71033, DSM injector install gone bad?? help! Posted by Greg, May-16-04 01:02 PM
well I now have the 450 DSMer's in running 12 ohms on each unit. once the install was done the car drove perfect for the first maybe 15 minutes. Now it will studder all over the rpm band...So I figured it was my o2 sensor...I then replaced with new one and same thing. What is the deal here?? anyone?

Try PM'ing forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=user_profiles&u_id=102466. He was the first, I think, to get them to work.
After reading forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=26&topic_id=148&mesg_id=148&page= in the Things We've Seen Before forum it looks that he did it a different way then you did.
Originally posted by MrSlick Hi all, Just thought I'd share with you my recent experience with installing DSM 450CC injectors in my RS... OK, I'll cut right to the details...
Injectors - 450CC DSM injectors from a 1G turbo. O-Rings - Standard 2GNT injector O-Rings (Top and bottom). Fuel Pressure - Way low... :thumbsup Resistor pack - custom resistor pack, using 2 x 20 Ohhm 50W resistors in paralell for each injector. Engine - RS 420A, with a custom turbo kit, running at 10 PSI.
Hows the car running? Absolutelly great... its so much happier than with the stock injectors... If anyone else wants to hear any more details let me know... I'll post some more later.... Lee.

Hmmm I'm running 10 ohm 10 watt resistors on each injector.

Thats prob it right there..a 10 watt resistor may not be enough to run those injectors..may have fried some resistors..hopefully not the ECU injector drivers.

why don't you just stay away of Peak and Hold injectors ? They are made for our cars, either electrically or in the way they operate
I know that they are cheap to buy used but it's not worth it to load a driver with a static load like you do It will operate if done properly but in no way you could say that it will work great
and don't even think of loading them with wirewound resistor , even if you get the right DC resistance, under the pulses of the injectors the impedance will be far from beeing right the higher the frequency , hence the higher the rpm, the further you will be from the right impedance impedance and resistance and 2 separate things btw

yea dsm 450s are peak n hold, they are going to need a resistor box or to get some resistors and wire them inline.. i know that for honda boys who use them or peak n hold have to run a box from a obd1 honda lude or civic i think I bought one becuase i was told my 550s i was getting would be peak n hold, turns out they were saturated and i didnt need to use it not sure if it will work for you dsm boys, not sure why not.. but who knows
hope that helps

a Honda resistor pack is a better solution already for Greg

So how does the honda resistor box differ from some 10 ohm 10 watt resistors??

71067, RE: DSM injector install gone bad?? help! Posted by Greg, May-16-04 08:47 PM
Or if I did fry my resistors with to high of wattage what resistors should I try next?

One more thing. I do have a honda resistor box. It has 4 red with black strip wires and 1 yellow with black stripe wire...how do I hook it up if I should use it. Thanks!

71071, RE: DSM injector install gone bad?? help! Posted by evan2, May-16-04 10:52 PM
wire each of the 4 wires that goes to the injector cables u cut... and then wire all other 4 wires off the harness u just wired into the 1 color wire of the injector http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=517274 That link will give you a heads up on what you need to do
the reason we use the box is because its cheap and keep them in a nice metal box instead of having 4 seperate resistors inline with the injectors
you can do it either way, most of the boxes cost 20 bucks. I have one if anyone needs it. well let it go for 20shipped or 15 picked up im in north west florida

Because they didn't use wirewound type resistor but a carborundum (Spelling ??) type resistor which impedance doesn't vary in function of the RPM of the engine also you notice that there's 1 out and 4 out the 1 wire out it's because they are using only 1 resistor for the 4 injectors , and the metal box act as a heatsink to cool the resistor

Well I removed the injector harness and here it is. I still do not understand how you hook up the honda resistor box. If anyone has a diagram that would help me alot. I installed 10 ohm 10 watt resistors from radio shack. This is really frustrating.

OK since imagestation is gay I'll exsplain. I have the resistors on the smaller wires of each injector. I do not have it on the Green with orange stripe. The Green wire with orange stripe is the thicker of the 2 wires to each injector. do I have the resistors on the wrong wire??

did you install the injectors on the positive wire or the ECU (negative) wire? It does make a big difference.

ECU negative wire is where the resistors are.

You just screwwed up big time man.....you may have damaged the ECU at worst but i doubt it. The resistor have to go on the positive wire. If you look at ohms law you would see why. take them off and measure the resistors with an ohms meter to make sure they are not damaged while you have them out and re-install them onto the positive wire.
With the resistor on the neg wire the injector is not getting hardly any voltage to operate...if the ECU drivers tried to compensate they could be damaged if the ecu tried to push them to hard but i dont that would happen because the current flowing through them does not change. The resistor size is fine however i would get some sort of heat sink to glue onto them. The DSM turbo resistors are 7ohms and would work fine as well. 7ohm or 10ohm will result in about the same current flowing over the drivers. plus they are a little nicer and have a nic eplug so they can be removed and they have a heat sink already installed. I got mine from a junk yard for 5.00.

about the honda resistor box if you have a multi-meter, and you should if you want to play with car wirring check the following
5 wires in total 1 large and 4 of the same color, check the continuity between any of the 4 wires of the same color and they should all read with a close to 0 ohms continuity between the last wire and the 4 others you should read the same resistance
the large wire is the 12V the 4 other wires are the positive that go to each injectors
now check you wirring harness you will find out that 4 wires go to the same common wire that's the main 12v in splice the harness there the 12v goes to large wire of the honda box and the each of the 4 other wires go to one injector on the positive side
remove your old resistors and throw them in the garbage and soldered back your wiring harness

Sorry buddy but your wrong. The resistors go on the ECU side of the injectors, which is the ground side. I know because I ran my car for the last year that way until I switched over to the Megasquirt...
His proble is probably because 10 Watts is not enough heat disipation for the injectors... I used 2 x 20 Ohm 50 Watt resistors in paralell for each injector. That gives me 10 Ohms and 100 Watts per injector... and it works perfectly.
Start by checking the resistors and see if they are still good. Next check all your connections. After that check teh resistance of each injkector to make sure they havent burnt up. After that check each injector to see if theyre even working... simply pull off the injector connector for each injector while its idling and see if there is a change int he way it idles...

First of all I could not find anything bigger than a 10ohm 10 watt resistor at radio shack and why didn't you just use 4 10 ohm 50 watt resistors on each injector ground? I'm a bit confused by you 2 x 20 ohm 50 watt setup and how ya did it. Please bear with me I wanna get this right. Where can I find 10ohm 50watt resistors? Thanks
