the first stock o2 sensor or what? also would it effect the 1st or 2nd o2 sensor? thanks

we talked about it last month, but didn't go much into it. The problem that I and some others see with a cutout is, it'll divert the exhaust flow away from the downstream 02 sensor. The downstream is needed because it does help the upstream to make minor fuel adjustments. If the downstream aint seeing exhaust flow, it's gonna tell the ecu to dump more fuel, because of of the "phantom" lean mixture.

79186, RE: Exhaust Cutout Posted by Ark, Nov-11-04 08:50 AM
I was under the impression that the downstream o2 sensor had no say in fuel trims and/or running conditions. It's there to monitor cat efficiency and that's it.

The downstream O2 has absolutely no say in fuel trims. It monitors the cat. That is all.
However, if you take it out and leave it hanging in the air and the ECU flags it as bad, a bad o2 is a bad o2 is a bad o2, be it front or rear, so yeah, its gonna run like shit, probably open loop, dump lots of fuel, and screw up the timing curve.

So, would the resistor mod on the downstream o2 get around this? Does the resistor mimic a good cat condition or a non-existant o2 sensor? I wonder if my rear is bad since i have shit gas mileage but have recently replaced my upstream. hmmm gears turning in head now.

Cat conditions within 'spec'.

I'm offering a 3" cutout on my downpipes as an option. It's a full 3" dp to a 3" dump. The post cat o2 will still get a signal so that's no worry. You can use this think manually, as in remove the plate on the dump to open it, or you can bolt an electronic valve like the ones you guys are talking about directly to it. You could have a full 3" exhaust and a GST catback, just open the dump when it's time to rock. ;)

79308, RE: Exhaust Cutout Posted by micyek, Nov-15-04 02:49 AM
I think it would be pimp to have it set up so it just opens at full boost. With a pressure switch. If you didn't want it opening up every time you hit full boost, just through an arming switch in the circut to. That way the downstream O2 sensor wouldn't come into play because your ECU should be in open loop mode anyway.
MMM...on second thought the main purpose of this set up is to decrease spool time...so the boost switch idea would be that great. Just a simple micro switch on the TB (like N2O guys use) would be more ideal...again using an arming switch. I wish I had more time and money then knew what to do with. LMAO

79309, RE: Exhaust Cutout Posted by 95GSEclipse, Nov-15-04 03:38 AM
they kinda have ones like that but it opens with boost....as in theres no electric motor....you run a line from your mani to the unit and boost pushes the door open.
